Ok guys. I mentioned earlier that I was travelling to Chicago. Done that. Cool city. Mighty cold though...

Anyways, I was in Chicago for business, now that thats out of the way I decided to take a week or two off to see other parts of the country.

Currently I'm in San Diego and love it so much. What a sexy, cool city this place is. Seriously chilled back and great night life in downtown

May stay here for a few days, also want to do a trip down Mexico.

But after that... where should I go???

Couple of things I'm thinking:

(a) Rent a car and drive back north to Chicago, visiting cities along the way - my return flight is from chicago so my trip has to end there anyways
(b) Fly to NY, spend a few days there then back to Chicago
(c) Stay in Cali, see san fran etc
(d) Go to the other side and see Miami

any tips??

this is my first time in the states so really dont have much clue whats good

The first time that I had gone to Santa Monica was after I had checked in to a flight awaiting a stop over in LAX heading back to Australia. I asked a couple of the airport workers where to go to eat, relax, etc. and they all advised me to head down to Santa Monica. If that was the same for you then it must be their standard answer (it's very easy to get to).

I went down there and loved it. The next time I was in LA I spent my week there and fell in love with the place. Perfect 9 to 5 sort of area with some places open for a few hours afterward - cinemas, restaurants, cafes, etc. It's the home of my favorite sports bar (if it's still open) where I watched most of the 2006 March Madness tournament - great food, vibrant crowd, etc.

Of course, the boardwalk is the highlight when it's a nice day for it. A true MUST SEE in Los Angeles.

Thorougly agree. I fell in love with Santa Monica pretty much as soon as I stepped off the bus on Ocean Ave. Its so much better than downtown LA and Hollywood. Its a pity they dont have a metro line going out there, because it is a real bitch to get to if you dont have a car. I caught the bus down Sunset Blvd from Hollywood, and it took on average between 75-90 mins for the relatively short distance.

Getting a pair of skates and rollerblading down the boardwalk is a must do. Head all the way down to Venice, or go the other way up towards Malibu. :thumbsu:

6. Chicago, Illinois --- Another good Mid-American city. Brilliantly put together city. I'd have loved it if their favorite sports star wasn't such a scum bag but that's not the city's fault. Great sports, top class culture and tremendous business center.
Interested to hear why (assuming we're talking about MJ)

Montreal and Quebec City are amazing. History and entertainment (and parlez vous Francais?)
NYC has something for everyone.
Austin, Texas- Country folk, live music, weather, sport
New Orleans- Swamp gators, French Quarter, gumbo, Bourbon St parties

Aside from the cities I love Monument Valley, Carlsbad Caverns, Zion, Grand Canyon-but that's another thread.

Vegas for me was a hole (free booze and shows were good)

In no particular order my favourite North American cities/areas are....

- Orange County, CA. I have stayed in and around Anaheim so many times it is like a 2nd home to me. Favourite haunts: Angels Stadium, Disneyland, Main Place in Santa Ana, Brea Mall, South Coast Plaza, Newport Beach, and Knotts Berry Farm.

- San Diego, CA. Didn't mind when the Padres played at Jack Murphy, but love Petco Park. Perfect weather, great beaches, laid back lifestyle and good nightlife.

- Orlando, FLA. Great central location to explore Florida, especially during baseball spring training. Plenty to do exploring all the theme parks too.

- Boston, MA. From Fenway Park to Harvard and MIT to the Freedom Trail, Beantown is a great place to visit (and study).

- Chicago, IL. Wrigleyville, the South Side, Navy Pier, Sears Tower, Madhouse on Madison.

- New York, NY. Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Gardens, Times Square, the skyscrapers. Iconic loacation that exceeds expectations.

- Other cities I liked and would visit again: Toronto, St Louis, Dallas/Arlington, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Honolulu/Waikiki, Las Vegas, Kansas City.

Cities that I wasn't so keen on: Miami (seriously overrated), LA (downtown - beach areas are ok), parts of San Francisco (Tenderloin district - saw 2 muggings in 2 days last time I was there), Detroit.

San Francisco and area - drum circles in Golden Gate Park, Haight/Ashbury: anything crazy/new age/tattoo, Muir Woods, Sausalito and Tiburon: great view of Downtown San Francisco; Chinatown/Pier 39 for great food. Berkeley Campus is nice, Stanford campus as well. And the San Jose and Palo Alto area.

Chicago - love this city. The L, the Signature Room on the 95th of John Hancock centre, Lakeshore Drive, ethnic neighborhoods. A deep dish pizza should be on the menu.

Phoenix - I think it has its appeal. I like the art walk in Scottsdale and Mill Ave in Tempe. One has to find the oases here. Apart from those, it is actually a pretty bland city, no doubt about it.
