I hate politics talk on here, but we’re are not well represented by politicians in SE Qld. To paraphrase the seminal ABC comedy The Games, thank God we’re not expected to host a global sporting competition in the future.

The acrimony between the Qld Govt and BCC has been ridiculous in the past 5 years and that it has not been at least partially repaired in that times speaks to the maturity and priorities of both entities.

As much as this whole debacle by the state government has been botched, Schrinner and his crew having a public dummy spit for political points is reflective of what happens when any political body is allowed to govern almost unchallenged for long periods.
Yeah agree 100%, I understand the State Government not wanting to roll out endless streams of money to every inconvenienced stakeholder. But they have tried to play faaaaar too cute by attempting to wedge those stakeholders with this announcement.

I think Schrinner is justifiably angry at being played for a fool. They haven’t been acting in good faith on this, they have clearly been planning it for a long time.

Palecek’s non-confrontational “I am not Campbell Newman” tactic has served her well her whole time in power, but it’s never going to work in a big complex issue like this. It lets her opponents run away with the narrative completely unchallenged.

It has left them extraordinarily weak and has created the perfect opportunity for Schrinner to play the politics his way.

Think it has all the signs of being the LNP mantra for years. ‘You can’t trust Labor, look what they did with the games!!!11!!!’

Brisbane Mayor has quit the Brisbane 2032 Games delivery forum (whatever that is) and withdrawn support for redeveloping the Gabba and heavily criticised the state government.

Have to say the state government has gone from disaster to disaster at the moment, can anyone have any confidence for them to deliver any major project properly, let alone the olympics and multiple stadium rebuilds?

Here's the courier mail article.
The Lord Mayor fully backed the Gabba rebuild on many many occasions.

Recently the BCC was then asked to put in $30 million to a project he started spooking.

Result he resigns from a Brisbane Games forum.
Completely changes his mind on The Gabba rebuild in the space of a couple of days.

Politics inherently attracts narcissistic blowhards and their only real 100% commitment is to re election and wallowing in power.... and if they don't start off that way they soon bow down to benefactors and the political machine.

Not just a Greens idea anymore then, I see. Two parties wanting to can the rebuild is powerful, especially when one is a major party.

Can anyone to point to any mega infrastructure project that has ever been delivered on time and on budget by any government anywhere in the world?

I’m sure they might exist.
Delhi Metro. In fact the people running it were so good, they got handed responsibility for other cities' metro rail systems too.

Doesn't seem very genuine, does it? He's up for election in three months, it seems like a transparent attempt to leverage Palaszczuk's unpopularity for his own benefit. I think it'll work though. And because BCC are necessary for this project to go ahead, it won't.

He has been treated with disdain and insulted. The Games were originally the idea of the SEQ Mayors. They were seeking a low cost Games using existing facilities across SEQ and building Transport infrastructure to benefit their communities. It was then hijacked by Palaschuk and Labor as a political plaything. Remember the 1Billion artists impression completely out of left field? After Palaschuk had previously bagged the whole Games concept! Every stakeholder has been treated like Schrinner it seems.

The Lord Mayor is entitled to resign from the "forum."

But he can't un sign the contract.

It will be binding for whichever political party is in power at the BCC, Qld. State Gov, Aus. Olympic Committee & the IOC.

The Gabba will go ahead.

The bigger issue is the Brisbane Arena, but time is on their side. Only just though.
These new revelations were known previously. I have no idea why they continued with the site.
Maybe they wanted to get other opinions in regard to construction before looking at other proposed site options.
See another post with some old links.

Elattuvalapil Sreedharan. 79, retired.

This guy any good with stadiums? 🤞
Can't find any record of him working on a stadium. But I did search for stadia completed on time and under budget and got the following:

Carrara (2011 rebuild)

London Olympic Stadium

Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Perth Rectangular Stadium

Unicorns do exist! Now let's count up the number that went over budget...it might take us a while...

Should have built the new stadium at Albion. Limited demolition. Plenty or room with the trots oval and Allan Border Field that could be used for surrounding the stadium with entrances etc.
I believe the issue was the lack of surrounding infrastructure which would have ended up costing more.

If they had a viable cheaper option they would have taken it.

Two old articles on the Brisbane Arena. July 2022 & April 2023.
I don't have access to the recent articles being that they have a firewall.

Looks like two separate issues.
........................................
Brisbane Times understands planners are now evaluating whether the Brisbane Arena alignment is the most cost-effective and viable of several options that exist within the priority development area.

...................................
Brisbane-based ASM Global chairman Harvey Lister has been pushing the proposal for almost seven years, but this masthead revealed in October he would face stiff competition from a consortium including Live Nation and US sports development company Oak View Group.

That consortium has proposed to both build and operate the arena with minimal investment from taxpayers.

Yer the Olympics and the Gabba re build will go ahead.

All these Mega projects have binding contracts regardless of who is in power.

In saying that if the Olympics and the re build got canned it wouldn't worry me in the least, I am quite happy with the way the Gabba is now... the seats are comfortable and it is a great view of the field, the extraneous fluff around it like food/beverage outlets, bigger, better screens/scoreboards etc.... Meh.

Would they? I'm not entirely sure of that. Politicians often want the big, splashy projects. And there are persistent rumours that the Gabba was selected to justify the cost of Cross River Rail and to hide some of CRR's cost overruns.

Lots of issues with building a huge stadium at Albion
However, i won't revisit that.
That Albion site is to be used for one of 7 (was 6 until The Gabba rebuild) newly constructed Olympic venues.
For now, it is being called "Breakfast Creek Indoor Sports Centre."

The original 6 new venues

The actual binding contract for The Gabba rebuild has not happened yet.
However, the next step starts 7th Dec 2023
The Gabba Stadium Industry Briefing
The Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning (DSDILGP) and the Department of Energy and Public Works (DEPW) are pleased to be hosting The Gabba Stadium Industry Briefing on Thursday 7 December 2023. Please arrive at 9:30am for a 10am start. The briefing will conclude at 12pm.

At this briefing, industry partners, including architectural and engineering firms, sub-consultants, major contractors, contractors and sub-contractors will have the opportunity to learn more about the government’s procurement strategy and the process to tender for the Gabba rebuild.
...........................................................................................................

I fully expect a binding contract will be in place well before the State election.
My wild guess is March 2024. Sitting days recommence in February 2024.

The IOC contract that each signed has a lot of components.
But it includes the possibility that Governments at all levels can change. That is the binding part.

Exactly - if the demolition and re-build goes ahead it will be a multiple of whatever estimate is being quoted now...no such major project is ever within budget or delivered on time. We are witnessing an absolute disaster unfolding that has the capacity to destroy our Club's viability.

left field idea* - perhaps the afl should consent to extra $ for the RNA showgrounds build if it can secure a guarantee to drop-in pitches at the new gabba

* apologies if its already been flagged

I believe the drop in pitch is already in the plan

We know one thing for sure, the Lions will not be paying 1 cent towards the RNA upgrade, we just can not afford it.
