Oh god! Yes please!!!
Good in the box on game day and tactically not so good on development. What stage are we at and where do we need the most help?

I don't see it as clear cut as you do and remember how much better North looked this year. Port certainly didn't jump with him onboard. Excellent reputation as a tactician but how much is that reputation justified? FWIW it might be completely justified I really don't know.

Unfortunately, regarding Laidley, I can't see past his mealy- mouthed whingy whiney voice..always seemed down in the dumps..not a upbeat positive attitude..

He could be the best assist. coach going around, but there you have it..a totally unrealistic reason for him not to be at our club..

Its strange really, how we judge people, right or wrong..

I see Ayres as a pretty boy.......never did like them;)

IIRC, the article in the CM today mentioned that Voss and Bowers would choose who will fill the vacant assitant's role (be it a Williams, Ayers, Laidley...that we know of), while Bowers and the Board would decide on who the new Football Manager would be.

Either way, it is pleasing that we will be obtaining two more astute football people that will only benefit Voss and the club as a whole.:thumbsu:

Spot on Dylan12, i also noticed this article today. Though Laidley was interesting, and perhaps could be a good fit being on the tactical side. Also saw the comment that Bowers and the board will be picking the GM role, where as Voss will be picking his assistant coaches.

I think it's important for us to get a good mix in the coaches box. We will have 5 full time assistants, each needs to be there bringing something to the group. If we feel we have enough in the way of development, then going someone like Laidley for his game day and tactical side wouldn't be a bad idea. To me, even though we are a side in a rebuilding phase, there is no point in stacking the box with good development assistant coaches. You need that mix, and i think whoever lands this last spot, might not be the best coach as such, but just the best fit with our current group of coaches.

A Bombers captain (1996-97) a little more than a decade ago, O'Donnell is back on the radar for a return to Brisbane as an assistant to head coach Michael Voss.

O’Donnell appears more likely to head back to Brisbane where he was an assistant for five years as a vital tactical and midfield specialist assistant at Brisbane under AFL icon Leigh Matthews.

Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres was recently interviewed for a mentoring role at the Brisbane Lions and could be on the move. Ayres recently signed a two-year deal to stay at the Borough but has a clause in his contract to leave if a desired AFL position comes up.

Don't we have a Senior Assistant position and a Football Manager type position open? If one of them (Choco or Laidley) was willing to be Senior Assistant, couldn't we have our cake and eat it too? :thumbsu:

Personally I would like to see GOD as the GM Football Operations he would bring a wealth of experience, be a good mentor to Voss and without being one bit threatening. Not sure if this leaves one or two positions to fill Senior match day assistant and/or a reserves coach.

For mine the senior match day assistant needs tactical nouse, and if Laidely's rep is correct then appoint him, just dont put him in front of a camera he is not a good marketing tool for the club.

Reserves coach needs to be development focused, lossing Mcrae was a bummer he did a brilliant job in the time he was here (judging by the performances of the young guys when they came in). Not sure Williams would be comfortable in such a low profile role on that basis I wouldn't appoint him.

Really pleased with this appointment. He was a great assistant to Lethal and also had the opportunity to work for a few years under Sheeds before the Knights debacle. Will not destabilze the coaching team because he is not looking for a Head Coach role. Most importantly he seems the right cultural fit for the Lions...certainly better than Choco or Ayres. Best of all we are not taking on someone who is an unknown in terms of interpersonal dynamics. Vossy is getting the right types around him and I am delighted with the Review to this point in time. Now to the business of getting a top notch GM!

Stoked with this appointment.

Welcome back Gary!

:D

So it's just the General Manager of Football and reserves coach roles to be appointed now and the whole picture is complete.
By my calculations we have the reserves coach position to be filled and the Leadership and Development Coaching role that was vacated by Manny Lynch remaining. I am hoping we go experienced with the reserves coach and a youngish ex-player with the other.

Who do you have sitting in the new General Football Manager position at the moment? Wasn't aware that had been filled...

I was looking at the coaching area only. As far as I am aware there are still another half dozen positions (ie a game analysis role and in the S&C team and the medical teams) needing to be filled in the Football Dept itself including the general manager role.

Oh sweet :thumbsu:

Was just making sure I hadn't missed something. So much news going on and a bunch of people around here, including myself, finding it hard to attach rumoured names to rumoured positions that I thought I might have missed something. ;)

Courier Mail

Johnson said the club had finalised the shortlist for the vacant general manager of football role.

Interviews will be conducted in the next week and the panel of Johnson, Wright and board member Graeme Downie will make a recommendation for the role.

I don't think i'm sure of the difference between 'cleanout' and 'exodus' anymore?
A "cleanout" is what happens before a successful period, an "exodus" comes before a period of failure.

We'll find out in a year or so which one we've just had.

Well said. I was going to post something similar - an "exodus" is what you have when three players leave and a handful of staff are let go (us this year), a "clean out" is what you have when 14 players leave and the majority of staff are let go, including the head coach (Richmond last year).

In other words, it depends on the narrative the media is pushing for the club in question at a given period of time. It may be retroactively revised at a later date with no acknowledgement of such having happened, depending on the results of said exodus/clean out.
