The law says

It is an offence if a player:
touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

His arm has made his body unnaturally bigger. It doesn't matter whether he moved his arm towards the ball. It also doesn't matter that the ball was deflected towards the goal. How do we know that an Everton player wouldn't have followed up if the ball had not been handled?

I think it's handball, and a clear and obvious error that VAR should have got the ref to have another look at.

Not clear at all for me

That looks like a normal arm position to me. The only way he avoids contact there is by having no arm. I don't see any deliberate movement towards the ball either.

Definitely one of those "thank goodness for that" type of win for us, especially 1 nil down after 21 secs. and 2-1 down after 20. Two home PL games in a row we've conceded in the 1st minute.

Eze and Olise showed their quality by scoring all 3 goals, all them great goals. Both subbed off after 70 mins, with their dodgy hammies. Had only both started 4 times this season, largely explains why we were in a hole.

Good to have Ayew back, maligned by others but Palace fans see his worth.

Be nice to knock off BHA on the weekend.

I see your point and you don’t have to agree with mine, but I’m talking about one club here. Fair enough that you won’t fully understand it when it’s not your club either, but it’s actually ridiculous with the amount of things that have gone against us.

Usually things even out over the course of seasons, sometimes you get the rub of the green and sometimes you don’t. When it’s only one way though, that’s the problem I have with the current game.

His first example was perhaps the worst ever use of VAR and it was against his club.

The Reddit video with a rear view was clearer, though it seems to have disappeared.

It doesn't matter whether it was deliberate or that his arm moved towards the ball. He made his body unnaturally bigger and as the law says, by having his hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of his hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised.

That's all debatable but one of the main tenets of handball is movement towards the ball. That appears definitely not to be the case here. Where do you suppose his arm goes when he was running towards the goal? His arm isn't raised either. This really is a 50/50 call that could've gone either way. Not appropriate for VAR for me.

Doubt Brighton give the slightest *. He's debuted 26 players or something and probably added hundreds of millions of value to the club
You don't think Brighton care that they've won 3 of 13?

As long as they perform well in the Europa League and don't get into a relegation battle I reckon they're not too concerned.

They'll just keep their conveyer belt of talent going and continue to operate prudently while meeting all FFP regulations with ease.

he's not even blocking a shot he was running towards the line to try and clear the ball which has deflected off something, people don't run with their arms by their side. Players do that now when trying to block a shot etc but this isn't a case of someone trying to block a shot, it's someone running to a location.

there is an obsession in football now of ball hitting hand = penalties. anytime the ball deflects unpredictably no one could reasonably be expected to anticipate that, it's just the ball deflecting onto someones hand.

all this controversy, all the time...

I reckon they've got a bit more about them than that.

funniest one was the one Barca didn't get given that they were having a tantrum about on the weekend.
as close to 0% of a penalty as you could possibly get (for handball) yet the referee was still called over to the video monitor to look at it. probably one of the worst uses of VAR ever. the fact someone upstairs thought the referee needed to take a look at it defies belief.

Can't be as bad as that disallowed goal against Real when the RM player got a hand to the face after being shrugged off in the centre circle surely.....

That's all reasonable but it's not what the law says.

You've made that up.

lol

Ifab handball law says otherwise

It is an offence if a player:

  • deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball
  • touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised
  • scores in the opponents’ goal:
    • directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper
    • immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental

As long as they perform well in the Europa League and don't get into a relegation battle I reckon they're not too concerned.

Especially as a huge selling club. They must have made over 100 million profit last window and De Zerbi has debuted a bunch more kids who could go for big money aswell. I'd say as long as they aren't in relegation trouble and they are playing plenty of kids they'd be absolutely wrapped

For my club that one. We won because VAR had a brainfart with Liverpool's "offside" goal.

But I can reel off one's we've been screwed by VAR with as well.

Dier jumping for a header raises arms (as you do when jumping). Andy Carroll a foot behind him heads the ball into his arm while facing the opposite direction from extremely close proximity. VAR Handball.

Every club cops them and every club gets away with things.

Jesus be more arse hurt mate
The rugby board isn't too far away. Someone might mention a referee on that and you can have your meltdowns there.

Ah woops sorry, had it back to front. :tearsofjoy:

How often do we see deliberate handball? Nearly every time it's accidental. So the 2nd clause in the law nearly always applies, just like with this example.

All the time.

There's a big difference between a player being struck on the arm without any movement towards the ball and a player moving sideways toward the ball being struck on the arm.

The latter is much more likely to be penalised as handball.

Also think of a defender trying to control a ball on his chest but inadvertently striking the ball with his arm, even in a natural position.

That gets called as handball because it's a deliberate movement towards the ball.

Seen the handball decision now. Seen them given, and for many the most frustrating thing about the referees at the moment is the inconsistency from game to game.

I wonder if the deflection off the post was considered the same as a deflection of a body, defenders do get a bit more leeway there.would imagine this will be one for Howard Webb to chat about.
