Lol completely disagree with you Vinnie.

I know a heap of people who detest Essendon more then any the Hird vs Buckley rivalry of yesteryear also fed into it.

Most I know couldn't care less about Carlton been irrelevant for 24 years...
But on the Pies board we have had a thread specifically for Carlton for years now…..

Go figure.

Not really convinced Freo are WCE's biggest rival, other than being in the same state.

Seems more cyclical for us. During the Sheedy era it was Essendon, then in the 00s it was Sydney.

I think clubs really need to play games that actually mean something, or have fierce clashes, to be considered a rivalry.

That hasn't happened between WCE and Freo for 20-odd years. Build up and games between the 2 are very tame these days and the rivalry appears mostly media-driven than reality.

Trust me, you'll be hearing about how Maynard was blocked and some other made up unfair advantages you had because they ****ed up a 5 goal lead in a home grand final.
You still hurting?
Still raw?

Yup started by older generation posters and it has mixed views of people who they actually hate more sprinkled through it.

As I said imo it relates back to who you went to school with and friends circles, what team was relevant in those years and or arguments over said team.

I had 7 of my close mates who were all mad bombers, thought Hird was messiah and hated Collingwood. The dislike I have for that club can not be overstated.
Carlton I got it in the 90s where they were dirty team Mil Hanna and co but since they were largely irrelevant through my high school years. Bombers 00s team vs under dog pies was where it was at.

Outside of SA and WA most rivalries are just manufactured these days none of the players dislike Carlton they only talk about how the fans see it as a rivalry just another game to them holds no extra weight.
This mantra started under Mick Malthouse with his blockbuster fatigue theory.

I think it's become more and more based on repeated finals series contests between two clubs. You've just got to look at Geelong vs Hawthorn which has emerged over the last 10-15 years for evidence of that. This never existed in the 80's/90's/early 00's, even after the classic 89 GF.

For Richmond I'm not sure we have any really vitriolic rivalries anymore. Traditionally it was the Pies based on geographical proximity and the clashing of relatively similar working class roots, and then the Blues based on repeated finals clashes through the 60's/70's/early-80's was pure unadulterated hatred. But we (Rich/Coll or Rich/Car) really haven't been any good at the same time for a sustained period over the last 40 years to frank those old school rivalries. Round 1 seems to be just the last vestige of that duel.

If anything over the last 6 or 7 years we've built a bit of a rivalry with the Cats, probably due to the numerous finals match ups as well as a correlating success period. And you've just got to have a read of any thread involving Tiges vs Cats supporters to see a whole bunch of posters totally losing their minds with each other to get a feeling that there might be something with a little more substance involved in it.

Definitely not at the Hatfield vs McCoy level, but attending games like the Stewart/Prestia one a couple of years back revealed a fair bit of genuine uncontrived animosity between the supporters of both clubs, and even the players. We might even see both Richmond and Geelong sharing the lower portions of the ladder together over these next few years, rebuilding in parallel, which might even further galvanise the feud?

The last genuine rivalry involving actual hatred between playing groups and fans alike, was Essendon - Hawthorn, maybe 10-15 years ago.

It seems to have settled down now. As others have said, the players are generally pretty friendly to each other after the siren has gone these days.
