Dominated the combine with 1st in the 20M sprint (2nd best ever) 5th in agility (@194cm and 83kg) and top 10 vertical jump.

And for those desperately hating Hine saying "another athletic utility who can't play footy" . . .

His old man is Freo royalty.

So yeah he has the basics covered.

You only really mentioned his athletic abilities, you didn't mention anything about his footy ability.

Had never heard of him but all I heard was 194cm, big frame, finds the ball and fast and instantly thought Cripps.

But at that height, pace and frame he sounds like a potential true utility?

Sounds a bit like Reef McInnes?

Well now there are a few vids out covering his footy - seems composed and decisive, seems to play within himself speed wise with only one quick burst I notice albeit from a restricted season due to his growth spurt related back issues.

Add to that his father's influence and the atmosphere of growing up in a footy family I would say he has the basics covered.

Do you know how well, even if only on his preferred foot?
His kicking is fine on both feet but don't forget that he didn't play much this year due to a back injury, so it's hard to really assess it. He seems to chose good options and hits his targets. Don't forget that most of our side couldn't hit a target under Bucks but they all seemed to improve over night under fly

Already different to his dad, who was a a medium pace solid mid with a great tank and short range disposal, at least in his first few years at Hawthorn. Like a lesser Rob Harvey. Good player but no gun.

The son looks way faster and more penetrating. If he has his dads honest consistency and durability plus his already apparent greater height speed and length of kicking he'll be a cracker.

Just watched the SA vs WA champs game which seems like the only game he played in the tournament. This kid ran a top 5 of all time 20 metre sprint time, but you wouldn't know it watching him, apart from one play where he took a few bounces and looked decently paced. Just isn't evident in his a game yet. Although, he did continually find space on his opponent (and wasn't used a few times).

He played on a wing and didn't do a heap, but a couple of really nice passes on the run shows is kicking is up to scratch. He's an interesting player, really long body, is key position size but isn't present in marking contests so I didn't get to see how he marks overhead.
Played really outside and didn't seem like a contested ball winner but moves bloody well for his size. It's hard to get a grip on what he is exactly. It may take a while for him to find his niche and develop aspects of his game, he's coming from a fair way back with his injury and late development, so there's a lot there to work with, but a wait and see at this stage.

What is the link to watch that game?

Interesting to hear Hine post draft last night say they got an idea last week he could still be in play at our pick.

Prompted a quick trip to WA last week for another face to face meeting. Good stealth work from us as the links to Allan didn’t seem to grow from this last minute dash.

Will be really interesting to watch him develop. Loved that Derek actually smiled in his interview, seemed really happy to have got him. With his size, speed and athleticism can see him playing a bit in 2023. If he turns into the smokey that ends up being underestimated he should play good footy early. Excited.

What I want personally from a tall mid /utility is the ability to keep their feet in a contest, find the footy and hit targets by foot and by hand with a purpose towards going forward, which Allan does.

The combine stats are nice and all, but the footy part is what I'm happy about. Plus he looks like he'll fill out his frame over time too.

He was better than good. Recruited to the AFL late and his last few years were injury prone. Retired with a degererative knee by 28 yo.

However had 4 full seasons at Hawks and won a B&F in a flag year 91 and AA 93 and 94. He was right at the top of the comp in those years.

I'm just surprised with all this upside and being a WA boy WC didn't take him.

It’s handy they took Hewett, who presumably we would have passed on had he gotten to #19, and left Allan for us who we were prepared to take.

With those athletic attributes, ability to play anywhere and accumulate the footy, I wonder whether he projects to be a long term Crisp replacement.

Its true. This is where he was ranked

Twomey 14th
Pm Bangers not in the top 40
Knightmare not in the top 20
M Alvaro (Rookieme) 25th
Davo27 20th
Knightmare Analysis:

Pick 19, Collingwood: Edward Allan

Doerre Power Rankings: outside-20

Recruited from: Claremont (WA)

Likely role: To be determined - a tall utility with a unique athletic profile, Allan is still arguably finding his best position. Collingwood can mould Allan into anything of their choosing from a tall midfielder to a key position player or a tall flanker. No long-term best position is obvious at this point and is likely to become clearer once Allan stops growing and realises with a few years in the AFL system the full scope of his physical and athletic capabilities.

Readiness and likelihood to play: Allan is a project player and development in the VFL should be the focus. If he receives opportunities in 2023 that should be seen as a bonus rather than the expectation.

What you should know: The son of former Hawk and Docker Ben, Edward Allan is a tall utility of key position height who looks most likely to develop into either a tall midfielder or wingman. Allan is a skilful and mobile tall who won the 20m sprint at this year's AFL Draft combine, covers a lot of ground and finds the ball in bunches. Growing 20cm and gaining 20kg in the past two years, Allan is seen as one of the upside picks in this draft.

You're underselling Ben Allan.

He had hit a really high level for the Hawks before leaving for Freo. Then who cared after that.
