yep, seems like their modus operandi.

I mean, that's kind of the point: republicans haven't believed in the virtue of charity for a very long time. It's a tax writeoff for them, not a means by which they enrich the society around them.

This is behaviour long encouraged and abetted by the system they live in. If you're only noticing it now, you've been living in a dream world for a while.

Is it? I always thought the traditional (ie not MAGA) right-wing belief in small government argued that providing for the less well-off was the role of charity, not government.

Of course, that encompasses a form of power - the needy have to rely on the largesse of the more fortunate.

it applies in every capitalist society though. charitable tax deductions can be a device to limit tax. that said, taylor swift gave i think, $10m. just cos you’re rich doesn’t necessarily switch off your humanity.

I cringe whenever I read headlines of celebrities (or other rich folk) donating to causes, disaster relief or otherwise. To me, such donations should be made because you want to donate, not because you want to be slapped on the back for being so generous. Particularly when the amounts they donate are equivalent to finding the loose change that has fallen behind the sofa cushions.

So maybe Musk and Zuckerberg have made generous donations but just not bragged about them?*

*No, I do not think this is likely the case.

last sentence - :100:

in terms of priorities, i’m far less fussed about the donations being public than you are. it’s of more moment to me that the money flows so long as it’s a worthwhile cause.

as far as billionaires go, i’m a fan of warren buffett. much of his charitable work is well known, although i’m confident not all. including his huge charitable trust, which he set up with gates. berkshire hathaway also gives to charities.

in some ways, i like knowing where the donations go as it can in itself tell a tale

But ever since the Rockerfellers and Vanderbilts - which is a bloody long time ago now - the wealthy used charitable causes for things other than altruism or charity. One takes leave to question precisely how charitable you're being when on one hand you break unions and viciously apply scientific management wmin your factories and use your wealth to purchase political clout and on the other give significant amounts in charity that you can then recoup as a tax expense.

That last one is Henry Ford, btw.

This guy really paid other actual gamers to play on his POE 2 account and pretended he is good at the game? The guy is peak loser

A billionaire taking credit for other's work. Who would have thought?

So strange. Insecurity on the level of the orange one. Lying about the most inane stuff just for the sake of it.
