Shambolic. Why televise something like that. If the AFL took this seriously, the legacy and the cause this is for - a little effort would go a long way to getting 30k+ to Marvel and actually getting some ratings. The same cast and clown act every year is past tiresome now.

If they're going to have this pre-finals week off surely they could do something better with it. Don't see why the Brownlow can't be moved to this night or weekend.
Just checked the Wikipedia page on the game and it was still getting 25k crowds as recently as 3-4 years ago.

Ever since Ch 7 took over the broadcast it seems to have fallen apart. Don't think giving it this slot instead of its midweek midyear spot works in its favour.

Has a year or two on it's contract with Ch 7 and then if it's still going will probably go to Fox Footy.

Watched for about 5 minutes, it was literally just kick to kick. It was the perfect example of how high scoring doesn't automatically equal entertainment. It would be better as that touch footy version of afl for old people with more celebrities if they were at least legitimately trying.

High scoring doesn't have to mean uncontested. This is such a stupid way to counter argue

This is the key. It worked well as a Tuesday/Wednesday night game on Ch 9 as a bit of light humor. And it used to be promoted on The Footy Show for several weeks in advance. Fans want serious sport on a Friday night.

After years of contrived finishes I'm shocked to read of how this played out...well no I'm not.

Made the decision to stop watching this rubbish last year as I'm not interested in the AFL version of the globetrotters.

Being a bye week though wanted some footy action so tuned i to a sport I dislike - NRL it was a pretty good game.

Sound like what you want Gill you peanut.

Watched 10 minutes of people just running and kicking freely end to end.. no tackling.. nothing... wondered what I was watching and turned it off. i could go down to the local oval myself tomorrow and do exactly what they did, alone.

The only way to save this, is to make huge changes.. but for the good. They obviously tried to copy the NBA All Star games getting teams to score 300 points each. How about using this weekend to make it an All Star weekend. But actually have interesting AFL related stuff going on. Have a series of competitions = goal kicking, handballing, running, etc. Play a few games, telecast live on TV... maybe a 'draft' game, with all the top 50 players in the upcoming draft invited for an exhibition game, and then on day 2 have a state of origin, but rather than use AFL players.. how about using the best players around the country not on an AFL list.. give these guys some exposure. And maybe they will play properly and with some passion for their state..

There are some pretty good ideas here. Not enough cringe though, so I doubt the AFL would be interested.

If it saved a life, then it did it's job, remember this is a charity match.

Not exactly a rich history in the "charity" part of the event. Only a small percentage in the past was even going to the foundation. It is ok to say the product is rubbish even if it is for a good cause. If the product is better surely that is better for the charity side of it as well if it returns better patronage.

I've only read the report, but the obvious reaction is of course "dafuq?"

"Jimmy Bartel in his customary long sleeves..." wouldn't even crack the top 20 bizarre/disturbing things I read from the report.

This game reminds me of watching wrestling. We loved watching it as kids but as we’ve got older, we’ve become more cynical. The game tonight is a bit of fun and kids, who it’s aimed it, they love it. That’s all that matter.

Daddy, who are these fat men playing football and why are they playing on a soccer ground?

All good ideas ...

... but there is still room to have a footy match for past legends amongst all that, just not the way they did it last night. I’m sure most viewers wouldn’t have minded it being a light hearted spectacle but just not that way. EJ Witten game is a great idea and it’s been popular before, it’s just that last night it was very very poorly executed.

If we can't have proper state of origin or the like why can't we have a game like this that utilises retired players no more than say 5 years out of the game with some planning as to how it could be taken kinda seriously or something?

Turned it off after 10 minutes, utter crap.

I would go the other way, try to make it ultra competitive. Play only players who are just out of the game or still playing local or state league. Add in any or all of this years retirees and any delistings.

Something is better than nothing.

It also promotes awareness.
