Well you get the terrible ones and end up with Aija and Saville who is handy top 30 players but what’s the point. The answer is better pathways and coaching, too many very average coaches and it filters to the top level when you have Hewitt type coaches who harm not help players as that style is a decade ago

Getting talented kids to play tennis is the biggest challenge.

Every town used to have a free tennis court when I was a kid.

Now councils put up basketball hoops instead. Much cheaper when you don't have to pay for a fence.

Grand slams going behind the paywall doesn't help either. Only have to look at rugby union to see how that can completely kill a sport.

I like Alex I think he's done very well but who is our Carlos or Sinner coming through the ranks? It's Alex and Nick then daylight.

Who knows. The reality is if you are a young male who is good at sport there are other sports that are more attractive, golf and AFL for example. You can make a living on the tour if you are a golfer in the top 300, you need to be in the top 100 to make a living out of tennis. It's just not attractive.

In this present era, to be blunt, Nick was it but he blew it.

I think we need to be realistic in out expectations of having world beating tennis players. Although there was a time when we punched above our weight in tennis (Newcombe, Rosewall, Sedgman etc.) that was in an era when a lot of countries didn't play much tennis. The rest of the world has caught up and we are now well back in the field.
