Does anyone else think the Eagles are setting themselves up beautifully for a loss in the GF? This year has got '91 written all over it!

It could be any of 10 clubs that'll beat them on that last day, but I'd say the shortest odds for any team's finnish at the end of the year (bar Carlton for the spoon of course) is West Coast as runner up.

Port will win it

i dont know, i like the eagles more than i like any of the victorian contenders. i think if we play geelong, melb or the saints, id back us.

if port of brisbane are there, id back them without doubt, even if we have thrashed both this season. especially port, who are still almost as potent as last year, if they can find form and fitness

The only thing that will let them down, is themselves.

As good as they are, they have 'arrogance' and 'premature ejaculation' written all over their forehead. It has cost Melbourne and St.Kilda dearly last year, and Port the previous years. Just seeing them train blind-folded, kicking goals from the car park, makes me think that they are believing all the media hype.

No doubt they are good enough to win a premiership, talent wise. But they are in for a real shock if they think that their talent alone is going to be enough to get them the premiership.

Are they up to something we don't know? Is this the secret to their success so far?

Yeah, its the way they keep winning games, just screams arrogance

I think you need to distinguish between the west australian media (which prematurely ejaculated around a month ago about West Coast, and are pretty much now reduced to arguing what font 'Eagles 2005' should be engraved on the premiership cup in), and the team and playing group itself, which has showed absolutely sfa signs of arrogance, unless you class playing unrelentingly good football as arrogant. Things like training blindfolded and stuff are not something new this year, Worsfold has done similarly stuff a few weeks each year since he took over- just a way of breaking apart the monotony of 22 weeks of training and keeping the group fresh and focused.

I'm not sure whether we'll go all the way, simply because past years suggest a lot of young sides need to have a near miss before they can come back and win it given the youth of our list its not a calamity if we fail to go all the way this year.

But realistically, we're a good chance to make the GF and once we're there, if we're better than the other team we'll win it. I'm pretty happy with that situation.

i think the total opposite is true. every single one of those blokes is scared ********less of woosha, and theres no way any team coached by him is going to get ahead of themselves. if any one of them start lairising, not putting in 100%, or playing like an arrogant ********, then they get 10 minutes in a room with no windows with their head coach and then a run in the WAFL.

its kind of funny to hear how they talk about him in the press. brett jones reckons "woosha could crush me with his little finger". i think thats the reason we have been so consistent this year, everyone is working their asses off for woosha

it wont be arrogance that kills the eagles, it will be one of the other teams that genuinely have a higher skill level, more and better experience and wiser heads, or better KPP. there are several teams with combinations of these things that could run over us at finals time

Yeah look I tend to agree. I think the Eagles wont win the flag this year I think there a year away and will choke in the finals. But I reckon we'll have it in the bag for sure next year.

They say it takes losing a grand final before you win one!

The weight of expectation gets heavier and heavier as each week passes, the team that plays them (assuming they make it) will have almost zero pressure by comparison, no matter who it is, even Brisbane or Port would go in as underdog and have much less pressure on them.

Eagles have made themselves the team to beat, it is much easier to be the hunter than the hunted.

And every time its said its more stupid than the last.

Lets look at the last 10 seasons:

  • Carlton won in '95 without being in a GF since '87 - when they won.
  • North won in '96 when they hadn't seen a GF in the best part of two decades.
  • In 1997 Adelaide won the first GF they ever played in.
  • Essendon's '00 side hadn't been in a GF since '93,
  • Brisbane's '02 and Port's '04 sides were both playing in their club's first ever GF.
  • Losing in '02 didn't mean Collingwood won in '03. Similarly Sydney lost in '96 and didn't even make another GF. And Geelong lost in '95 despite all the experience of '89, '92 and '94.
In fact, the only cases where "lose one to win one" in the last 20 years is true is West Coast winning in '92 after losing '91 - the next closest was Essendon in '93 after losing '90, and the Essendon side had a substantial turnover in the meantime.

The Lions didnt seem to have problems being the Hunted. They always seemed to be relaxing up there in the Qld savanah preening themselves whilst waiting for the next GF appearance

THE WEST COAST WILL S**T IT IN I think it will be two interstate sides again (it won't be port they will go back to the good old days of falling over with the rope around their necks), I think that the CROWS are good things.
CROWS v EAGLES on that one big day in september the only one to remember.

Well, they were hunted by Collingwood... if you were to be hunted by a team in a GF they would rate pretty highly given their ability to not win grand finals in recent history. ;)

But Brisbane did stand up to that pressure, a lot of teams do not. Geelong in the 80/90s had one of the best teams never to win a flag, there was massive pressure and expectation on that side and it was difficult for them to bear, especially coming from a city like Geelong.

If the Eagles are good enough they will rise above that pressure, but a lot of teams do crumble come September.
