so far this year with all our new recruits and some young stars we have been able to put a lot of pace into our team...
with Alwyn Davey, Leroy Jetta, Andrew Lovett and Jason Winderlich...

surely we are one of the fastest teams now..........and on top of them... stanton is pretty fast to

any thoughts

Throw in a fit Nash, Dyson and Dempsey and it can only get faster. We need to be careful that we don't overload the team with runners though. Guys like Hislop, Lonergan along with the incumbents like watson JJ etc will be important to give the side some balance.

We all saw what a stroing bodied team like adelaide did to the Dogs, pace is a weapon but it isnt everything.

Good point marcuz! Hopefully Nash gets over his injury soon!

unfortunately nashy would still be miles off senior footy

he is still training with the modified group
he hasn't played a praccy game all summer
he would be nowhere near match fit
he would need at least 5 or 6 games with bendigo once he has overcome his injury
if we don't have too many injuries he may find it hard to make it into the side anyway

We should have Winders and Lovett as our pace in the middle. Davey playing maybe on the flank as a sort of link up role. That way he can still use his pace to attack but still applies defensive pressure on the opposition when they're trying to get the ball into their forward line. Jetta mainly as a crumber in the forward 50 with stints in the middle when Winders or Lovett are off the ground. JJ, McVeigh and Watson in the middle as the grunt while Lovett and Winders can be hanging off the pack ready (as the situation dictates) for a handball and then use their pace to burn off the opposition.

It's amazing to think that most on BF thought we were slow until the media wrote an article on how 'fast' Essendon were. They'll swallow anything the media throws at them.

Having a quick side doesn't mean having 5 quick players. The dogies are a quick side, they have about 15 quick players. 5 quick players means we have 5 quick players. nothing more.

we move the footy quickly now. very different from last year, and with players on the improve i'd disagree with ur statement. i think we are a quick side... not as quick as the doggies, but certainly we move the footy quickly

Being a fast team isn't just about leg speed. It is also about ball movement, disposal and decision making. We have improved a lot with leg speed - Davey, Jetta, Winderlich, Lovett - but generally our decision making has been better and we are hitting more targets. In 2000 we weren't the quickest side around but our movement of the ball was so quick and clean that it didn't matter. Still - loved seeing Lovett run through the middle a couple of times on Sunday!

What amazes me most isn't our increase in leg speed, but the pressure Davey, Jetta and Lovett have been putting on the opposition defence in our F50 when they've got the ball. Our tacking has been superb thus far and has resulted in turnovers and then goals. Classic example was when McVeigh ran down Hedland (i think it was him anyway), grabbed the ball and kicked a goal soon after.

With the improvement in the fitness and game of Winderlich, it allows us to utilise his pace in the midfield. Throw in Lovett and Jetta on the ball every now and then and we immediately have speed in our midfield and can apply pressure to the ball carrier. We've had less I50's both games which indicates even though we've had an injection of pace into the midfiled, we've still gotta win the ball and get it to our forwards. But so far yes it has been exciting to watch and hopefully there's plenty more pace to come:D

I wouldn't say we were one of the fastest sides now...more like we have just caught up to the rest of the other "quick"teams and our team looks sharper than last season....Cole surprised me today at training with his pace..

do u think it would be safe to safe our midfield structure is quicker than it has been in past, bar mayb hille, but we did hav somerville n alessio? haha

the biggest difference in our midfield isn't the improved speed, but better decision making and we are using the ball much better

obviously a bit of speed helps
