Fall and Fall of Big Bash

hmmn…. Checks footy team you follow…. Guess 27k would seem Huuuuuuugggggeee (in best Darrel Eastlake voice).
As much as people hate to admit it, without the Big Bash, cricket in this country would be on its deathbed. The Tests pull in a few but only really against England and India, the average ODI doesn’t pull in crowds. Cricket isn’t what it was in the 80s and without BBL, the Aus Open might be the nation’s premier sporting event.

Test series v Pakistan drew plenty outside Perth…

You still peddling this bullshit? On a per capita basis, the crowds were about the same. And not spectacular, just solid.
The Melbourne Test also has its traditional marquee day, which does tend to blur the picture regarding overall match attendance.

Yet here we are peddling 20,000 BBL crowds as carrying cricket in Australia and 30-40,000 crowds as a failure and proof test cricket is struggling…

The BBL could only dream of a crowd like Boxing Day as they destroyed their product when they sent Gayle packing and no longer attracted crowd favourites.

Sending Gayle away was the smartest decision they ever made

Gayle v Pietersen drew 80,000 to the MCG, now they get 25,000, great decision.
Gayle sexually harassed someone live on TV. I don't know how you can construe him never coming back because of that as anything but smart.

I don’t think we should be comparing BBL crowds to Test, one’s our International side, and the other is our Domestic players with a couple of imports.

A better comparison would be compared to Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup.

T20 is certainly on the rise, I understand people don’t like that, but it is what it is.

The BBL isn’t really a threat to Test Cricket, but the IPL is, especially if the Saudis get really involved.

? The AFL is the only other league in Australia where crowds of 25,000+ are commonplace.

The way I see it, BBL has ostensibly replaced the ODI's and T20I.
There is next to zero interest in meaningless pointless bilateral series of white ball cricket.
What I think will happen next is that CA sees that the BBL product isn't as hot as it once; they can't get the big international names so their only other option is to shut down international cricket so that Marsh, Khawaja, Smith, Head, Cummins, Lyon, Starc, etc can play in it.

What about scheduling?
They could start the tournament straight after the Sydney test but then they have the problem of finishing in February and school holidays being over....

I like the way it is now - starting in December and sprinkled throughout the summer.

A competition that relies on stars is not sustainable. And i don't think there's anyone in cricket right now who has that star power that some seem to think the BBL needs. The SA20's overseas players include the likes of Reece Topley and Naveen ul Haq, for instance. If we can get 25,000 to the MCG for Tom Rogers vs Tom Rogers, that's nothing to be sneezed at.

If we are going to get these bumper crowds the haters are demanding, they are only going to be for certain select games like a final, or maybe if sides can create a one of event against each other each year (something like Scorchers v X on Boxing Day for example)

Outside of AFL, no one else is regularly pulling 80k crowds.
Look at things like Tennis, Horse Racing etc, big event crowds then nothing.

Consistent over 25k BBL crowds puts the BBL head and shoulders above other Australian domestic sports.

Last 3 matches have been decided in the final over, including a final baller. BBL is on fire this season.
And people are loving it.
Obviously I enjoy Test Cricket like us all, but the diversity in the crowds. So many woman going nuts and so many kids all dressed up is really striking compared to a Test crowd.

Even more striking compared ro the old Tri Series International ODIs, which was pretty much a yob convention.

That’s 20,000 a night over the course of a month. Outside days 1 and 2 in the biggest cities, Test cricket isn’t even drawing that. Then you have the fact Perth and Adelaide have drawn over 40,000.

But I see you are part of the ‘everything I don’t like is woke’ and ‘go woke, go broke’ crowd given you think Chris Gayle has any relevance to this discussion.

We don’t need to push our political agendas. I don’t agree with any of his views (and he’s clearly a troll), but he’s owned you unfortunately going by that comment.

Are you Alistair Dobson?

When the tri-series was still in operation (late 90s-early 2000s), I worked in hospitality at the WACA. I remember vividly being told in our briefing that they did more booze sales on the day of the ODI involving Australia than they did in the rest of the year put together.

Another thing that's going to make a mockery of the tournament is all the guys who will be skpping the finals for the ILT20
Laurie Evans
Chris Lynn
Colin Munro
Jamie Overton
James Vince

Each of these guys leaves a massive hole to be filled.
It's just silly.
Players have short stints in the County Championship before and after playing in other competitions and I've never heard anyone say it makes a mockery of that.

Why do people who don’t care for the BBL, care about it so much.

De Kock made absolutely no noticeable difference to crowd or viewing numbers and really how many better T20 batters are there in the World now than him?

Australians wouldn't know a star cricketer if it was playing a World Cup right in front of them.

Perhaps if he gave the crowds a reason to come watch, but he was just another dud international practicing for his main tournament.
