Eagles/Dogs game: most critical of the last few weeks

If the dogs had just taken to trying to push nic over as the ball got bounced instead of going for the ruck, would you have that same opinion.
**** me, you're an idiot

Ruck Contest
"The player whose sole objective is to contest the ruck shall be permitted to do so".

Law 15.4.5 (f) A Field Umpire shall award a free kick against a player who makes prohibited contact with an opposition player by unduly pushing, bumping, holding or blocking whilst contesting a bounce, throw up or boundary throw in.

Free Kick -

  • Straight arm block preventing opponent contesting the ball
  • Early leap making contact with opponent, then lands on ground and hits the football
  • Crosses the centre circle line going past the flight of the football then makes contact with opponent
  • Makes contact with opponent whilst not watching the football
  • Obvious push, bump, block or hold
  • Crosses the centre circle line before ball is bounced or thrown up
  • Straight leg or foot - block

The key word there is "unduly".
I don't think that fits this circumstance.

The thing is that's the type of physicality you see in most ruck contests, the Bont just wasn't ready for it and lost his footing. Maybe play someone who has a bit more meat on the frame against naitanui.

If it was done by shoulder or bumping all good. but he planted his elbow and hand into the chest and pushed. If the collision didnt happen and he went to ground he would have been pinged.

Yeah no. If Bontempelli offered any resistance at all it wouldn't have happened, that happens in 90% of ruck contests. He's not a ruckman and now you know why.

If you want to highlight "push" watch the clip closely. Bontempelli pushes with his left arm as well, so neutral you'd have to say. In fact as Nic moves toward him he pushes first. Just wasn't strong enough to deal with the push back. So on your reading, should have been a free kick to Nic.

And if the umpires enforced the ruck rules closely Nic would get alot more free kicks as oposition ruck frequently infringe the 2nd and 3rd dot points above to try and take his run and leap from him at centre bounces.

You're right. I'm sure if we look at the few ruck contests nic lost, he was pushed at some point but didn't receive a free, this is a non issue. Doggies1972 use a proper ruckman next time, or don't bother sending your piddly 3rd man up and there might not be a broken nose to deal with.

Push ......are you serious

Your ruckman blocked Nic Nat all day and rarely went at the ball .....if you enforced that rule he would have given away 15 frees ......

Classic Bulldogs, big game away from the dome and they go to water
Classic "insert team with 60 games average each player" that they go to water late in the game. Actually thought we did well to keep up with you for as long as we did considering we were getting smashed in the middle. Good to see you're gracious in defeat though.

Enjoyed watching your boys play today. They're electric rebounding from D50 and for three quarters (maybe 2.5) it was game on

We got hold of you in the last but it was the most competitive 77 point game I've seen

Like the first bounce of the game where NN got a free for a less blatant push??

Yep, hard to believe how quickly it's changed. Bev only came in mid November, so what he has done in 3 months plus during the season is a fair effort. Another couple of preseasons and i reckon we'll give it a fair shake.

I have to agree with this.

We saw in that contest (and on many occasions this year) the difference between a ruckman and a tall guy contesting the ruck. But at least that is better than what we have also seen on many occasions this year - a short guy contesting the ruck.

Because in previous years Priddis used to just throw it on the boot and turn it over constantly. This year however he is playing to his strengths far more by handballing to better ball users and kicking only if forced to. Whether this has to do with the improvement of the other mids or coaches directives I don't know.

That is incorrect.

Yes he does handball more but he still kicks when he has time and space. What he doesn't do so much is blindly throw it on his boot snapping over his shoulder or just roosting it long and high. Now he lowers his eyes and goes for the low 30>35m pass to a target...........and hits them.:thumbsu:

Old dog but with new tricks.:D

I said nothing of the sort, and you still don't get my point. Its nothing regarding Nic personally its the ruck in general. Yeh he had 16 hitouts to advantage, but what happened after that. He may have hit straight down someones throat, who is tackled within 1/2 a second, and still a stat that is a hitout to advantage. Yes in the last quarter I think 3 I saw where he hit straight to someone which resulted in a goal seconds later. This all started because someone said he will hit it down someones throat all day blah blah. If nic wasnt there the result would have been the same. Half your goals came from rebounds off our forward line, it was nothing to do with the ruck. Your mids won just as much ball off our ruck wins. My point was and still is, the ruck has little outcome on the game.... its the midfield battle that counts. Campbell had 16 hitouts or whatever it was, they didn't all, if any result in goals either.

"The star ruckman delivered 48 hit-outs, 16 to advantage, collected 14 disposals, six clearances and kicked a goal in the 77-point win.

His ruck dominance helped West Coast win the clearances 49-36, but Priddis said it is Naitanui's work off the ball that makes him so valuable.

"It's a super effort from Nic to come back this week and do what he did today," Priddis told AFL.com.au.

"He's such an important player for us. His hit-outs to advantage are huge but I respect him more for those chases, the tackling, the smothering that he presents. (I have) so much respect for Nic.

also only one player pert team is the nominated ruckman all other players ate not protected by the particular rule. Was the bont the ruckman for the Dogs or a lost mid trying to mix it with the big boys.

Such is the murky third up space

he is one of the most dangerous hand ballers in the game - lost on most
