Beat Collingwood, Freo, Carlton x2, Richmond and Port from that finals series. 6-5 v top 8.

This year beat North, Richmond and Port. 3-6 + a loss in the final.

Easier draw, worse record.
Pumped up by wins v Carlton who were outside the 8 prior to our removal from finals. Take them out and it's one win difference...how do you reconcile the vastly better performance this year against the best teams with the idea of regression?

I'm saying it's been a very strange year and I don't know what to make of it btw, not that we have had a great year.

I know we are all emotional but lay off Stanton. He plays his role well and was far from the worst tonight.
Comfortably the worst, IMO.

I'm a fan of his, but he was a liability tonight.

Any bomber fan that isn't gutted right now.. needs to address why not.

You get 33 points up in an EF half way through the 3 quarter and then lose the game.. it means something has gone seriously wrong.

It wouldn't be such a surprise except that it has happened repeatedly all season...
You just answered why I'm not gutted, tonight was just a repeat of most of the year. No surprises for me, pretty much an expected roll over. Or maybe one too many Bundys.

Nah...
We are and have been mental pygmies for a while. It was always going to bite us on the bum when playing decent teams.
Not a complete waste of a season though, but not far off....f'kn north.

We were anything but mentally weak in 2013. The regression is staggering and frankly embarrassing.

Pretty disappointing end really. All year we've struggled to put together four quarters, given up leads and gotten away with it sometimes, but never learnt.

A couple of things;
- Steinberg did a reasonable job in a lot of contests, was up against it a lot of the time because of the height difference and the quality of delivery. Tried hard, won a lot of contests too.
- Joey was sensational. Love that his first bag of four comes in a final. What a ****ing gun.
- Defense unit was poor in their disposal for a pretty big portion tonight.
- Trav Colyer is ridiculously important to our scoring chains.
- Don't be sad guys. Buckets is back next week!

Umm.. for a start we moved a guy that we had spent four years grooming to be our CHF into the backline.. and we changed our game style from an attacking, explosive 'slingshot' style through the middle.. into a slow, sideways and turnover prone snooze fest styel.

We also thought that to cover our weakness up forward, it would be a good idea to take two of our prime midfielders (Watson and Goddard) and play them for large periods of the game in the goal square. Which worked for about 1 game out of every 5. Watson spent at least 30% of the game playing as a true forward.. and everytime North started getting clearances and created run off HB because, being honest, Watson is too slow to chase out of the backline.

We also thought it would be a great idea to start our attacking HB player as the sub, and thus take our best small forward (Winderlich) and play him as a HB.. which didn't work well either.

You simply must, if you have time, watch our play from last year up until the shit hit the fan around Round 18.. those first 18 rounds are some of the best footy you will see us play in 10 years.. nothing like the slop we have produced for 80% of this season.
You romanticise last year, we were despatched with ease by the best teams. This has been strange year, progress in some areas but not others.

I vehemently disagree with you on Carlisle.

Hirdy did manage to bring mental toughness to the side. The footballing maturity (skills, procedures, etc) has increased under Thompson but mental toughness massively decreased. After seeing a complete year of each, we looked more dangerous when under Hird.

IMO there were several games we lost this year that we would have won last year.

ANZAC day, Geelong game, round 23, Stkilda and melbourne games. tonight.

EDIT: i put them all down to Hird getting the players up more than Bomber.
Yup, agreed. All mental. Which, really, is a good thing because I think the talent is there - the mentality is not. We can fix the mental side, you can't magically create talent.

Just because the best teams didnt beat us by 10 goals doesn't mean we were despatched easily by them. We never looked like beating a lot of the best teams even though they didnt smash us.

I've seen enough from this playing group to suggest that they probably aren't ever going to win a premiership, or even come all that close quite frankly. Honestly, I'd be happy if they happen to just win a final one day...

Missed Dempseys run off half back. By the time he came on nth had the run on and never got into the game.

Had no one who could break the lines

I'm gutted but not the slightest bit surprised. Bipolar- we are the epitome of it.

Something seriously needs addressing in terms of their mental application, for you don't give up that many big leads that often without something not being seriously wrong.

Dempsey as sub was a mistake.

Heppell, Hurley and Baguley- you three deserve medals.

I think Steinberg was great in one on ones, and that free to Brown at the start of the fourth was utter horseshit. Bit he did get burned on the lead too often.

Stants was awful.

Oh well, bring on the cricket. Watching India get belted 4-0 again should be fun.

Yeah umps were shit but we cost ourselves the game

They gifted you a free kick (Hibberd sliding in and taking the legs out) when you shouldn't of got it 15 metres out from goal, that would of been a certain goal to North. There were also countless tackles made in the first half where your players did not dispose of it correctly yet it was not penalised at all so I wouldn't be complaining about the umps if I were you.

There's only one game you can judge this group on and thats tonight, and there was plenty to take from tonight, we were 5 goals up on a more developed side, and you can guarantee that there is a lot of Essendon players who have tripled if not quadrupled their drive to be successful in their careers tonight.

thanks for telling us

Next year we could do with some consistency. Surprise is good when you have the absolute talent, but when you're not quite there yet consistency and each man knowing his role is more important. I'm referrring to match day roles, team selection and sub selection.

**** me I hate doing this but "the worst"? come on. Winderlich and Ryder are two, who on output, passion and quality would rank below Stants tonight.
