Coaching Staff Former Coach Ben "Truck" Rutten - Sacked for real this time - 21/8

Round 1 was the first nail for me.

The s**t show of the rest of the year finished it off.

No discernable style. Weak selections.

You can't put out a team that does not compete and turns it's toes up. We did that at least half a dozen times
Spot on Kel.

I was criticised by a lot for being critical of Truck, and bringing up the prospect of him not going into his 4th year at the club (yep, 4th). Was never a fan of the whole succession debacle and was criticised for my foresight then. A coach on training wheels trying to teach a team on training wheels.

But in the end, it came to be as such.

Club had the balls to call it and I couldn't be more proud. Here's to no more acceptance of treading water based on faith. :thumbsu:

If a coach wants to take it on, they better be in the frame of mind that they must show signs visible to the eye (win or loss)!

Good luck to Ben as a person, I hope he does well in life, but he was not what we needed.

I don't disagree with you, however for mine the ends did not justify the means.

Struggle to remember a person in footy being treated worse for no apparent reason.

Undermined constantly by Brasher making stupid, irrational statements in the media about his own stupid expectations, a list manager at best not being on the same page as him and at worst actively working against him a ‘mentor’ that contributed nothing positive at all to give him at least a running start. Who knows how long the board were quietly plotting to get Clarko or Hird or whoever the **** else in the chair. Not to mention the playing group just flat out checking out on him.

A high quality person and another club will benefit greatly from picking him up. Hope he sings it from the rooftops to all prospective coaches out there, stay the **** away from Essendon, you are literally throwing your career down the toilet.

until after we show some consistent on-field performance

This is how it always should have been. You don't have to win to show a structure. I think that's something that eludes a lot of people.

The structure and correctly taught habits is what provides the players the plate - the players being helped by it to eventually execute it (win) is the food.

Our players were being stifled by learning bad habits and feeling helpless due to a lack of proper direction. You can have all the will to build a house - and learn to build a house - but if no one gives you the hammer, the nails, and the wood - you're shit out of luck.

We need a coach that releases the shackles from their hands - not someone who waits for the players to break them.

Was a ploy to extend the honeymoon period. All reports was he was in charge of the game-plan and behind the scenes - Woosh was in charge of media and game day. It doesn't make sense to let a man you considered not good enough to continue coaching while you have a successor. Let it go. He was here for 3. Unfortunately for him, the honeymoon ran out.

Wins are wins. But so are losses. Who's to say the loss tally wouldn't have gone up as a result of more games? Could have been even worse (think the laughing at HT against Geelong while being smashed).

23 Rounds are 23 rounds, wins are wins.

Stop trying to make excuses and divert. This was the whole problem with this entire Rutten saga - it was all stalling, diverting, making excuses. Was sick of it and I'm glad it's over.

Truck's gone, let it go.

And how does that all translate into Knights being more successful than Rutten?

Knights' first 3 years were better than 2020-2022 :$

And? Neither of those was really sack-the-coach territory for mine.

Knights probably had an unsustainable gameplan but everything coming out of Truck's mouth about the need to change the way we played rang true and I think he had a considerably worse list to work with than Knights did.

We've got a couple of years in the wilderness regardless but I think if he had another season to bring in the sorts of players capable of meeting the standards demanded by modern gameplans and removing those who didn't Rutten would have been successful. It's kinda moot now though.

Is it just me or does Sheedy seem immensely pissed off after that decision?

He looks happy actually.

And we all should be.

Truck gets 600k, can enjoy a whole year at the Bahamas. Will come out with loads of assistant offers and may one day coach when he actually has a better view on the game + the teachings of coaches elsewhere.

We get the breath of fresh air that we need, and the fire lit up under the playing group (long overdue). We're nicely placed to push for the the sky, and so is he. Win-win. Was meant to be.

I want to make it clear. I am not excusing Knights in the slightest. What I am saying is - if Knights was the glaringly obvious Knightmare, then we must come at similar scenarios with the same energy.

And here's another crazy thing - Knights' list was younger with less games played. I know, crazy right?

Time to move on.

Players been going over to Truck’s place to get around him

An 'offsite' board meeting lol

Or we could learn from the multitude of dumb things the club has done in the past and actually back in a coach for the long term.

My dude. Richmond, a club that very much have their shit together and do not tolerate mediocrity already want him back. Maybe they see something our rabble do not.

The only thing we're nicely placed for is top five draft picks for the next couple of years. We're also nicely placed to receive some late first rounders when our key midfielders put up their hands for a trade at the end of the year.

I don't think you truly understand how over the moon you should be right now. This is exactly what we needed and any coach worth their weight in gold would be salivating at the prospect of taking it over.

Well said.

Not the key midfielders! Oh no - who's going to refuse to run both ways now.

It’s a winning sport, Rutten might be a good bloke but our game plan or lack of exposed him as not a great coach. If there are players that are loyal to him and complain then that need to look at why we won 7 games. Move any players that don’t want to be there. Fantasia and Daniher have been no loss, things move quick in football.
