Current Easey St Murders Collingwood * ARREST MADE

Police have arrested a man in Italy over the 1977 murders of Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett in their Easey Street home. He fled Australia in 2017 after he became aware he was a suspect.

The man fled to Greece and couldn’t be arrested because local laws meant charges must be laid within seven years of the offence.

The Easey Street murders are still unsolved.

Police have waited those 15 years for him to leave Greece so he could be arrested. They will now seek to extradite him to Melbourne to face the charges.

A police spokesperson confirmed a 65-year-old dual citizen of Australia and Greece was arrested at an airport in Rome in the early hours on Friday.

For you russian bots , long unsolved double murder in Melbourne

Haven't they already said that the knife he had allegedly found at Vic Park station had same blood type on it as 1 of the victims ? Consider this - did both victims have the same blood type ? If not , why wasn't there 2 blood types found on the knife ? Just throwing it out there ....
Or....how about this scenario - he was having sexual relations with his teacher and the boyfriend enters the room and finds them in bed having fun, the boyfriend goes nuts, and the 17 year old flees ?
There are many possibilities....

The knife had been cleaned, I imagine it was just a tiny speck that had been missed. It was also bent in a way that was consistent with it hitting something hard, like bone.

Investigation has been totally botched up by all concerned. There is no jury in the country that could convict on grounds of beyond reasonable doubt.
How does his lawyer argue against the DNA matching the senen found when raping Armstrong?

Thats the biggest piece of evidence that will convict him.

' and his horror when he understood why the police were so interested in the knife in his car meant his version was suitably convincing.

This should have raised a red flag immediately.

High profile murder in the neighbourhood where two women are stabbed repeatedly with a knife, and a guy “finds” a knife with blood on it shortly after and is supposedly horrified at the significance of it when police find it on him.

Seriously cmon. How naive are these cops!

They haven't matched his DNA , yet. It's an extraordinary case, that's for sure

Oh .... I reckon they would have matched his DNA actually. They would have (covertly) got it from him in Greece before now IMO even if nobody will admit it at this point. He'll also be swabbed in Italy.

No they haven’t. But unless its another family member like his brother Tony, when they get Perry’s DNA and it matches, his lawyer will have to be of another Perry, that of Mason fame to get him off.

The CSK killer was primarily convicted on DNA evidence even though his lawyer did his best to muddy the waters on that one when most of it was circumstantial.

How do you know?

The media releases to date don't even know how or whose DNA was used to identify him as a suspect.

There could have been enough material left in his last known Melbourne residence to get a match

A friendly Greek cop, Doctor, Dentist, waiter or his own rubbish bin could supply enough DNA to match, enough to get an extradition warrant

That will certainly be an interesting part of the investigation to revisit the case after this is all said and done: how rock solid he and his associates must have been under (apparently) intense questioning to clear him.

1. The 17yo had sex with the teachers friend after she was dead. So he wouldn’t have fled in this scenario.
2. The 17yo neglected to mention he was at the scene at any time coming up with some other alibi. You would think if he fled and it was the boyfriend, to save his own ass in case his name popped up at any time, he wold be dobbing the boyfriend in as its not like he had any allegiance to him.

He was called in to do DNA in 2017, then skipped over to Greece . Assuming they were merely waiting for him to leave those borders to obtain an arrest , and now as he is being held in Rome, no doubt DNA will be required .
I don't think they could go through a bin to obtain as that could be anyone's if evident. They're would be legal procedures to obtain DNA.

Even if climbing through inner city windows was more common back in the 70s still think it would be limited to partners and close friends. Not someone you have met once or twice who isn't even sure if they have your phone number correct.

Men chasing women will do strange things.

I believe the story. What I have a really hard time believing is him not seeing a body in the hallway.

Not disputing that at all

By the time the matter gets before the Victorian Courts, a Victorian Court will probably order that a DNA sample be obtained so that the sampling, testing and results can be tested under cross examination.

The Italian Court may actually order a comparison DNA test be conducted before they agree to the extradition.

The Victorian Police case will present a prima facia case that the suspects DNA was found in crime scene where two women were murdered and outline the reasons why the believe that they are his.

The Italian Court will determine whether whether extradition should be granted so the matter can be determined within the Victorian Jurisdition

All I'm suggesting that VicPol have conducted certain actions in the past to ensure that they weren't going on a wild goose chase

The entire case to me is intriguing. The fact that 2 people entered the premises ( assuming after the murders took place) to which none of those persons saw a dead person in the hallway, is truly bizarre. Surely dead bodies start to smell after a day or so, particularly after 87 total stab wounds with blood everywhere through the hallway, on top of one of them stepping into blood on the floor as well without noticing anything. Cmon....
