Eddie McGuire makes on-air gaffe about Adam Goodes and King Kong

Yes. As OB1 raises the point, my Grandmother was separated from her family purely because of her race during World War 2. Her mother and her sister were killed because of their race. Their family, and friends were killed because of their race. Does that grant me justification to take offence at being insulted because of my race?
I am aboriginal myself, and I do think that racism towards white people is an issue in some cases (eg. Public Enemy, could you imagine if a bunch of blonde white kids made an album called "Fear of a White Planet"?). It isn't as much of a social issue though, as in general the people who can make life difficult for someone based on race are usually white (police officers, employers etc.)
But it isn't really relevant to the discussion.

The only thing I get out of all this is how unforgiving and judgmental people are today.

He made a mistake. He is sorry for it. Nobody got killed.

Lets move on.

There is a massive difference between bullied to the point of suicide and a grown man being called an ape by a child?

I agree, I just think we're at opposite ends.

Out of interest, can you rank for me in order the worst things to be vilified about to the least? Or maybe a top 10?

You might need some help.

Plenty of moral compasses in here, can ya'll get together and put together a list for everyone else?

I'm sure you will all be able to agree 100%, it is pretty black and white clear cut.

I
At some point there has to be a clear distinction between someone saying something with malicious intent, versus someone making a gaffe or slip of the tongue - or hell even a deliberate crack at humour using a stereotype.

I don't doubt that what Eddie said was offensive to Adam Goodes, but i do not believe it was uttered with clear maliciousness in mind. Surely the premise of racism is more than someone had their feelings hurt.

Racism is about discriminating against someone of a different race, deliberately denying them something that otherwise they might deserve or claiming a righteous superiority of one race over another. I struggle to see how Eddie was trying to do either of those things.

Now, I understand that the use of primates as a description can be derogatory.

However there are differences between races - genetics is racist. Now if you point out a genetic difference that is favourable it is ok, point out a genetic difference that is unfavourable it is racist. That is horsehit.

I'm betting on average Majak Daw compares favourably in the north melbourne showers. That isn't racist, it is genetics.

I honestly believe people shy away from having genuine conversations about it for fear of having something labelled as racist. Harry Obrien came out and labelled the country as being casual with racism. How is that not offensive to me? He is calling me casual with racism, he is calling my neighbour casual with racism - all because we live in the same country?

How is that not just a broad sweeping comment designed to cause offence?

Maybe Harry is just casual with it as well.....
can't believe anyone would write this hopelessly stereotypical bullshit. Totally offensive.

Never mind, I wasn't actually trying to prove a point via hard numbers. It was more an illustrative hunch, given I haven't heard of too many children being murdered in race related cases in AU. Could be wrong though! Do you think I am?

The main point was: bullying can lead to suicide. It is not harmless.
No, no I don't think bullying is harmless. I have never held that view and have never stated that view.

What I don't understand is why you would state that there have been more child suicides than racially motivated homicides when you don't know whether that is the case. What did it add to your argument? I may have missed it but did someone suggest the opposite?

About a week ago - i think on the eve of the Ryder Cup - Garcia was being interviewed -and was asked about his relationship with Woods -Sergio made a light hearted comment that Tiger and him were mates -and to prove it he would invite Tiger around for dinner every night (of the ryder cup) and they would have fried chicken every night

Yeah that one was strange to me I laughed a bit at that. Something about fried chicken being associated with black people poverty ect. I think Sergio said it with intent to be a smart arse. That dude needs to shut up and do something on the golf course for once.

On this Goodes to Eddie thing. The whole thing is one of the great gaffes of all time. Truly brilliant comedy from Eddie McGuire.

Don't hold back, tell us exactly what kind of help I need? Interested in your reply.

Dr of Communications, one Eddie McGuire. Wonder how RMIT feel right now?
I didn't realise he had been awarded an honorary Doctorate. That's pretty funny.

If he had've actually done the coursework required to earn a doctorate in Communications the honest way he most likely wouldn't have made this gaff.

Yes nobody got killed, nobody at all. Whatever makes you sleep easier.
Lets put this in perspective.
How good have we got it in this country when this is the most outrageous issue of the day.

But if you feel the need to be outraged to lessen the guilt of your comfortable little life then I'm not going to stop you.

http://www.eoc.sa.gov.au/eo-you/discrimination-laws/south-australian-laws/racial-vilification-act

"Racial vilification is behaviour in a public place that incites hatred, serious contempt or ridicule of a person or group of people, because of their race.

A person's race includes their colour, country of birth, ancestry, ethnic origin or nationality."

So what Harry did was racial vilification. Let alone the fact, that while he did not say it there was a definite tone that the Australians he was calling racist were the ones with a skin colour different from his.

In the real world think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that. I have come to the conclusion i really don't like stupidity, especially in its nastiest forms of racism and superstition (religion). The modern world is turning people into social lepers, our behavioral patterns are changing and what we have here is a failure to communicate!

If someone said to me ''Mate, you'll like this guy when you meet him, he's an Ape'' i'd say umm? a what? what do you mean he's an Ape? is he hairy? big?

Same guy says ''Mate, you'll like this guy when you meet him, he's an Abbo-fellow-Boong'' i would know the person is black (along with being outraged at the comments of course)

To much has been made over this, Goodes IMO should publicly apologize to the girl and admit he may have made a mistake.

Id like to congratulate you for being the smartest coolest funniest best bloke in the world, and I imagine your mates are not far behind.

You are perfection, society needs more of you.

The sarcasm is strong with you but what he said was true. Gareth Bale is often called a monkey/chimp because of his appearance but that's not racist because he is white and looks like one. Adam Goodes does as well, does Brett Goodes or Cyril Rioli? No, because they don't look like apes. The fact is that Adam Goodes does have ape like features and it is not to do with his skin colour.

Brett Ratten looks like a rat? Is that racist too?

(religion).

He breached South Australian law? In Victoria? Because of a 'definite tone'?

A year after angry protests at a tent embassy on the island, a scheme to transform the area with new bridges, a sculpture park and an amphitheatre have led to accusations of desecration of a sacred site.

Priorities.
