Something went awry this year but can't figure it out....have to remember that draw last year was very soft....only team we beat of any note was Freo early and weren't even close to good teams. Far more competitive against good teams this year...but this inconsistency was always there....maybe it's not Bomber, I suspect we have some players too fragile for the best teams and biggest stages.

Beat Collingwood, Freo, Carlton x2, Richmond and Port from that finals series. 6-5 v top 8.

This year beat North, Richmond and Port. 3-6 + a loss in the final.

Easier draw, worse record.

Unfortunately we blew it at selection with Gleeson starting and Dempsey on the pine and when in a winning position didn't react quick enough in the box either.
Anyway big effort again from the boys this year under massive pressure.

Based purely on observation, I reckon Hirdy has a better ability to build a more personal relationship with the players which wins him enormous respect. I think Bomber is a bit tougher and demands they earn their salaries by teaching what he knows is effective. Everyone will have their own opinions I suppose; mine, in an ideal world we would retain them both like we had done for the previous 2 years otherwise, Bomber.

not all steinberg's fault we lost the game, 190cm third tall playing on a 200cm ruckman, move should of been made earlier to put Hurley on him, heppell was a star again tonight, as was bags. solid from hooker except a few joe the gooses late, chapman's clearly a big game player, was up and about early. joe was pretty good playing one out for most of the night.

i hope the feeling of this loss lingers well on into preseason and then throughout all of next year, i hope it burns in there guts and drives them, because reality is, is this is a game we should of won, i hope when it comes to round one next year they have trained as well as is humanly possibly and have left nothing in the tank over summer. as much as i'm disappointed i certanily hope this fires them up for a good year next year.

Not sure if it's natural progression or the game style that M.Thompson has/had us playing. I am a massive Hirdy fan but I really want bomber to coach this team to glory.

I actually reckon bomber thompson did well with you guys, good coach, would not mind him at the PIes if he leaves as an assistant coach, and if bucks fails next season, well, you know.

Umm.. for a start we moved a guy that we had spent four years grooming to be our CHF into the backline.. and we changed our game style from an attacking, explosive 'slingshot' style through the middle.. into a slow, sideways and turnover prone snooze fest styel.

We also thought that to cover our weakness up forward, it would be a good idea to take two of our prime midfielders (Watson and Goddard) and play them for large periods of the game in the goal square. Which worked for about 1 game out of every 5. Watson spent at least 30% of the game playing as a true forward.. and everytime North started getting clearances and created run off HB because, being honest, Watson is too slow to chase out of the backline.

We also thought it would be a great idea to start our attacking HB player as the sub, and thus take our best small forward (Winderlich) and play him as a HB.. which didn't work well either.

You simply must, if you have time, watch our play from last year up until the shit hit the fan around Round 18.. those first 18 rounds are some of the best footy you will see us play in 10 years.. nothing like the slop we have produced for 80% of this season.

Jesus Hird Christ. This thread has jumped the shark. Blame the third gamer Steinberg. Blame the guy who does exactly what he is told to do each and every of the last 200 games he has played. blame the AA full back who may have has his hands full tonight. We had a crack and came up short and are better for the finals experience. Get behind us for next year. Don't ******* turn now you gooses.

I will sum Stants night up with one piece of play, he was in a race for the ball against one North player but instead of charging the ball he appeared to slow and try and bump the North player when if he had just attacked the ball he may well have had an open goal.

I would have shifted Stants down back in the second half just too add a bit of experience.

All up I suspect the emotion here is more frustration than anything else.

It wasnt that. They just turned the ball over. It's real hard to do a 180 and effectively defend when the ball is already 50 meters the other way
