Prediction Fringe players for Round 1

Ok so we've seen the JLT, for good or for bad, now we have to decide what sort of shape our team takes in round 1.

Assumptions- No Kennedy, Nicnat, Mackenzie, Vardy Ah Chee available

Likely 'locks' based on pre season selection and experience-

B: Sheppard Barrass Hurn
HB: Yeo McGovern Duggan
C: Gaff Shuey Jetta
HB: Cripps Darling ????
F: Lecras ???? ????
R: Lycett Redden Sheed
IC: ???? ???? ???? ????

So I give it seven spots up for grabs, mostly in the forward line and midfield.

Who do you pick? Possible selections could be from
Ryan
McInnes
Rioli
Brander
Ainsworth
Masten
Schofield
Venables
Watson
Waterman
Karpany (is he injured?)
MAllen (ditto?)
Cole
Hutchings
Mutimer
Partington
OAllen
Nelson

I'd expect Hutchings, Ryan, Cole, Waterman, Venables, McInnes & Ainsworth.

As expected we're scraping the barrel for ruck & midfield depth. A shame that Partington hasn't come on this preseason, or that Masten hasn't lifted his form.

I'm really hoping that Mutimer, Partingon and Nelson aren't more to add to the list of players who hit 21/22 for us and just stop dead in their progression. But they're all being passed up for other players at this stage which is very concerning.

Definitely. But on a positive note, I'd rather the club pass them up for first years showing something than for an underperforming senior like Masten. Four debutants would still be huge for the conservative West Coast MC, and hopefully the window of opportunity stays open all year to give those middling 21/22 year olds something to fight for at East Perth.

Players I'd want selected: Ryan, Cole, Venables, Rioli, Brander, Hutchings, Partington.

No point picking McInnes, he'll only ****ing win a ruck contest if the opponent falls over on his own legs. MC will still pick him though. Think Brander is also the better Full Forward, but MC will pick Waterman. Also think MC rates Ainsworth higher than Partington for some reason, I'd prefer we persisted with Partington and actually give him some decent midfield minutes, chucking Ainsworth in if he ends up sucking dick, who hasn't played more than a half of footy or bulked up quite enough yet.

FB: Hurn Barrass Sheppard
HB: Jetta McGovern Watson
C: Gaff Yeo Duggan
HF: Lecras Brander Rioli
FF: Ryan Darling Naitanui

Ruck: Lycett Shuey Sheed
Int: Venables Cripps Redden Cole

That assumes that with a strong practice match next week (where?) NN actually is eligible for selection albeit as a limited minute backup ruckman/third tall- given Sydney's ruck woes this is actually a pretty good game for him to ease himself back into -but if he's not match fit, straight swap for McInnes.

Some thoughts/observations

-I think there is only room for one of Brander/Waterman in the forward line and playing them both together actually hurts their development - both are solid long term prospects but I think Brander is more AFL ready and more of a chance of actually playing a legit high quality forward game in Rd 1, so he gets the nod.

-Watson makes mistakes, but he has dash, pace and creates. I think he is ready to play AFL and will develop way faster if given senior games.

-Although I've named them all Rioli/Ryan/Cripps/Lecras are probably too many specialist small forwards for one team. Probably the most injured/most underperforming one over the next two weeks should go out for Partington.

-I'm tired of the 'Yeo can't play midfield' theory. We are stacked with halfback options. Name him at centre, play him there for 80% of the game for the next few months and resolve this once and for all.

The major thing I would like to see in the first month of the year is some stable, sustainable lineups that we can replicate week in week out without too much positional changes or revolving door selections.

Due to the really foolish way the list has been mismanaged the last few years, we will be starting rd 1 with a midfield six who will have have more or less never played as a unit before- we should pick the most balanced looking group and back them in to develop rather than chopping and changing each week.

Whats up with Parto? Had a mate attend a few training sessions amd said he was impressed by Parto but he didn't get a chance in any of thr preseason fixtures at all.

I agree with the midfield issue, I've said for a while that our inability to develop players into gun midfielders is by far our biggest Achilles heel in list management.

We took Wellingham, Yeo, Redden and Jetta from other clubs as promising midfielders and had to play three of them off half back to get them past C grade players. That's unacceptable. They all went backwards when they came here and tried to play in the middle. Our existing structures, coaching and systems have not allowed good players to play well in the middle, simple as that.

A starting centre square midfield of Naitanui Shuey Yeo xxxx is far more dynamic than Naitanui Shuey Redden xxxx or Naitanui Shuey Sheed xxxx.

Get Yeo, Duggan and Sheed big midfield minutes. Having them floating around the fringes while less talented players take centre square spots is a recipe for this continued mediocrity.

I don’t mind Brander coming in but I think Waterman deserves a spot and also I just can’t see it happening. He played minutes in the first AFLX game and the scratchy and only 5 minutes yesterday. Hopefully Simmo tells Graham to sort our forward structures out before round 1. From the others Venables, Waterman, Cole, Hutchings, Ryan, Rioli, McInnis.

B: Hurn Barrass Cole
HB: Sheppard McGovern Duggan
W: Gaff Redden Jetta
HF: Cripps Darling Ryan
F: LeCras McInnis Waterman
R: Lycett Shuey Yeo

INT: Sheed Hutchings Venables Rioli

Start McInnis at FF to give us a tall target up there, Darling hasn’t done enough over Pre season to suggest he will be able to hold down FF until round 3, unless he’s been instructed to bring others into the game because I know we’re trying to generate more scores from the midfield. If that fails bring in Schoey and throw Gov forward. Going to miss Vardy for the first few rounds, a much better FF/Ruck option than McInnis and is better forward than Lycett.

Then by round 5 hopefully we’ll have Kennedy, Naitanui, Ah Chee, Vardy, Mackenzie, Petrucelle & O.Allen back available. With guys like Parto, Mutimer, Brayshaw, Ainsworth, Watson, Brander, Mallen, Karpany, Nelson, Rotham pushing for more games / debuts.

If everyone is fit and firing our strongest team we could have would be

B: Hurn Barrass Sheppard
HB: Jetta McGovern Duggan
C: Gaff Redden Ah Chee
HF: Cripps Darling Ryan
F: LeCras Kennedy Rioli
R: Naitanui Shuey Yeo

INT: Sheed Venables/Masten Nelson/Cole Lycett/Vardy

EMG: Waterman Partington Watson Brander

If fit I think I think it’s important for us to play venables Ryan and rioli as they are almost 100% part of our future. I’d be happy for Brander to be added to that list.

Or maybe someone like Yeo is just not a midfielder?

Everyone bagged Petrie including me lol.. Get him back

That's completely untrue. Everyone bagged recruiting Petrie. Actual Drew showed how soft huge chunks of our list are. More professionalism in his little finger than a great many of our show ponies.

When Kennedy comes back can we drop Darling and straight swap him for Waterman?I know there were a lot of new faces out there yesterday but for a guy of his size and experience to continually pull out of contests was appalling. Ryan should play midfield hes good enough.rioli tho not there for long didnt impress me.Why is Watson being pigeonholed as a defender?? With his skills and desperate tackling he screams forward pocket. Venables showed a few glimpses. Dom Sheed; as talented as this bloke is hes got a soft side to him and he needs to get his hands dirty more often.Cole looked very composed.Lycett if you cant win a clean tap to advantage whats the point of putting everything into your leap just to drunkenly bash the ball.....somewhere!!I wouldnt read much into this but it does set a bad precedent and a couple of these performances early in the season would get some serious grumbling going.I dont think Jamie Graham is a coaches bum and we need somebody like Malcolm Blight to mentor .Early days but similar bad traits rearing their ugly head.
