is that shaun bergin the ex hawthorn rookie that has signed at balwyn? what other ex afl players are playing there this year?

Noble Park star hooks up with Bendigo

NOBLE Park's century goalkicker, premiership player and thrill package Tory Dickson is returning to the VFL.

The brilliant right-footer last Friday committed to the Bendigo Bombers, to play under Shannon Grant, who coached him to the 2009 best and fairest at Frankston.

He will use Noble as a home club when not required for VFL duty.

Bulls president Kevin Wright and coach Mick Fogarty said the club would miss Dickson but was pleased he was going to a higher standard.

"At the end of the day, it's not about the Noble Park footy club. It's about 'Dicko' getting a very good opportunity," Fogarty said, explaining that Dickson was called to a meeting with Essendon coaching staff, including James Hird, and encouraged to join Bendigo and press his claims for a rookie listing in 2012.

I think it might be the ex-Hawk rookie, as Balwyn have signed him from the Bendigo league and Hawthorn recruited Bergin from Bendigo a few years ago (we rookied him in 2003).

Stevie Kenna (ex-Carlton) and Luke Ablett (ex-Sydney) have left Box Hill for Balwyn and Mulgrave respectively.

Looks like Kris Barlow (ex-Hawthorn) has transferred from Blackburn to Rowville.

Damian Cupido tried to join Croydon but his clearance was denied.

Dylan Dipierdomenico (Dipper's son) moved from Balwyn to Doncaster.

Beau Dowler (ex-Hawthorn) joined Noble Park.

Ben Kinnear (I think, ex-Collingwood) has joined East Ringwood.

Andrew Renton (ex-Box Hill) has left the Box Hill Hawks for East Ringwood.

Tigers are ready

IT will be a new-look Balwyn squad that takes the field for Round 1 of the Eastern Football League Division 1 season this weekend, but coach Daniel Harford's expectations remain as high as ever.

The Tigers were disappointed with last season's result, having been bundled out in the preliminary final by Scoresby after finishing second on the ladder.

The club has been a popular destination for former-AFL players in recent years but it will be without a great deal of that AFL experience in 2011.

Patrick Bowden is off to the Goulburn Valley, Ben Holland drops down the divisions to join Boronia and evergreen Joel Smith has retired.

Those losses, combined with the departures of regulars Roc Harry and Jake Ryan, would have most clubs worried, but the Tigers have sourced plenty of quality to refresh their list.

BLACKBURN

Coach: Steve Cochrane

Last year: 9-9 (seventh)

Ins: Ryan Bilalis (Doncaster), Zachary Chapman (AFL Canberra), Thomas Farrelly (SFL), Ben Fraser (Warrnambool & District Football Netball League), Luke Maguire, Daniel Meiklejohn (VAFA), Anthony Simpson (Ontario Australian Football League), Jared Worsteling (Ovens & Murray Football League).

Coach's comments: "I suppose, like every side, we're striving to play finals and re-position ourselves in the top five. Last year I don't feel was a true indication of where we're at. We've had a healthy turnover so it's a new sort of look. My expectation is to push for a finals spot."

CROYDON

Coach: Brett Chandler (new)

Last year: 10-8 (fifth)

Ins: Nicholas Braybon (Central Highlands Football League), Michael Cardamone, Shane O'Donnell, (VAFA), Damian Cupido (Ovens & Murray Football League), Beau Kitto (YVMDFL), James Loonstra (Boronia), Trent Martin, Daniel Mcconnell (West Australian Football League), Cameron Vanflorestein (Warrandyte).

Coach's comments: "We've set goals, and obviously we want to make finals. We want to be more consistent on a week-to-week basis. Last year we followed too many wins with a bad loss. We'll have a more defensive mindset."

EAST BURWOOD

Coach: Greg Freemantle (new)

Last year: 8-10 (eighth)

Ins: Leigh Bailey (Croydon), Tom Miles (Waverley Blues), Alexander Fiore (Knox), Mathew Jessop (VAFA), Jarrod Macdonald (Vermont), Marco Mollica (Boronia), Thomas Nicol (VAFA), Jason Wilmot (AFL Central Australia).

Coach's comments: "This is a celebration year for the club so we want to make sure we want to have a good year. They're a relatively young group, which leaves plenty of room for development. Our aim is to go out and smash every team by 20 goals. We may not be able to, but it's a really good aim and we'll go out to try and do it."

EAST RINGWOOD

Coach: Chris Cogan

Last year: 4-14 (eleventh)

Ins: Gary Conyers, Andrew Mcguinness, Julien Moussi, Andrew Renton, (VFL & TAC CUP), Tom Goodwin (YVMDFL, Ben Kinnear (EDFL), Connor Munro (West Perth DFDC), Aaron Richardson, Brendan Riordan (AFL Queensland), Jayden Rosewarne (VAFA).

Outs: Peter Cassidy-Marsh (Ferntree Gully Eagles), James Gould (Heathmont), Benjamin Hicks (Montrose), Daniel Fletcher (Silvan), Brock Ferguson (South Belgrave), James Crowle, John Del Giudice (South Croydon), Dylan Ross (Sydney AFL), Michael Barnes (Upper Ferntree Gully), Scott Carroll, Nicholas Iliov, Shane Thompson (VFL & TAC CUP), Mason Kelly (The Basin), Tom Leechman (VAFA), Aaron Fiora, Rick Saunders (Western Border Football League), Martin Ekers, Samuel Gooley, Ben Hinton, Sean Osborne (YVMDFL).

Coach's comments: "The guys have had a really good summer on the track. We feel we've added value to the squad. If the group buys in to what we're doing, success will come. I don't know the timeframe for that, but it'd want to be sooner rather than later. We've got our own expectations and we'll be working to meet those."

KNOX

Coach: Jon Knight (new)

Last year: 4-14 (tenth)

Ins: Ryan Jeffery (AFL Riverina), Todd Daniher (Balwyn), Robert Chatwin, Tyler Frost (Eastern Lions), David Meachen (Glen Waverley Hawks), Joseph Crabtree (Omeo District Football League), Thomas Hardisty (Ringwood), Rhys Joachim (SFL).

Coach's comments: "Every game is going to be hard for us, we know that. We're going to make it hard for opponents to score against us, first and foremost. I would say, without saying we'll be in the five, I want to make sure we win seven or eight, that'd be a great year to build on for next year."

MULGRAVE

Coach: Hayden Stanton

Last year: 16-2 (premiers division two)

Ins: Luke Ablett (VFL & TAC CUP), Dane Andonov (Vermont), Mitchell Collins (MPNFL), Thomas Williams (YVMDFL), Steve Winterton (SFL).

Outs: Tom Clappers (SFL), Bradley Fowler, Daniel Stokie (MPNFL), Jason Kokas (VAFA), Luke Muirhead (AFL Queensland), Damian Nelson, Matthew Nelson, Rhys Spooner, Christopher Telley (Silvan), David Waser (Alberton Football League), Kade Wilsmore, Rhett Wilsmore (WRFL).

Coach's comments: "We want to finish 11th or above. If we finish 11th, we stay in Division 1. Absolutely the only thing we're chasing. Our line-up, if everyone's fit, would be better than last year. However our depth is probably more questionable so injuries will be crucial. Everyone's fit and well at the moment."

NOBLE PARK

Coach: Mick Fogarty

Last year: 13-5 (premiers)

Ins: Timothy Beech, Ewen Mckenzie (SFL), Beau Dowler, Tom Paterakis (VFL & TAC CUP), Joshua Ferguson, Daniel Rigg, Jeremy Vigliarolo (MPNFL), Daniel Galante (YVMDFL), Ashley Hard (AFL Riverina), Timothy Harper (Knox), Luke Mann (Croydon).

Outs: Malith Amarasekera (Rowville), Lance Baptist, Adam Nichols, Gavin Vassallo (SFL), Lachlan Delahunty, Tory Dickson (VFL & TAC CUP), Frank D'Angelo, Cory Hargreaves, Glen Hawthorn, Geoffrey Humphreys, Sojitha Jayasinghe, Aleks Mathewson (MPNFL), Sam Parlapiano, Jake Williams (VAFA), Lachlan Tindal (Vermont).

Coach's comments: "I think this group has the potential to be a top 5 side over the next three or four years. I think the talent's there. This side could have a real impact. Whether it takes them to another premiership, I don't know. At the end of the day, we'll come up against every side this year with the same expectations of playing finals."

NORWOOD

Coach: Kevin Tibaldi

Last year: 11-6-1 (fourth)

Ins: Kris Renkema (Chirnside Park), Matthew Aver, Michael Niezen (VAFA), Ryan Constance, Dylan Hoskin, Isaac Livingston, Chris Taylor (NFL), Jake Stevenson (North Ringwood), Nawid Zaher (Black Diamond AFL).

Outs: Jason Cant, Tom Denham (Nunawading), Scott Day (Goulburn Valley Football League), Dylan Decler, Kyle Hudson, Daniel Hurley (YVMDFL), Jarrod Gardam (Bayswater), Simon Godfrey (Mitcham), Daniel Robinson (North Ringwood).

Coach's comments: "I know the expectations will be that we do that well, or better than last year. I think we just need to be as competitive as we can be and develop as many young players we can. This year it will be a challenging season in terms of tactics. Zones will be the run of the mill. It's looking hard to score."

SCORESBY

Coach: Dale Bower

Last year: 15-3 (runners-up)

Ins: Lachlan Bain (Wantirna South), Rory Burns (The Basin), Beau Cosson, Bradley Jones (East Burwood), Chris Hoegel (VFL & TAC CUP), Ryan Parsons (VAFA), Brett Saunders (MPNFL).

Outs: Lachlan Carey, Joel Cross (South Australia National Football League), Zachary Clark, David Del Papa, Jonathon Patton, Stephen Scott, Ryan Wilson (VFL & TAC CUP), Anthony Faulkner, James Halstead-Wylde (Mitcham), Marc Hardy, Nathan Hicks, David Mathers, Jonathan Roberts, Christopher Toth (Rowville), Blake Roberts (SFL), Thomas Stubley (YVMDFL), Cory Tuckey (Upper Ferntree Gully), Daniel Wood (North Ringwood).

Coach's comments: "I think you have to take one step at a time. We'd need to win 14-15 games to finish top three. That's our aim. That gives you a really good chance to play in a grand final. We want to win enough games to give ourselves that chance. We expect to get better on last year."

SOUTH CROYDON

Coach: Ben Delarue

Last year: 6-12 (ninth)

Ins: James Crowle, John Del Giudice (East Ringwood), Darcy Brown, Kirk Kinne (VAFA), Benn Fischer (Bayswater), Lee Stockdale (North Gippsland Football Netball League), Dylan Troutman (YVMDFL).

Outs: Jesse Baker (Bayswater), Matthew Jones (AFL Queensland), Andrew Pennington (Ferntree Gully Eagles).

Coach's comments: "I think every side has got to be realistic, but you need to have aspirations to play finals. We'll start with that. We'd like to think we'd be better than last year. If we got into the top five it'd be a phenomenal effort. We just have to do our best and, hopefully, that's good enough."

VERMONT

Coach: David Banfield

Last year: 10-8 (sixth)

Ins: Mitchell Bonuda, Bryce Fisher (YVMDFL), Anthony Chiodo (VAFA), Jason Collins (Murray Football League), Kyle Emley (Bayswater), Benjamin Fagan (Goulburn Valley Football League), Samuel Magro, Kalem Post, Daniel Stephens, Chris Thompson (Forest Hill), Lachlan Tindal (Noble Park), Marcus Tippett (AFL Queensland),, Glenn Waters (EDFL).

Outs: Dane Andonov (Mulgrave), Jarrod Macdonald (East Burwood), Michael Romas (Mitcham), Mark Cullen (Silvan), Steven Daniher (Central Murray Football Netball League), Wayne Mcinerney (Bayswater), Thomas Mendico, Victor Siciliano (EDFL), Michael Rogneda (NFL), James Shambrook (YVMDFL), Matthew Smith (Boronia).

Coach's comments: "Last year's group wasn't good enough. They didn't deserve a spot in the finals and finished sixth accordingly. We looked at ways we could improve and we've gone down the pathway of culture first, and strategy second. It's an important year for the club, it's our 50th in the EFL and 50th in first division, and that means a lot. I really just want to sink our teeth in to Round 1." Leg 4

Kyle Martin = Absolute gun

Vermont having real problems this year - 0-5 start after giving up a five goal 3/4 time lead to Blackburn today to go down by a few points (Blackburn came home with a strong breeze and some assistance in white).

Been a few factors involved including a couple of injuries and suspensions, youngish list, not getting involved in spending four figure sums on players and the fact they have played the teams who are currently 2nd to 5th on the ladder.
They have been close a few times and their only real poor effort was at Knox.

There is a bit of a fight now to make sure they stay in first division but their is light at the end of the tunnel if they can keep the current group of young under 20 players around the club.

Can't see them staying up at this rate.

Can't see them staying up at this rate.

They have still to play sides in the bottom half of the ladder that currently they havnt. The pressure is on but to say they can not win 6 or so games with 13 rounds to go is an early call.

Vermont's 0-5 start is their worst in the 50 years of Eastern beating their two 0-4 starts in 1965 & 1979.
And they could be 0-7 with Balwyn & ER the next couple of weeks. I reckon they will finish with 4 to 6 wins, avoid relegation & probably finish 9th or 10th.

Very true but looking at the fixture thier problem will be, they only play most of the other bottom sides once.
They still have to play Balwyn twice, East Ringwood twice, Croydon twice, Norwood, East Burwood, Noble Park, Knox, South Croydon, Blackburn & Mulgrave.

Mulgrave, Croydon or South Croydon to go down with Lilydale most likely coming back up. Having said that though, still a long way to go & anything can happen.

Makes a nice change to see Vermont getting screwed by the men in white as opposed to the usual cosy run they get

Even better to see them sitting at 0-5 and would be bloody gold to see them relegated this year

Would go to Vermont's Ground with intention of mocking that club and rightfully so too if they got relegated
