What a load of crap.

I remember channel 7 doing the draft back in 97 which was heaps better coverage than what we got in 2009. How pathetic.

Absolutely disgraceful. No help to the draft hopefuls who would've been watching from home, and a completely pointless watch for the rest of the demographic - footy diehards as someone else said. Fox Sports is such an outstanding network normally - sure their footy commentary team is ordinary without Clinton Grybas (greatest commentator ever imo, he made footy exciting, informative and gave it a touch of that "Hollywood polish" that you only normally hear in American sports calls) and it'd be nice if their news network wasn't based in rugby heartland, but they go out of their way to show things live and offer active features, and I'm sure they're going to make the 2012 Olympics absolutely brilliant to watch. But geez did they drop the ball with the draft.

When they came back from an ad break partially through the selection of picks 11-17 and started an interview I figured they were running overtime and trying to get through it. I waited....and waited....and they kept speaking. And then they introduce a new guest, might've been Gilbee, can't remember if it was him second or Scully. I Kept watching just to see the names at the bottom of the screen, paid little attention to the bile Dunstall and his pals were spewing, and all through it I thought about how Bigfooty was going to go into meltdown over the coverage. Hasn't been quite as bad on here as I expected, but it's good to see we're in universal agreement about how poor it was. It means they're sure to get a bit of hate mail and if they get enough they'll fix it up next year. Problem solvered hopefully.

Another example of why Fox's coverage of AFL is pathetic. Glad I was on a train listening to as much as I could on the net.

I would put all drafts on a Saturday (ND morning, Noodle & Rookie afternoon). I would have the 1st 10 picks in the first hour (6 minutes for the pick, jumper presentation and quick grab each), then have the remainder of the draft as normal. 30 minute preview before and quick review after the ND. Then return mid-afternoon for the noodle draft (pre-season Draft, called the noodle draft because it's done in 2 minutes) and the rookie draft. Full wrap live after the draft that evening, replayed on normal 10 the next afternoon (Sunday) for those that missed it.

A couple of questions

1/ Fox Sports and the Herald-Sun are owned by the same mob [Rupert ?] aren't they ?
It would explain why some nuffy journo who thought the criticism on radio yesterday was unwarranted

2/ The draft hasn't been shown on TV live for the past few years has it ?
I think Ten did a 1hr wrap late saturday arvos.The nuffy journo in the Hun refered to this years coverage being better than last years coverage on TV at 10am on a saturday morning

How did it rate?

This will be the real decider if it actually returns to FOX next year, I agree with all the opinions about how crap the coverage it was but ratings means everything.

According to Caro's article in The Age today it got 140,000 viewers.

She thought their was an over-reaction to the Fox coverage of the 2009 Draft.

I broke more road rules rushing to get home to watch it on Thursday night than you can poke a stick at. Everyone connected with that production should hang their heads in shame. If I happen to get a speeding ticket I trust Fox sports will cover it.

FOX Sports just sent me a response to my complaint via email:

The AFL draft hasn’t been broadcast live since 2002. As part of our continuing support of the sport of AFL, this year, in collaboration with the AFL, FOX SPORTS made many changes to the format, including the change of timeslot and the machination of the first round which allowed us to move some of the focus away from being a number 1 draft pick to being a "Top 10" draft pick and give the larger AFL community a look at who their respective teams have picked. Our intention was never to broadcast the announcement of every pick after the first round that continues to be the domain of the AFL's website.

Like all live broadcasts we will make adjustments and are always looking for ways to improve the quality and content of our programs and value your feedback.

it was more a 3-way this is your life about dunstall, pickers and lynchy than a draft coverage! no-one cares about where you were and how you got drafted boys...

i felt sorry for shifter, he was concentrating on the picks as they appeared on the bottom of the screen and you could tell he was busting to speak about them but they gave him no chance to do so or shut him down if he tried!

I've got some ratings for last for PAY TV, the good news is that it will be on again next year and it was easily the highest ratings show on PayTV last week. The bad news is that they will say it got those ratings and so lets do the same again. It could easily extend the coverage by 30mins to interview all the clubs next year with these ratings numbers.

It rated higher than all the other live sports that was shown last week too.

Surprised how bad it was considering Fox Sports are generally the best when it comes to AFL coverage, unfortunately it was terrible.

The AFL Draft always rated really well when it was on Channel 7 too. Was significantly higher than those Fox Sports figures too, but the point is the draft does attract an audience.
