This would the same dissent that tried to overthrow him using armed force - him being the democratically elected leader of his country? That's called treason and would be punished harshly in ANY country.

So Chavez should have been shot for his effort in staging a coup then?

Why is Chavez having to suck up to foreign oil co's again?

How utterly predictable.

As far as I remember, Chavez was sentenced to jail for his role in the coup.

Agreed on the predictability of his now looking stupid. It was always going to happen.

which one of these guys were history's greatest monsters?
Adolf Hitler followed by Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse Tung are the worst dictators in history. Kim Jong Il is the worst dictator that is still in power, and he is doing a great job of replicating the atrocities of Kim Il Sung.

Pol Pot was pretty damn bad, I'd say worse than Hitler.
The Killing Fields. Yes Pol Pot was bad because as leader of the Khmer Rouge he was responsible for the deaths of probably 2 million people which was nearly 33% of Cambodia's population. He also killed half of the Chinese living in Cambodia (210,000) as well as all doctors, former government officials, teachers, police officers, monks, and lawyers of the 'pre-year zero ethnic cleansing society.' Hitler was responsible for the deaths of around 46 million Europeans, although it's hard to compare these monsters.

Has to be this man for his role in Hot Shots: Part Deux

Well in that 46 million you're including people who died at war.

In Pol Pot's it was largely just straight up mass murder rather than a conflict - from memory he got given a blood nose by the Vietnamese army at one point? But really he pretty much wiped out an entire generation of his own people.

Considering how the war began, and the objective of the Third Reich, then I think it's fair to blame Hitler for that total. The 6 million people that were killed during the Holocaust was pretty significant as well, and surely that would be considered mass murder.

As I said, it's very hard to compare these monsters, although it seems that they both committed suicide. In actual numbers of people killed and exterminated though, then Hitler was worse. Interestingly, the leaders of the Khmer Rouge are now on trial in Phnom Penh...

Alleged Khmer Rouge Torturer Goes On Trial

NPR.org, February 17, 2009 · The ex-commandant of a Khmer Rouge prison faced a special U.N. tribunal in the Cambodian capital on Tuesday for crimes against humanity committed during the genocidal regime that ended three decades ago. Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, did not address the court as his lawyers haggled over procedural matters. Duch was chief of the infamous S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, where as many as 16,000 men, women and children were executed or died after maltreatment at the hands of their captors. Cont...

strange how people forget that the ussr lost 20 million people in the war, but got rid of a comparatively large amount before it with purges, gulags and salt mines.
Hitler gets the goods as "favourite" dictator
However, Uncle Joe should move up higher than he is at the moment - paranoia, mass murder, deportations, etc etc etc.

I didn't know that - how many were killed just prior to the USSR entering the war?

I still think Pol Pot is the worst.

So a horrid man who is a complete and utter socialist-statist that has no concern for freedom or individual rights is a hero? Suppose you like Che Guevara too?
Yeah.

I'm with you as well mate.

I absolutely hate anyone who tries to get people out of poverty.

Scum of the earth.

You're defending the US' actions in South America?

Actually, I never said a thing about the US.

I'm talking about a guy who wants to impose complete state control, and no, not because of any foreign country, Chavez has made it well known he wants to impose state control and he holds it as a virtue. It is immoral.

Alexander the Great- Just as bad as the others, except he conquered basically the entire world and is still feared by some Persians as the devil Iskander, more than two thousand years after his death.
Also had the greatest PR of any dictator

About 90% of the Roman emperors were screwed in the head. Tiberius, Nero etc.
I think Domitian even put a tax on urine
Hell even Augustus Caesar rose to power by war and murdering all of his opponents
