Make It Rain Money GIF by yvngswag
That's kind the point, you need to throw $$$$ at these players to keep them here. CA match these other leagues.
The more money you can pay these players, the better quality internationals you get, and the more likely you are to retain the Australian internationals before they go play elsewhere for more money

The reality is the quality of fast bowling in the BBL is extremely high, miles ahead of any other competition in the world (including the IPL, where the effectiveness of pace is reduced by low-bouncing pitches), and subsequently it can be a bit of a nightmare league for softkocks and old-timers who aren't really interested in having 145km/h whizzing past their nose.

Pietersen, Gayle, Sangakkara etc were the players that loser teams went after. It's been shown time and time again you can't buy a Big Bash trophy, unlike the other T20 leagues which would be nothing without their Test stars and overseas players.

Nowhere else in the world are there players like BBL stalwarts Maxwell, Neser, S Marsh (the list goes on) not getting to 50+ career Tests. That's just the depth of Australian cricket for ya, which is why we win world championships so often, and why the BBL can live without the likes of Cummins and Starc (even though it would be nice to have them involved).

I don't watch much BBL so I would be interested to hear who the bowlers are that are bowling 145kph short balls?

Usama Mir was pretty handy this season for the Stars 5/113 from 17 overs.
And today against the Kiwis he got tore a new one 0/51 from 4

That's part of the problem with the BBL - the standard is so low that you can't read too much from someone who does well.

We've seen this repeatedly with Australia where solid BBL players (Ashton Turner, Darcy Short, Josh Philippe, Matthew Short, Aaron Hardie, Ben Dwarshuis, etc) have been extremely average on the international stage.

you could go the other way.

Every single Hurricane import has been crap(outside one big example). Showcases the standard might be alright.

Or is the cane train is just crap. It has to be one of those reasons and I like to believe is the former rather than the later one.

Geez, but stiff on Hardie, who has played precisely one ODI and six T20s. Matt Short two and seven. Hell, Ashton Turner’s only played nine ODIs for an average of 32 at a SR of 120, which ain’t half bad for a late order bat.

You could make a case for the gap between Shield and Test Cricket over the years as well. Same with Distrcit Cricket to Shield.

Given the first thing in the half-baked OP is a criticism of crowds, it's worth reiterating last night was another record:

That's all well and good, but, you know, a Pakistani leg spinner making his T20I debut in New Zealand didn't take a wicket, so...

For starters I'm not sure you can compare any Cricket match played in Australia with a match played at Eden Park (maybe if he played on North Sydney Oval we could compare).

And by this logic the Big Bash is better than the World Cup as Quinton de Kock averaged 59 at the WC and only 17 in the BBL. You could find dozens of examples of guys performing well below their BBL performance in other comps and same the other way. I can't really recall AB de Villiers or Kumar Sangakarra dominating the comp.

must admit, this PR move was genius. An absolute classic from yesteryear.

Got media coverage, had the build up and made the Sydney Smash seem important. Top marks all round

I'd heard earlier in the week that the SCG Trust had approved the chopper landing next door at the SFS, and thought at the time it was such a lost opportunity.

It was hokey AF, but I thought it was fun.

And why was this crowd bigger last night?
Because Warner and Smith were the drawcard and main attraction.
Warner and Smith played in the recent Test at Perth Stadium. They also played in the most recent ODI at the MCG. Crowds for both matches were well below what those venues draw for BBL games during the school holidays.

While top players help draw a crowd, the extent is hard to quantify. What last night really emphasised is the insanity of your "play the BBL in October" idea.

Different tournaments, so different standards. And in the BBL, you get the see the Warner v Smith matchup, rather than Warner and Smith verse matchup.

Please do quantify it for me, otherwise tell us why the numbers where higher than usual. It's okay to see the large crowd number, but you also need to understand the reason for the numbers

To play in October would give international players the opportunity to play the full season of the Big Bash, as I saw from last night, two big names drew the crowd.

See how the crowds show up when Smith and Warner play, maybe there's something in that

God they were a shitty crowd though. Paper planes have become the universal sign for "I'm a theatre-goer and I'm bored." Our version of the Mexican wave.

I was embarrassed to be part of a "paper plane crowd" when Real played City at the G and CR7 was subbed off - last night was the same thing when Smith got out, they were only there for him and Warner.

I'm not sure you'd be pointing to last night as a banner night for the league, cos it wasn't particularly reflective of what the BBL is.

The crowd for the first Sydney Smash this season was also a record. Not just for BBL at the venue, but for any competition/sport.

That game featured neither Warner nor Smith. But it was played during the summer school holidays.

What garbage crowds these are. I’m talking about the amount of people who turn up when the big guys play not the calibre of people who turn up.
