Fall and Fall of Big Bash

I will say at the match last night the Scorchers are playing up the Wild Wild West theme this year which got old very quickly (announcers with terrible cowboy accents, teams coming out of the tunnel through a saloon door). Even the kids were getting sick of it.
Told my son it was old after 30 seconds. Just stick with the Furnace theme.

People seemed to like the lookalike schtick, though.

The Scorchers have lost a heap of players to other sides simply because they could not get a game.
Some move for money but not that often.

If you restricted players playing for their home state, there would be a lot of excellent players not getting a game.
In some ways I don't think there is enough movement. It's felt like for a decade now Perth have kept the same very successful pace attack.

I just don't understand why all these other teams just sit back and never try to poach these guys. Year after year its the same.

Why are these clubs not trying to weaken their rivals.

They're all West Aussies who are probably reluctant to move unless they get a huge offer that would tank that club's salary cap. The Sixers also built their attack off local NSW talent.

No different to the huge number of Victorian AFL players and coaches who would never move outside that state.

Bancroft was poached for more money.

The locals are well paid so the only ones that move are the ones not getting regular games.

It’s the advantage afforded to the single side states, they just build it into their state contracts. Plus Langer built them into a cult like group.

It’s why the only players who leave are usually outside the state side and go for money, but always play their worst games against Perth.

so we need to merge them and have one super stinky mega garbage team?
The Victorian state team was a powerhouse short format team prior to the formation of the bbl. The early year Stars teams were quality that had the mcg rocking allbeit finals chokers, the Renegades even won one.

The problem is garbage recruitment, the Stars are on the verge of losing to a Brisbane reserves team. Sure you can have a bad season or 2 but this has dragged out for far too long.

Credit to the vic cricket public, 17,000 turned up tonight to watch a team that they knew would not be competitive. A good Stars outfit could be getting 40-50k.

Maybe because the novelty is wearing off?
T20 cricket is 20 years old. There have been 17 IPLs, we're on the 14th BBL (plus a couple of other tournaments prior to that), 9 T20 World Cups, etc, etc.

It's not a novelty and hasn't been since about 2006.

T20 is just another format of cricket, and is by far the most popular format in the world, and is the best means of ensuring cricket grows around the world, particularly in new markets, which actually gives the sport the best chance of competing in a global marketplace. And sure, it offends the sensibilities of a handful of boomers, but they were probably crapping on about "pyjama cricket" in the 80, too.

The case study of Melbourne and the BBL is fascinating.

80,000 showing up for Stars vs Renegades back in 2016 at the MCG
The corresponding fixture last year had 27,000

That's a pretty big drop off.
Is it purely just the drop in international talent (Gayle/Pietersen in 2016) and the decline in performance from both teams?

It would be great for the comp if they were better and got bigger crowds but I don't see the issue here at all. They are fitzroy and St Kilda the two Melbourne teams.
The Scorchers and the Sixers are the blockbuster teams and have been since the BBL started.
Why is this a problem?

Should not start till Boxing Day when schools have finished and more people on holidays. As mentioned before I am not a great fan of T20 but nothing on TV to watch and watched a bit of Konstas batting the other night and Harper last night.

Big Bash is a religion for me. I’ve travelled down from Sydney to Geelong tonight for the Renegades and Hobart. Cricket Australia doing the best they can with the hands behind their back. It doesn’t help when you have 3 concurrent leagues about to overlap with the BBL as well. Eg ILT20, SA20 and Super Smash going on at the same time.

we kinda gotta discount covid numbers.

haven't looked that closely, but are the numbers down when england and india are here for a test summer ? and is it possible, test cricket is still king (and rightly so).

If a product is good the crowds will go. Doesn't need to be school holidays. IPL runs through school time. Full house every game.

Triple the salary cap and you will get better players coming.

Money is a big factor for players. From memory the IPL owned SA20 and ILT20 are owned by IPL owners.

A distinct window also doesn’t really solve the problem.

I struggle to think how BBL teams expand their salary caps given how much money is already paid. Thought a $3,000,000 salary cap to squeeze 18 players who play around 10 games of cricket a season was plenty . Someone like Stoinis who hugely underperformed and didn’t care last season, performed 1 decent game out of. 10. He knows the IPL is where he makes his hay.

Whilst it may not have the tv and crowd performances in Australia I’m pretty confident it’s the 2nd most watched T20 league globally. (Maybe 3rd at worst) . Maybe I was wrong.

The problem is the teams pay for players to come here to get them near the top of the ladder but then don't have them for the finals. It's a bit of a joke to be honest.

Shorten the season and have each side play 2-3 times per week. All over in a month and then all players can play the whole tournament.
