So is it official that we have the worse nga region in the afl? I remember a lot of people were pretty pissed at what we were given in the distribution, looks like it’s slim pickings!

The irony was that there were 4 players drafted from Richmond's NGA the year before it started.
pick 12 Jy Simpkin
pick 43 Esava Ratugolea
pick 50 Kyle Kirby
rookie pick Jamiane Jones

Now that its only for players pick 40 and beyond, they're pretty irrelevant.

AFLW team going to be awesome with the next generation of tiger cubs

Soccer is where its at!!!
It's great for soccer and the Matilda's at the moment, but it will be a distant memory in a few months...

What the media forget to mention is, the novelty factor. I don't really like soccer as a sport, never watch it, until the world cup comes around. I watch it, support the Aussies (same goes for the women's world cup), but it doesn't convert me to Soccer, I happily go without watching another game until the next WC.

It’s not about us older blokes, we are essentially a lost cause

It’s about the kids, soccer is absolutely dominating footy in schoolyards and local level with most clubs fielding multiple teams at every age category in boys and girls

I agree with you but would also say that soccer has done that for years and never been able to capitalise on it. World Cups are not an existential threat to AFL, soccer getting their house in order at the top definitely could be but again I wouldn't hold your breath on that

It’s more about the trend it’s not something that’s just going to happen but more of a shift that is occurring year over year

Not saying that footy is going to just fall over either it will have its place but over the next 10 - 15 years slowly but surely it won’t be footy or rugby dominating the big screens at pubs depending on the state or footy the only game on at prime time free to air

The change will be forced by the growing number of kids playing soccer and abandoning AFL...

The exact same thing happens with girls when the AFLW started... girls numbers exploded at local footy.
Now all leagues can think of is, how do we bring girls back to footy, the numbers are dropping off significantly (and this is well before the Matilda's).

All these things are just a sugar hit, with immediate impact, but nothing long lasting.

The novelty wears off at some time or another.

Put it this way, if the WWC was played in Europe, and games were on at 3 in the morning, would there still be the following, and the (sad) answer is no.

No the drop off in AFLW numbers can be put down to the 'physicality' of the sport and its impact on female anatomy...soccer is more appealing...by comparison to AFLW its not as physical...
And another advantage that the Matilda's have with soccer...is its played on a world stage which has to be appealing for our multi cultural population...not just played on local football grounds like the G.
Every so called 'sugar hit' of alternate televised sport is a nail in the coffin of both the men's and women's AFL...

Soccer has already had an extreme advantage when it comes to amounts of kids playing the game and nothing has come of it. If that was something that was likely to happen then soccer should have caught up to the AFL years ago

The reality is the older kids gets the more prohibitively expensive it gets to play soccer which means generally only the very best kids keep it up. The others just want to play with their mates and that means they tend to shift over to AFL which is way, way better priced to play

The AFL sees the junior competition as something to nuture as a base of future fans. Soccer sees the junior competition as easy cash for them to take advantage of and then generally waste with poor management

That's actually just wrong, girls aren't leaving the sport because of the physicality at all...

The reality as to why any sport will always struggle with young female participation, is simply down to WHY the girls play the game. And the answer is for the social interaction.

Yes there will always be the elite young women in sport, and yes there are more pathways for them, whatever the sport, but for the average girl, she plays because her friends do. When one or two of the friends drop off, the rest of the group drop off.

Footy/Soccer/Netball whatever is an avenue for social interaction for most girls, rather than the competitive nature of the sport.

Concussion and law suits will ultimately destroy the AFL and it’s basically because they have treated players at any level like shit . Rarely do ex players, who should be their greatest promoters , speak highly of the AFL .

Yes the girls are...it just makes absolute sense in this day and age of violent physicality...why even bother with or play AFLW, RLW, RUW...Boxing...
You may not value a functioning body untouched by the sceptre of repeat concussions...bone breaks...muscle dislocations...disfigurement...but I would guess many men and women are worried by such physical disfigurement and are seeking a safer sport like soccer to play...not just simply and solely for only the social interactions! Their are various reasons to play sport...but not suffer physically for it! The tide will turn against AFL in both men and women's take up...
Soccer is the future...

Apart from there being no tackling, how is soccer a safer sport...

Just as likely to do a knee, bigger risk than AFL with stud contact to feet/ankles/legs.

Still plenty of stray elbows thrown around.

Soccer has a bigger/longer/more storied history than footy, the basic fundamentals of the game haven't changed, so if oyu think it is safer now, you would have always thought it was safer than a 'contact' sport.

It's just never happened here in Australia, it's had A LOT of opportunity to become the biggest sport in the country (also helped by the fact AFL is 3 main states and Rugby in 2 main states) but has never overtaken them.
