The traffic in to Carrara is absolutely insane this afternoon.

#heatwave has hit the Gold Coast all the way from Brisbane.

Fans are willing. Let’s make Carrara our home during the rebuild, it’s absolutely the right choice.
Traffic on Google Maps confirms what you're suggesting. Looks like a lot of Brisbane people are making the trip down for this game.

As someone who lives on the Gold Coast it is absolutely normal to have horrendous traffic congestion on the M1 on any Friday afternoon, travelling south to the Coast...

Traffic is my nemesis.

Doesn't help your cause that tonight's Heat game at Carrara is sold out and they will probably sell out the stadium again on Wednesday if the Heat progress to the GF. Either Heat fans in Brisbane are willing to travel to the Gold Coast for this game or Gold Coasters have embraced the occasion. Neither outcome helps the Lions when the Queensland government is currently in the process of looking for a suitable temporary venue for the Brisbane teams. They'll just look at the tonight's crowd number and think travelling 1hr is not an issue.
Absolutely kidding yourself!

Absolutely but this seemed a bit earlier than normal. It was red/brown for most of the stretch prior to 4pm. Usually it's more spotty/yellow than that at that time.

You don't think the QLD government will take into consideration tonight's crowd when discussing a suitable temporary venue for the Heat & Lions should they choose to pursue the Gabba redevelopment?

Not 1 little bit

Okay bud. We'll know for sure in about 60 days.
We’ll know for sure that:

- “The QLD government will take into consideration tonight's crowd when discussing a suitable temporary venue for the Heat & Lions should they choose to pursue the Gabba redevelopment”??

I doubt it!

After 60 days we'll know whether they are going to push forward with the full redevelopment of the Gabba. No redevelopment = no reason to move to Carrara.

Sold out crowd of less than $21K? Wowee

By the same token, the underwhelming nature of the match will no doubt give Cricket Australia pause for thought before scheduling future matches there.

afl wouldnt want brisbane playing at carara, would hurt gold coast a lot having a much stronger team competing in the same geographic region for 4 years.
2027 to 2030 could be very different.
Probably both are strong, given all gold Coasts top 10 picks and for Brisbane the Ashcrofts, Fletcher.

Perception v Reality. The perception that this Government is wasteful is the political problem they are desperately trying to manage. The chosen option will need to be a politically palpable solution. It may not be the best or most expensive. This is a fight to remain in power. They will do anything to ensure that happens.

Agree with all of that, it's going to be very interesting to see what happens.

Something has to give, they’ll either pay for RNA and a new school, they’ll do a band-aid refurb that will cost a lot of money and only extend the life of the venue a few years or they’ll figure out some Hail Mary option that no one has thought of before.

Think it will be pivotal in the new premier's election bid.

How many does it hold, didn’t look too full on the coverage that I saw.
The new capacity for Carrara is 22,500 for AFL. Not sure about cricket with sight screens.

The ground record is 24,032 Pies v Suns July 2014. Suns win by 5 points. Improvements have reduced the capacity since then.

The Suns v Pies game in July 2023 sold out. The attendance crowd was 22,483. Suns lost by 78 points.

Last nights game Heat v Sixes was 20,191.

I think Carrara Stadiums capacity for cricket looks like it is around the 21,000 mark.
The 2nd image is the only thing i can find that shows that figure, it may be correct as the AFL one is.
However, going into the site i could not find that figure.

I have not watched cricket for 15 years so had to find a highlight reel from last night to have a look.
It appears to me the sight screens prevent the sale of quite a few seats in the upper stands.
I can see people seating in the back rows (1st image) which must give them a full view of the game.
The same would apply on the other side of the ground.
Then you have the area just to the right and left of the screens on the ground level for both sides of the ground.

So, my guess is that people did turn up and it was pretty close to a sellout.

Well said Section 5.

Plenty of negative Brisbanites on bigfooty but I spoke to many Brisbane based residents last night who were super impressed by the facilities available and the ease of the trip to the Gold Coast.

I am more bullish on Carrara as an option for us if the RNA option falls through.

#heatwave was real
