They gifted you a free kick (Hibberd sliding in and taking the legs out) when you shouldn't of got it 15 metres out from goal, that would of been a certain goal to North. There were also countless tackles made in the first half where your players did not dispose of it correctly yet it was not penalised at all so I wouldn't be complaining about the umps if I were you.
this on it's own is not a free kick so

The report that North player got was totally bonkers though.

Just because the best teams didnt beat us by 10 goals doesn't mean we were despatched easily by them. We never looked like beating a lot of the best teams even though they didnt smash us.
We led Geelong and Hawthorn inside 2 minutes and stayed with Swans deep into the last....are we agreeing? I don't actually understand your post.

For whatever reason, I'm not as irked as I should be. I think I'm more disappointed about losing the chance to get up people's noses rather than the loss to NM in and of itself. The positives:

  • It's actually something to build on, a stark contrast to the unqualified routs of '09 and '11.
  • JD. The kid can play the game of football.
  • Season review can just be that game. We managed to fit everything that we can offer into one game of football, both ends of the spectrum. It's a terrific case study. Most importantly, it's a great lesson that you can lose and win a final in exactly the same fashion you would a normal match.
  • We're ditching the coach.

Are you saying the coaches want him to butcher the ball when going forward and play from behind his opponent when playing as a forward?

If so you've changed my mind, bomber needs to go

i wish I knew how to tag people. Ben the Gooner would love this straw man argument.

Why not reference those exact same scenarios that happened in reverse?

Pumped up by wins v Carlton who were outside the 8 prior to our removal from finals. Take them out and it's one win difference...how do you reconcile the vastly better performance this year against the best teams with the idea of regression?

I'm saying it's been a very strange year and I don't know what to make of it btw, not that we have had a great year.

Vastly better performance?

3-7 against the rest of the top 8.

Three four-quarter performances for the year, two of which were before the middle of April.

4 losses and a draw from 9 (I'm fairly sure) 30+ point leads.

Two further losses from leads deep in red time. Not counting 30+ games where this was also the case, such as Melbourne.

4 (!) wins by 20+ points. All year. One in the last twelve games.

That's regression.

We can expect better for several reasons:
1. We did better last year (more wins, better %)
2. Gleeson, Ashby, Daniher, Z Merrett, J Merrett, Fantasia will all be better for their experience this year
3. The only players we may possibly lose in the off-season are Winders and maybe Ryder
4. Tbell will hopefully have a better pre-season and get back to his best
5. We are unlikely to lose our captain for half the season again next year
6. BJ and Chappy look like they can give one more year, same with Winders
7. Hird is a better coach (like seriously.. yes he is)
8. Myers, Zaka and Heppell all look set to explode into true A-graders
9. Hurley will return to the forward line.. and/or play a floating role with Carlisle
10. Carlise will get back to form playing in the backline and go back to being near AA or maybe even AA
11. One way or the other.. we will be finished with the ASADA stuff
12. The media scrutiny has to be less at some point..

So next year is going to be special imho.

Point 2 is a massive plus in my opinion. Bomber spent a yea building sustainability into the side. He obviously believes the list we have is going places. I was bewildered about selecting Steinberg. Now all's said and done I'm glad he's had the experience. ...and Gleeson and Merrett and Daniher and Heppell and Myers and Baguley and so on and so on.

Re: point 3. With any luck tonight will have been enough to convince him to stay.

Change of heart?

The free to Brown against Steinberg was utter rubbish.

Other than that, I didn't think the umpiring was that bad.

Hirdy did manage to bring mental toughness to the side. The footballing maturity (skills, procedures, etc) has increased under Thompson but mental toughness massively decreased. After seeing a complete year of each, we looked more dangerous when under Hird.

Surely footballing maturity is not giving up 30+ point leads and dispatching teams which are significantly worse.

We need to learn to stem opposition run ons. We had no answer tonight too many loose Nth players in the middle.

Didn't seem to be many moves made quick enough.

There's only one game you can judge this group on and thats tonight, and there was plenty to take from tonight, we were 5 goals up on a more developed side, and you can guarantee that there is a lot of Essendon players who have tripled if not quadrupled their drive to be successful in their careers tonight.
I'm not really sure I'd call North a more developed side at all, they're probably at about the exact same stage of their development as we are. At some point, there's only so many times you can see them fall short before you have to sit and ask yourself if they're actually good enough. All I've heard for the past month is how getting kicked out of the finals last year drove them to achieve success this year. Tonight was their chance of redemption, and what did we get? Seeing them shit the bed in the second half against a team that I don't actually think is that good. Again, at some point, the jump to the next level has to come, and if after 4-5 years it still hasn't, then it may not ever come, because they probably just aren't quite good enough.

**** me I hate doing this but "the worst"? come on. Winderlich and Ryder are two, who on output, passion and quality would rank below Stants tonight.

David Myers.

We took you at 6.

Dangerfield went at 10.
Cyril went at 12.
Harry Taylor at 17.
Callan Ward at 19.

If we can trade Ryder to GWS with this bloke to get a gun forward then so be it ...

costly turnovers and hand balling instead of KICKING THE BLOODY BALL is were we lost it tonight. 7.2 Goals for turnovers, shocking.

Pretty disappointing end really. All year we've struggled to put together four quarters, given up leads and gotten away with it sometimes, but never learnt.

A couple of things;
- Steinberg did a reasonable job in a lot of contests, was up against it a lot of the time because of the height difference and the quality of delivery. Tried hard, won a lot of contests too.
- Joey was sensational. Love that his first bag of four comes in a final. What a ******* gun.
- Defense unit was poor in their disposal for a pretty big portion tonight.
- Trav Colyer is ridiculously important to our scoring chains.
- Don't be sad guys. Buckets is back next week!

You're very funny.
