Saturday 29th of August 1987
Four games on at same time.
3-35 pm that Saturday it is half time at the four venues in Victoria.
Down in Geelong the scoreboard is showing :
Geelong 6,12 (48)
Hawthorn 6.6 (42)
At Waverley Park the scoreboard is showing:
North Melbourne 8.4 (52)
Carlton 5.6 (36)
at Princes Park the scoreboard is showing:
Fitzroy 12.6 (78)
Sydney 10.10 (70)
at Western Oval in Footscray the scoreboard is showing:
Footscray 6.4 (40)
Melbourne 5.4 (34)
All four games have the scores of other games on scoreboard at ground and all four games on the radio live to tune into and find scores at other grounds.
The finals system is the final five which means if you finish on top of ladder you get the best advantage of first week off of finals and when you play in week two you are playing to win straight through to the grand final and if you lose you get another chance in preliminary final the following week. It is a massive prize to finish top and freshen up your players whilst 2nd and 3rd play a Qualifying Final to try to meet you in week two. Carlton down by 16 points to North at half time means if Hawks can beat Cats the Hawks get top spot. Meanwhile a North win and Sydney losing means North on a live ladder sit in 3rd spot on ladder and earn a double chance. Fourth spot is a spot in Elimination Final so the jump from 4th to 3rd is massive if you can do it. Swans 8 points down to Fitzroy means North are super excited to presently be beating top side on ladder and become a real premiership chance. But if Swans comeback against Lions in second half that all important last double chance for 3rd spot becomes theirs so North fans got eyes glued to that game scores coming through on scoreboard, just as Hawks fans got eyes glued to Carlton v North hoping Roos hold the lead and if Roos do hold on then a Hawks win over Cats in second half will give Hawks top spot on ladder and week one of finals off. Massive!!!
Meanwhile the fight for the final spot in top five is down to Geelong, Footscray and Melbourne. Cats hold it at present and if win at home v Hawks sew that spot up as they hold a major percentage difference over Dogs just behind and a live ladder at half time would have both on 12 wins and a draw but Cats over 4% up on Dogs so Dogs best hope is for reigning premiers Hawks to beat Cats. Menawhile Melbourne that are down at half time by a goal, have not played finals for 23 seasons and favourite player Robert Flower is retiring and been a favourite of every fan that goes for Dees and even other fans of other clubs. He is more popular than a Robert Murphy was for Dogs or Kade Simpson for Blues or Roughy for Hawks. The fairytale of Melbourne making finals for first time in 23 years for Robbie in his final year is as good as it gets in final home and away round. Although on live ladder Demons are two spots from 5th place on ladder, it is only a goal to difference at both the grounds they are fixated on. They just need to overun Dogs and hope Hawks beat Cats and Robert Flower is going to play in finals for first time in his career... It is all happening at same time.... Seven sets of fans with still premiership dream alive following four games at same time where crucial spots for finals are being decided and can shift from moment to moment.
What are you doing at this moment if you are a footy fan and alive ?
Had a look at youtube to see if any old VCR recordings people might have uploaded from back then...
