THE family of a 26-year-old suburban footballer injured in a marking contest have decided to turn off life support.

Balwyn Tigers defender Shaun Bergin, who was once a Hawthorn rookie, was knocked unconscious in the final quarter of the Eastern League's qualifying final against Blackburn on September 4.

He was placed in an induced coma in The Alfred hospital, where a spokesman said he remained in a critical condition last night.

I always feel something physical when reading news like this. A very sad and unfortunate event. Condolences to his family and friends.

Hopefully the man who went for a spoil doesn't blame himself for this. Something not of malice, it seems.

really feel sorry for the guy, used to play juniors against him and he was a good player, used to have to tag him :/

Likewise, always had to make sure he couldn't swing onto that beautiful left foot of his! Horrible news, thoughts go out to his wife and family.

Such a wonderful bloke, always up for a chat and so genuine!

Sad, tragic news. A similar incident occurred here in WA last week, but in a bump. Condolences to both families.

What type of hit was it?

Blokes gonna feel pretty shit for the rest of his life, even if it was an accident.

All the best to his family.

Original Herald-Sun report on the incident suggests that Bergin was collected in the head in a marking contest and was out cold when he hit the ground.

From another forum, I understand that the ground is very hard, probably because it's used to host Premier League cricket in the summer.

RIP Shaun and condolences to his family and friends.

Was at the match and have followed the news closely since, so very sad for all involved.

Very sad news indeed. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. There has seemed to be quite a few football related deaths of recent times. Its sad people are losing there lives just by playing the game they love.
