The kid is only 19. I think in 12 months or so, we'll get a clearer picture. But there is plenty of upside to him, given his size and attributes.
There is Jen, but there's also big question marks about how he's going to take advantage of his upcoming physical awesomeness.

I think the scary thing is that he isn't even fully physically developed yet, even with his frame. Plenty of development to come. It'll be a real interesting watch where he is at in the next 12-18 months. I do have good hopes about him.

Only a few months ago people were doubtful of 21 year old, 194cm McInness…

he’s since shown some improvement

Allan not even 20 yet…

These taller kids can take a touch longer

What’s more how it be judged that he isn’t up to AFL grade when he has not had senior game time?

Some players just never look particularly great at slower, more congested VFL level, but look better at senior level

What was the previous 3 weeks? Going along just fine atm, all these negative Nellie's about his AFL potential don't understand development. Nothing like Josh Daicos's start at the club, it's a stupid comparison.
I know...anyone would think that a 15 disposal games was his normal output. He got 25 the week before, another 25 in round 1.....

Not sure posters are as negative as you think. More that expectations were quite high, the club signed him to 4 years quickly, he had impressive physical stats and hadn't played a lot U18 giving a real vibe and hope we could have a draft steal on our hands. Fast forward 18 months and that hope has dropped a bit. Maybe you were not hoping he would have shown more to this point and think what he has done is enough to expect him to become a good AFL player but if you are you are in the minority.

Of the 56 18 yos taken in the main draft with him 25 have played senior footy, that are the group most of the stars of that draft will come from. It doesn't mean his won't make it just he has taken a slower path than most if he does make it.

If you look at our current best 22 players who were drafted by Collingwood as 18 yos, all are ahead of him at the same stage of their career. Moore, IQ, Maynard, De Goey, McCreery, ND, JD, Elliott, Steele, Pendles. If you look at those traded in after being drafted as 18 yos at other clubs they are all ahead of him. Howe, WHE, Lippa, Crisp, Hill, Mitchell.

Josh Daicos was the comparison because out of the Collingwood draftees who are now good players he was the slowest starter.

I am still hanging out for Allan to come good, showing some AFL traits and pushing for senior selection would grow my confidence.

The other thing with that group who've gone on to be good is that they all had a clear strength from the start and not just athletic capability.

I didn't think Josh would make it, but he was composed and evasive with a lovely kick from the start. Elliott and Howe stood on heads in a marking contest and had great hands, McCreery a lunatic when it came to pressure, Moore's attack in the air was AFL standard from the get go, Maynard a terrific competitor, etc...

Allan still has to discover a strength.

He has. Clearances and tackles eventhough played out of his natural position.
The two weeks prior he had 11 clearances.
Prepare to be surprised by this lad.

Can anyone tell me why there's like only five posts on a page in this thread for the past couple of pages?

Edit: Someone from the Politics board thinks he knows everything about footy too - argggh the basement dwellar types.

I love the faith you have in the kid FJ. :thumbsu:

I’m confident he’ll turn out okay… and by that i mean a 100 game player

Just hard to see where it’s at for him at AFL level… when the coaching staff have clearly decided that they will squeeze every bit from the current line up in pursuit of a 2nd flag.

At another club he probably would’ve debuted by now

It seems injuries are the only way some of these kids will get a look in

I’d rather we blood some youth now… rather than expecting them to come in during finals and perform in a high pressure, big crowd game
Agree - better to start giving players game time in season than having injuries force our hand during finals, when the stakes are so much higher.

I haven’t been watching night VFL, but It seems that the potential is greater than the reality.

Any chance Ed’s best position at the end of the year is TradeBait?

Anyone from Freo or Weagles we’d like?

I doubt we're going to be dangling a 19 year-old we signed for 4 years to be honest. If we've been this patient with Macrae and McInnes, I think we'll show the same for Allan

That’s the average for the role at that level for someone that’s going to make the next step. Take Macrae he gets 8-10 clearances at that level on his ear, but is struggling when he then needs to go to work against Cripps, Green, Heeney, Steele, Rowell etc.

What I believe sr36 is wanting to see with those good numbers is LDU style ability to get from inside to outside or Mitchell like distribution or Butters type competitiveness. Have you seen that? I haven’t yet and that’s really the crux of it a lot of hope it’s in there along with some frank assessments that it isn’t yet.

Considering he’s spending more time inside it could be that they’re prepping him to replace a Mitchell or Pendles so the first step is he needs to be better than Macrae and Sullivan. That’s a little while off based on what I’ve seen in 2024…

We're still only 3-3. Got to get to a strong position before we start preparing for finals. And frankly how is a couple of games in April going to be a significant difference in terms of someone's performance in finals?

It was interesting hearing Hardwick on AFL360 talk about the huge gulf between VFL and AFL. It's on show constantly with young mids

The politics page is a cesspool of foreign bacteria that flows from high up in the mountains of Tajikistan all the way to the red sea. It makes the occasional detour through Russia but ultimately ends up in the Sewers Canal

I didn’t say April - I said in season.
I’ve made the point previously ONE player in the team is not going to detract from our chances to win. That is just being completely disrespectful to the other 22.
Giving Macrae, and Sullivan games in season will allow us to assess their ability to step up.
So that we are prepared if and when the time comes.
