Essendon vow enough is enough

So many teams who didn't play finals in 2023 are saying they will make finals this season. I'm wondering who is falling out to make way for them all? Or has the final 8 been quietly expanded by the AFL?

So many fans and observers saying this team and that team has improved over summer, but can someone give me a list of 2023 finalists that have become worse over the off season, other than the Dees:rolleyes:

Collingwood are shit. Gimp flag.

Would have said Blues but they have had a fair bit of luck with injury this year, losing Silvagni for the season.

I've been hearing Crows going backwards, won't get another year like that out of Latex Walker at his age.

In all seriousness, a lot of teams around a similar level, or 2 levels. Anyone bar North, Eagles, Hawks and Cats and Pies can make finals imo.

But the 2 biggest improvers should be Richmond. And Richmond seconds. :)

Richmond seconds ??? Isn’t that just Richmond these days?

They will miss finals again.

The problem is they keep finishing middle of the table neither making finals or getting good picks. They even just got a mediocre coach.

I tip we will see 10,000 days without a finals win come.

Another side that I have in that 6-14 range in the ladder. Wouldn't surprise me if they win a final this season. I think it depends on whether they can win enough games while their acquisitions gel. If they're in striking distance of the 8 once that happens, I can see them going on a run. 2025 I think they start climbing the ladder in a meaningful way.

I think we get enough top end picks.

For mine our single biggest failing for a long time has been player development. The talent comes in the door and goes nowhere.

A new coach every couple of years doesn’t help.

I've foolishly been somewhat bullish about Essendon for a few years. Think they've severely underperformed.

So whilst a part of me says 'put up or shut up', there is also a part of me that still believes they can do something.

Not expecting miracles but there's a log-jam of teams vying to fill the spots in the bottom half of the 8 and Essendon are part of that group.

It won't surprise me in the slightest to see them play finals. Hell, they may even win a final at long last. Don't think they go any deeper than that though.

And given the evenness of the competition, just as it wouldn't surprise me to see them make the 8, it also wouldn't completely surprise should they finish 12th-14th. It's just a really even league especially around that area of the ladder, and it doesn't take a lot for things to go wrong.

Is it a development issue or an issue with your draft guru's talent identification skills? I'm leaning towards the latter.

He might not have done a great job but Dodoro is just a convenient scapegoat for the failures of an entire organisation.

If he was simply walked out the door with no other changes, I doubt things would've gone too differently.

I mean in the space of 16 years since Sheedy left we've had senior coaches Knights, Hird, Thompson, Hird, Worsfold, Worsfold / Rutten, Rutten and Scott. 8 changes in 16 years. No club can have success with that kind of ridiculous instability. Any player developing to their potential in that environment is simply a miracle.

Speaking of Sheedy, he was sacked in 2007 because was well past it, rightly... in 2022 he's a jabbering 74yo board member who is casting the deciding vote on whether we sack our coach or not. And he voted to sack him because he was laughably conned into thinking that it'd be his mate Hird who would get the job again.

The club's a joke and will remain that way until the old boys are purged. Any success we have in the interim will be due to luck.

I'd be thrilled if Dodoro was our only problem.

Fair points. Harder to develop young players with constant coaching regime changes.

Still I think you've had access to a lot of top end draft picks and I'd expect a few more guns to have come through other than just Merrett, regardless of development issues.

They had a good hand in the 2020 National Draft with 3 first round picks 8,9,10 for Cox, Perkins and Reid.
They look ok as a group but seem to have plateaued last season.

Bombers, suns and crows all n the 8 … sorry Blues
Traditionally, one team from outside the 8 makes the top 4 the following year (in the AFL era at least).
Essendon are not my first choice to do this in 2024.

lol

they say this same crap every year

"we've had enough of being shit"

followed by being completely shit all year.

the only other certain in life apart from Death and taxes is that Essendon continually tell us how over being shit they are, and yet still lose games.

Uhh Essendon make finals pretty often.
2009, 2011, 2013 (but kicked out), 2014, 2017, 2019, 2021. Were sitting 9th by percentage in 2023 heading into round 23 (GWS were 10th).

The issue is finishing 7th or 8th and being uncompetitive in the EF.
