God these cup comps are boring now. It's always the same teams at the pointy end.

Why haven’t you included your own club? You know, the FA Cup winners from 3 years ago.

The FA Cup has been won by one of City/Liverpool/United/Arsenal/Chelsea 20 out of the last 23 cups (Portsmouth/Wigan/Leicester the outliers).

The League Cup has been won by one of City/Liverpool/United/Arsenal/Chelsea 19 out of the last 25 cups (Leicester/Blackburn/Middlesbrough/Spurs/Birmingham/Swansea the outliers there). The big 5 have won the last 11 League Cups in a row.

I understand why/how it happens but the magic of the cups feel long gone. It's just another comp for the big clubs to dominate.

That’s all well and good but you should probably drop Wolves from the list. :p

The magic has never been about winning it?

Literally this season Maidstone knocked out Ipswich as a massive result that will give them life long memories.

Perhaps not for the non league clubs but the days of a Portsmouth/Wigan winning it are long gone.

The League Cup is even worse.

Long gone? If those days were more frequent they'd be less special but plenty of smaller clubs go on runs to the semi or final. As rpcb said, bit odd to include Wolves.

How would they be less special? That makes no sense. For the supporters of the clubs involved, it wouldn't be any less special at all.

It would be a bit odd to have included Wolves... if they weren't part of my tips for the next round.

I would love to see the club's qualified for European comps excluded from the league cup. Here's why:

  1. It gives other teams a shot at winning, which could make the cup more engaging.
  2. The FA Cup would become even more special because it's the only knockout competition with all clubs involved.
  3. It might make the big clubs happy since they often complain about playing too many matches.

5 clubs have well over 90% of the 3 domestic English trophies since the EPL's inception. The other big 5 leagues would probably have less clubs dominating a similar percentage of silverware.

Certainly is harder to maintain emotional investment in the code as a result, knowing results are predetermined somewhay.

Yep, big time. The gulf is getting larger all the time as well.

Throw in that most games are played at 2am over here and it's pretty easy to lose enthusiasm for what was once a great love of mine.

Disagree.

We are down to 8 and there are still two Championship sides in it - both with some chance to progress. And of the 8 teams left only two are fighting for other honours.

There is every chance this is a very low priority for Liverpool and City and the whole thing opens up for the rest.
