Trent is the greatest right winger who probably ever lived. Unlucky for him that his entire career he has played in a Liverpool team who doesnt play with wingers.

If he was playing in the 90's in a classic 4-4-2. He would be a god. Haha.

He's not a forward so doesnt play in a front three. Then we have a three man midfield so wingers dont exist. So he's kinda shoehorned into the full back role. He's so talented we need him on the pitch but he can also be a liability down back, not all the time, just some of the time.

It's a predicament for sure.
Salah is a winger.

Alexander-Arnold is more a 'wide midfielder' in the 1990s mould, before front 3's and goal scoring wingers who cut inside became all the rage again.

The game and tactics have evolved though, and the role of full backs is far more attacking than it was back then.

If David Beckham was in Liverpool's current squad, like Alexander-Arnold he would play at right back, not right wing. That's just the way our system works (and it clearly does work).

United under Fergie and Wenger's Arsenal both played 4-4-2 which was mostly 4-4-1-1 with players like Cantona, Rooney, Bergkamp in the no. 10 position. Becks had a similar style to Trent but without the defensive responsibilities. He had Irwin or Gary Neville to mop things up. Both those full backs also got forward, as did Ashley Cole for Arsenal.

The arrival of Mourinho to Chelsea changed things. He was brash and he won trophies so people speculated that maybe 4-3-3 was superior but if you look at that Chelsea side, bankrolled by Abramovich, it had some great players. Cech, Cole, Terry, Makele, Essien, Lampard, Robben, Drogba. Fergie, with Quieroz influence, dabbled with 4-3-3 but they mostly had proper wingers like Giggs, Ronaldo, Nani and Young. United under Fergie won 5 more titles after Mourinho won his two.
