Yeah we've done OK recently for sure, especially on that one. But the Brodie deal and even the Brayshaw one got surpassed by the Pick 7 deal last year. Gold Coast filling up the podium for worst trades in the last decade I'd say.

Still doesn't change the fact we got hosed on the Acres deal though. Not anywhere near as bad but still a poor trade, Same with Logue/Tucker. Thought we did OK on Jackson, Lobb and JOM/Meek though.
The Omeara trade will look better when we see him playing in purple dominating.

We may have wanted Acres gone. He exceeded his ceiling for a purple patch early in 2022, but overall he was a bit of a liability with his rain makers. And if he were still with us today, he'd be holding up the development of younger potential wingmen. We seem to be spoilt for options in that position.

Personally I'm thrilled to hear that flipping Blake Acres is "driving" the system and "driving" standards at Carlton. What sort of state did they need to be in for Blacres to come in and be a cut above?

Anyone missing Acres needs to watch a few replys from last year.
Almost every time he took a mark forward of centre he would burn several leads only to kick a bomb to the goal square.
He was fantastic deep in defence and running hard to space. However he was part of our goal kicking issues last year.
Now for what's it's worth , my sister's 1/2 brother's dog has told me that Lobb, louge, Tucker and one player still at the club were making waves with the younger players. Lobb and Tucker were always going to be traded, they were hoping to keep Louge, but not at overs.
I wonder if this had anything to do with JL asking the team to pull together
(paraphrasing) towards the end of the season?

I doubt he tears up anything (feel free to insert dried twig calf jokes...). Last I saw of him at Melbourne his pace looked off and although he still had the skills and some moves, he's never been known for his killer-workrate and he still found a way to get sanctioned for a 'misdemeanor'. If it's true that Fyfe had raised eyebrows at the club bringing him in, I doubt someone like J-Lo would want to rock the harmony of the playing group with someone with behaviour-issues like Benell has been prone to have - and I say this as someone who was a MASSIVE fan! I LOVED the potential of Harley Bennell, he was an excitement machine that COULD have had an amazing career had both his body and his mind allowed it, but fate steered things in a different, less palatable direction. At 30 he's done at the major level, unless someone like a Geelong has a vacant spot and can see a little niche role for him - I can't see the point, the risk's too great and the modern footballer seemingly has moved away from what Bennell for all intents and purposes was; a wayward, but exciting talent. I fear that ship sailed a long time ago

Glad to hear that like me you're a massive fan, but I have to disagree with the bolded. Despite it being debunked often over the years, I still keep seeing posts on here that say that Bennell was not known for his work ethic. But that's wrong. Repeatedly he has been described by teammates as one of the hardest trainers they've played with. In fact it's likely that what ultimately destroyed his career was the incompetence of Gold Coast's medical staff that failed to pull him back at training and let him repetitively go too hard and re-injure himself.
Sure he was a wayward guy in his personal life and may not have been good overall for kulcha, but he was a work hard, party hard type, never lazy.

Beg to differ. No real true wingers. May have to develop or promote others from half back into the role.
Not in anyway confident Henry will replace a 70% Acres of 2022.
See what happens, but may have to concede the wing in order for youth to develop.

Speaking of Blacres exceeding his ceiling, what are the odds on one of his rain makers hitting the roof at Marvel stadium in 2023?

fair enough, I might have been a bit unfair there - last few times I watched him play at Melbourne he looked well behind the eightball; but I suppose he had lost a lot of confidence in his body at this point and the injury crisis he had endured probably got to him mentally....I do recall remarks about his hard training ethic. I am happy to concede when I'm wrong - I do however think his time has sadly passed. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I hope he doesn't make it if an opportunity arises, albeit I am skeptical we get to that point, but....who knows. We all love a good redemption story and with Harley he had so much talent and was fun to watch at his peak, those highlights of him ripping the Cats a new one for G/C were on a level comparable with George Best in English 'soccer'. He had that flair and excitement; we just never saw enough of it once he'd crossed to here, which is so sad.

I wish him the best as he tries his luck one more time, it's just a crying shame he wasn't able to defeat his mental and physical demons whilst a Docker.

On Acres going I really don't get why people on here seem to think that playing wing is some sort of super specialist thing that is somehow really difficult to get another footballer at the club to step up/into.
It's not an easy position to play. It requires a big tank, running patterns, contested ball winning, defensive pressure and decent foot skills amongst other things. Anyone can play wing as you say but playing a proper winger can make all the difference

As much as anything it’s ‘naturally’ plating the position. Most inside mids are used to going after the ball and get drawn in when they go to a wing - once you hesitate/go in … your toast on the outside (if you don’t win it).

The best wingers don’t hesitate, they have a feel for the position and know when it’s their turn to go. Then being able to execute puts you another step above.

Acres had the feel for the position … but his execution was poor. Henry (at this stage) is almost the other way … which is extremely dangerous and leaves the side vulnerable.
Can’t image Erasmus/Johnson will be that much better (never seen them play the wing, but by all reports are natural inside mids)

Some of the talk around here severely overrates the wing. I have never heard it said of a side: "they would have won multiple flags if they had just had a wing." I suspect it might have started with Keith Greig winning two Brownlows as a wingman!

Ed Langdon was a big part of the Dees winning theirs and a big part of why they took him.

Maybe but the filth wouldn't have won their first two flags if they didn't have Peter Matera. Probably ditto Essendon and Micky Long whenever they won their flag in the 90s. Isaac Smith? Maybe the Hawks and cats win their million flags without him, maybe not.
An elite wing makes a difference

Great interview with Dawson. He sounds like a great bloke & wonderful team man.
That’s Lyons real gift. To form solid bonds with players he sees something in that aren’t necessarily stars & get them to be vital cogs in a champion team. Going to be interesting to see if he’s still got it.

Excellent read.
I suppose being a saints podcast it didn't emphasise his time with us, but he was an obviously intelligent guy that Ross trusted to organise the defence.
That bit about leaving his man to rush to Ablett in the grand final was interesting, I remember his and Ross's first ever game for us against the cats when the game was in the balance and he rushed 30 metres off his man to smash a cats player at half forward that was going to win a clean ball in the open, it might have been Stokes, anyway it won us the game

For anyone wondering about Conor Blakely's pre-season;

That caption has to be the single lamest piece of media from an AFL club I've ever seen.

Our team should be running seminars for the other clubs to help them not do stuff like that.
