I remember the days when i was a young kid and couldn't wait for the weekend to watch you play and kick those freakish goals and go to the park and attempt them myself haha. The sheer wizardry and brilliance on field is for all to see, admire, cherish and at times simply laugh at the absurdity of his gift.

I think of countless highlights and smile, I’ll listen to my 4yo scream Eddie Betts!!! as he commentates his own games in the backyard and chuckle.

But what I will revere above all else is one of the most extraordinary journeys of growth this game has ever seen. How a young boy entered a game and left it a man, husband, father, leader, mentor, idol, symbol.

Thank you for making so many people want to be better because of who you are.

Eddie was my favourite player before he played his first game and everything he has done in football and in life since that time has only made my admiration grow.

Went to a family day with my daughter before he had played his first game. Fev was all the go at the time so the crowds around him and a few others were too great to contemplate waiting in line for a signature and a brief couple of seconds. Anyway this young guy was standing all alone in the middle of the ground but he had the classic Eddie Betts smile and he was so humble and engaging and delightful to talk to. He really put time and effort into talking with my daughter. You couldn't help but be impressed with him. He signed my daughter's Carlton cap (which I still have somewhere) and his interactions with my daughter, I think, confirmed her love of Carlton from that time.

Everything he has done has just emphasised those first positive impressions.

As Gethelred has already said:
