Remember for the next two drafts GC17 and GWS get what 9 first round picks and ???? 2nd round picks so existing clubs top picks are dilluted a fair bit.

The Goldcoast get picks 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 in the first then picks 26, 43.

Those that finish bottom four have considerable draft advantages compared to those that have finished top eight (more than in a normal draft), lucky we are not bottoming out right now and managed to get three solid draft years in before the expansion.

Player for player swaps will be more common but I wouldn't hesitate giving up our 1st and 2nd rounders plus players to sign quality youngsters such as Yarran, Rich, Bennell, Matera or Garlett.

Garlett and Bennell havn't proven anything at AFL and would still attract a premium, neither would realistically represent value.

Matera we could get for a direct swap for our first round pick. But as other have stated we have other, less expensive options exist, especially if we choose to trade into the draft.

We are in the perfect position to trade into this draft and pickup more kids. I feel going after an established young player still contains a level of compromise in terms real value, im also not convinced the returns on someone like Yarran who we have quesitonable need for, as well as the the return on a Garlett who would struggle to do much in our side.

Yarran and Rich would most likely cost too much but Garltett is still a rookie and Bennell was one pick before ASh Smith.;)

Melbourne have absolutly no need for Ash Smith and would only do a trade involving Ash Smith if Bennell was going to walk.

Just out of interest, around which pick would Matera be taken in this draft if it werent for the GC?

Thats the funny thing. It's hard to test.

Done nothing at AFL level naturally to prove his valye and he can't be tested against the 2010 draft group in the champs. A top 20 pick no doubts, but im not sure he would end up a top ten pick.

We should have a look at nathan foley, he would be perfect to take the Priddis role.

The thing is, no one can do the Priddis role as well as Priddis, as long as he doesn't kick he's pretty valuable. I doubt Foley would be equally adept as Priddis at the stoppages. Foley is Priddis' age or thereabouts anyway so it wouldn't be a long-term fix.

Exactly. There are actually very few players in the AFL who are as good as Priddis at getting first hands on the ball/getting the contested ball/getting his hands dirty on the bottom of the pack/feeding the ball out via handball. TBH he is Elite in those aspects. He is limited as he doesn't impact games with disposals/run and carry etc. but that's not his role.

I hate the Priddis bashing, if we didn't have him we wouldn't be breaking even in clearances at stoppages at all this year. Like other people have said you wouldnt appreciate the value of Priddis feeding out the ball unless he had quality players around him. It's a shame he only played with Judd Cousins Kerr Cox in 2007 only.

Lets see, who do we really need.

A Key forward- Yes
A Midfielder- Yes

From that could trade for a mid maybe get Bernie Vince, Daniel Wells, Daniel Rich, Shaun Higgins,

From a forward player- Chris Yarran, Justin Westoff, Scott Gumbleton, Micheal Hurley, Matt Stokes,

Nathan and Andrew Krakor would be good for us aswell.

Lets wait for Priddis to miss a few games before we make that call. Gets the ball drop plenty and gets clearences but im not sure how we can measure him on clearences alone. Their are less consistent but more effective clearence players in the AFL.

Being a one trick pony in modern AFL is a death sentence.

Huh?

What do you guys think of this approach? Are we really ready to trade in some more experienced players at the expense of a good kid in the draft?

Interesting idea. Logic tells you that a number of clubs will be wanting to trade estbalished players to GC17 to get their hands on some good draft picks. At the same time, GC17 will be desperate for established players to make its team remotely competitive. GC17 has more draft picks than you can shake a stick at, and certainly more than it can effectively develop.

So, if what Woosha says is true, we would be trading our draft picks - let's say pick number 12 - in competition with GC's raft of good picks under 15 (even if they keep 1, 2 and 3). If I was Collingwood or Hawthorn looking to trade a half-decent player, I know who I'd trade him to - GC.

I think we should take the opposite approach to Woosha. We should be looking to trade a couple of veterans (Cox and Kerr spring to mind) for a good package of draft picks from the GC. Then we might be really ready to contend in 4 years, rather than having ageing verterans clogging the list.
