Recommitted Esava Ratugolea [OOC 2023] - Ended up staying at Geelong

Huh?

Can’t really play the ‘simple trade’ card when he’s contracted and is the only depth in a position.
Being contracted doesn't change the fact he has not shown much at all in 6 years and barely plays. Cats digging in their heels over him makes zero sense.

Makes all the sense in the world. Moved him to defence where he showed promise and played R23. Is the only KPD depth on the list.

I think there's still a decent chance geelong refuses to trade him given he is contracted, we rate him highly and we have very little depth in key positions. Our preference is clearly to keep him but he's exploring his options. I suspect if he is desperate to leave we'll let him go but we're trying to convince him to stay.

We need a future second, so we're much more likely to trade e.g. Sav + 38 for a F2 or something like that.

Agreed. Its basically the equivalent of trading sav for very little but it helps us get other deals done so we will do it.
Might need a 3rd club involved though as port wont/cant pay future 2nd.

We can't trade our future second whether we wanted to or not. Future first will go as part of the JHF deal, and AFL rules say you can't trade both.

Either Geelong will agree to take a late pick for him or it won't get done, Port just have too many other higher priorities to have much left to give for Esava. But to be frank, given the absolute gifts that will be going to Geelong from elsewhere this trade period, helping a fringe player get to his club of choice on the cheap feels like the least they could do. Hell, you could give us Ratugolea for free and throw in pick 7 on top and you'd still be coming out of this trade period with a net win.

It might be with a third club involved
Ie port give later 2022 picks
Geelong give later 2022 picks and sav
3rd club gets those picks and gives a future 2nd

Theres no real point us accepting say 43 or 5e for sav unless those picks are going in our 3 player trades as we have no list spots to use another pick this year.

So it will be something creative like that or we will hold him imo.

Port give future 2nd and 43 for Ratugolea and 38.

Port give future first, 8, 33, 38 to Eagles for 2, future 2nd and Rioli

Wce arent getting enough there and im not sure port will trade the future 2nd as they need to trade future 1st for jhf.

Id happily give 38 48 55 58 and sav if it assists in shaking a future 2nd loose from somewhere.

So your cunning plan is GC give you their F2, you give us their F2 and we give you some extra stuff, then we give them their F2 back? Brilliant!

It's a very lopsided trade, but only because the Bowes and pick 7 deal is lopsided already.

I don't think Bonner to Gold Coast works. The only reason why Bonner would leave to go to Gold Coast is if they offered him a big contract, but the whole point behind trading out Bowes and pick 7 is for them to free up salary cap. Either you're asking Bonner to move cheaply which defeats the purpose for Bonner, or you're asking Gold Coast to use up a chunk of salary cap for Bonner which defeats the purpose for them.

Depends if Bonner is best 22 for them. They don't want to pay Bowes a stack of money to play reserves and would have some indication that Dew doesn't rate him.

Bowes is a much better player than Bonner, so I doubt it.

I think more accurately it is:

Geelong
In: Bowes + Pick 8
Out: Ratugolea + 38 + 900k of cap space (split over 2 years)

Bowes in an open market probably only gets 400k and not the 850k he's contracted for.

He has showed more than Luke Jackson ever has - facts!
