Toast Farewell Joel Selwood, champion of the game and legend of the Geelong Football Club

No it's not the place for your BS, when the thread is a toast and a farewell to a champion of the game. There are numerous other threads to discuss him negatively, this is not the place for it. I know you think your opinion is always warranted and correct, but there is no need for it in this thread. If you're going to slander him on his day of retirement, then get lost.
some people just like going into a crowded room of other people having fun and farting. [sigh]

Joel is an ornament to the game, and it took me a long time but I am finally beginning to understand how he helped shape Geelong's current culture. :thumbsu:

When I was at the 2006 GF parade we were heading home after it had ended and we popped into this quiet Cafe to grab a water and there was a family sitting in the corner having lunch.

It was the Selwoods.

Adam was there in his Eagles tracksuit and I saw a very young Joel and as we were leaving I said to my cousin "Oh that's that Joel Selwood guy... he's meant to be bloody good"

And he was.

All the best in retirement Joel Selwood.

Is the 2006 the worst top 10 draft in the history of AFL? 2 massive wins in Selwood and Boak, 1 average pick in Gibbs and 7 epic fails.

1.Gibbs
2.Gumbleton
3. L.Hansen
4. Leuenberger
5. T.Boak
6. M.Thorp
7. Selwood
8. Ben Reid
9. Armitage
10. Nathan Brown

I am happy for him
He made the call before his body lets him down, or his form drops. Like both Tom Harley and Cameron Ling before him, he leaves on top as a premiership captain, respected by all for what they delivered

Everybody has to retire eventually, and I always prefer people to retire that little bit early, than wait until they're cactus and realise they've gone one year too many. This is NOT sad news in any way IMO, despite some of the commentary about supporters 'dreading' it
Four flags spread over a 16 year career is about as good as you can get. Not many others can equal that

At least he had a career to celebrate, and success that went with it. Maintained a high standard throughout his career. Leaves behind a great legacy

Thank **** we didn’t draft Oakley Nicholls before him.
The question now is does he stay in the game and if so at Geelong or does he go to another club?
Could see him ending up as a club ceo to senior coach, will be interesting to see what he does next.

Ben Reid was a premiership all Australian and 150 games.
Leunberger was a top ruckman riddled with injuries 150 games.
Lachie Hansen 150 games.
Gibbs 260 games and a best and fairest.
Nathan Brown 183 games premiership player.

Not horrible.

Armitage played 169 games as well. Really only Mitch Thorp that was a bust from that draft

Over the journey I have hated (in a sporting sense) Selwood at levels that are not healthy.

And the main reason if I am honest is that is how good he is.

The way he has carried himself last Saturday, today, over his whole career is exemplary. Selwood is a star and will be missed.

To my fellow Hawks supporters - I promise to never speak this highly of him again.

A quick Wikipedia search suggests your post is an epic fail...

Nathan Brown played 183 games.
Leuenberger played 137
Lachie Hansen played 151
Armitage played 169
Bed Reid played 152 and was AA

Yeah, they were never top players, but given the average length of career, they were solid enough. They aren't the 'epic fails' you suggest

Gumbleton and Thorp are the only ones that didn't make it
Everybody else played over 100 games and most played over 150

Look over the history of top 10s, and it's a decent list

Armitage still had 13 seasons of getting paid like a footballer. That’s a big win for mine.

Spent a long time not much of a fan of his, but how can you hate a bloke who's last act as a footballer was to get the club's long term waterboy with Down's Syndrome over the fence and into the celebrations of the players? That and the way he treated the Auskick kid who gave him his medal, taking Levi Ablett through the banner; all on his last game he thought about others.

Champion footballer, even better bloke.

What a beauty. Always had him and Pendles as greats in the same way. Never the very best in the comp but the 1st picked. Out and out champ, maybe just nudged ahead of Pendles this week but reckon they finish level pegging. Loved watching him play always.

It's not BS. Many neutrals feel the same. This isn't Geelong's board. I'm not even slandering him. I said he was a great player, you're just focused on the negatives because you're highly defensive of players from your own team.
