Given his history of building lists, how he ever got that moniker is beyond me.

When Terrys not available, theres always Chris (Yes I really did recruit buddy and rough/legend in his own mind) Pelchan

Didn't he call himself that. :$

It's starting to become annoying how much he's appearing now since he got booted from St Kilda, especially since no one in the media corrects the story about him nailing Hawthorn's 2004 draft.

I've never understood the hate for Gerard Healey and Dwayne Russell. They are both intelligent (compared to the vast majority of other football personalities), both unbiased (compared to the vast majority of other football personalities) and both good at their job. Dwayno's been calling the NBL games and doesn't miss a beat. They don't deserve the hate in my opinion.
During the finals series of 2013-14 Gerard did not once predict a Hawthorn win in any of the preceding finals or GF's in each premiership year. He was zero from 6 finals, and followed up with a similar strike rate in 2015.

So he's either dumb or biased, I'm not sure which.

After the 2015 GF, a bunch of us hawks fans went round to the fox OB and gave it to them, King and Healey, who were to the side of the podium, level with us.

We were probably obnoxious but obviously in good spirits. They took the ribbing with good grace. they weren't that upset

Pav was fantastic in the commentary box in the one JLT game I got to see. It was actually a breath of fresh air to hear someone that understood the Fremantle Football Club actually talking about it without either

a) sounding condescending (see Luke Darcy etc)
b) getting the names of players wrong (Derm)
c) pretending to be neutral but secretly loving us struggling (Brad Johnson)
d) letting their hate get in the way (Gerard Whateley aka Oxygen Thief)

More Pav, less crap.

I disliked Garry Lyon way before it was cool.

pre footy squadron days ? :D

Specifically in this case, that of Garry Lyon.

I'm not really interested in the drama that caused his sabbatical in the first place, but his return was heralded as some sort of massive homecoming for one of the best voices in football.

Hang on - when did that happen? At what point did Garry Lyon become some sort of ultimate football authority? His crowning achievement post a decent (if not great) playing career is hosting a show more about buffoonery and entertainment than footy.

He's just irritating all round, years and years ago (well in the 2000's) he was touted as the greatest football brain good enough to coach, he lived off of that reputation but never put his hat into the coaching ring (except for little league contests) thus the reputation was unwarranted and false.

And the cheating/betraying his best friend makes him even more of a dog of a person.

If you couldn't speak English and could only listen the tone and intonation of his voice you would swear that you were in the presence of greatness.

Best post I've read on BF in some time. Worthy of more than just a 'like'. Thanks for the laugh. :thumbsu:

I am not trying to cause a generational fight but there needs to be a big injection of young blood into the fourth estate
It's not generational - aside from recently retired players who get a gig because they're well known, there hasn't been anyone new commentate or offer special comments for at least a decade. The only new one I can think of is Hamish McLachlan whose brother is AFL CEO.

For commentary, McAvaney, Taylor, Hudson, Zempilas, Russell et al were in the media game 10 years ago (or more).

For special comments, Dermott has been retired for 25 years, Dunstall 20 years, Healy nearly 30.

I tuned into JLT this year and had to listen to J Brown, Dunstall and Russell riff on the same thing commentators have been saying for years. When do we get more insight?

er how much more insight can you get with a fixed method of kicks, handballs, marks, and whatever else... oh goals, and behinds.

bursting the bubble but entertaining calls are very limited and well it is repetitious.
The could go into a bit of detail about A1 A2 A3 and D1 D2 D3 and what players in those positions on the ground should be doing.

I've been lucky enough to go to a few sponsor days for the club and part of that is a few assistant coaches break down play for you and explain why the club is doing things and setting up the way that they do in certain situations and what they try to achieve by doing that. And I learnt more in those 15-20mins sessions than I have from years of watching broadcasts.

If the players who have recently retired passed on some insights like that it would educate the wider footballing public a lot more than all of Kingy's meaningless stats, Chief's dribble file and Johnno's/Derm's giggle fits.

Attack... Defence... running round in circles, loading up, hand balling in tight contests, leading to the west wing. hah, oh there is a plethora of glorious things
to talk about.

always teasing and loving it...

Alaistar Lynch is also one who needs a whack, he was so bland and dull I am wondering what the hell does he bring.

Totally agree. He's been doing 'special comments' for roughly a decade and not once can I recall him saying anything perceptive or insightful.

That's far worse imo than someone like Dermott who for his flaws and self-indulgence does on occasion have some interesting observations.

Such as? My eyes and ears work just fine. During a game, I'm not really interested in what some long retired ex-player thinks might be going on, I just want someone to call it simply and clearly. All the analysis etc I'm happy to sit and digest from a program sometime post game.

I did expand the message you've quoted. Might explain what I was getting at a bit better.

Basil is a product of commetti and endorsed by him too. The perfect example of a boys club leaving us with shit commentary. Noticed basil has taken over telethon and the olympics too. The prick is WA's version of eddie maguire.

The guy has held a consistent job at 7 Perth - On Air - for around 25 years.

That clearly counts for something.

I note with interest that the latest radio survey ratings are in, and they don't paint a pretty picture for SEN, and specifically, the much publicized return of Garry Lyon to broadcasting in their morning team.

I'm sure you can find a news service of your choice to give you the figures (SEN share dropped from 3.8 to 2.5) - but it got me thinking about the complete inability of the fourth estate to realise that what they say is a valid opinion, doesn't make it a valid opinion.

Specifically in this case, that of Garry Lyon.

And yet we're told by the greater rumblings of the industry that this is a voice to be listened to.

The problem as I see it though, is that your serious football fans tend to reject those that don't really deserve such accolades.

When Matthew Lloyd talks about a forwards craft, leading, goal kicking technique - I listen.

When Brian Lake talks about the subtleties of team defense, playing in front of an opponent - I listen.

When a man who never seemed to have the proverbial stones to coach himself attempts to analyse the errors made by actual coaches, well...

So my question I suppose is, why does the industry insist on pushing people who clearly don't have the support of the wider football public?

Craig Hutchison is one of the most thoroughly dislikable people in football, and yet is hosting The Footy Show.

Hamish McLachlan is, well Rompingwins.

Is it just a lack of talent in broadcasting today? Or are media outlets convinced they can simply push what they like under our noses?

As much as people deride Caro and Hutchy and the like, I always enjoy Footy Classified and a big part of that was Garry Lyon bullying his way around that studio. He also had some pretty interesting things to say, and was easily the most observant of all the commentators (apart from his unfair analysis of Naitanui :drunk:). The problem with SEN isn't Garry Lyon, it's the awkward and sycophantic nature of Rompingwins and that out-of-place Sam bloke. People want to hear combat, arguments and big bold opinions, not some circle-jerk and yes-men style radio.

It's what makes classified so interesting and (sometimes) fun to watch, even if the content can be bland af. The second you have a couple of hours of combative, bellicose radio people will tune-in in droves

nah just take it as something from a person who has had a bit of a break from the footy full on.

just waiting for the real season to begin and for myself it is all about logging into the games themselves and the commentators... potaters... are going to be
some kind of logical thing to understand the game. It is a thing where it is about those who know the game already who will put up with
the 'gummy bears'.... sticking to the rules.

what I say is never reality, and that is my point... like a commentator... not everyone will get it, not everyone will hang around for it, and not everyone
will want it... but it is a hospital bed. treat your audience as though they are not seeing or hearing or else one or two of the above.

observations are free and easy. :thumbsu:

Sounds exactly like Dermie.
He's been watered down big time in the last year or so but he's still the best.
When he first came onto the scene he was amazing

Sure if I had my way their would be different hosts to different shows but all this thread is is a big sook fest
People in here potting people left right and Centre based on their opinion

I like most of the MMM commentary, when JB Lyon Frawley and BT were together that was the best radio combo I had heard

Others would think that's shit and prefer ABC with Whatley and Co, which I think is boring as ****

I think Richo Matthews Macavaney and Ling on 7 are horrible and I'd rather listen to nothing
Channel 10 with Christensen Walls SOS and Hudson was awesome. Same again people might disagree
