The wishes of the residents who moved into parkland boulevard for the park (an at the time under used PUBLUC area which is currently being touted as a higher use public space) and views and the quiet (in the middle of the city no less) should not be a deciding factor. I am sure there were people who railed against that development. What goes around comes around and all that
It is likely people did complain but obviously the 5 buildings of units that back up onto the rail line went ahead.
Nothing at Victoria Park has planned and approved unit buildings with affordable housing.
That one reason why i said the two venues are chalk and cheese in regard to approvals being granted.

In this case the residents have an extremely good case to object.
They may lose but then again, they may go to court over the issue.
Thats the last thing the Games Organizing committee want nor do the IOC.

However, the new LNP government could change the CRR PDR but i think they will wait for now.
He did promise a lot on housing below is one.
New Queensland Premier David Crisafulli now faces the challenge of fulfilling election promises, many of which centre on increasing home ownership and rental availability.
The LNP's most ambitious commitment is to construct one million new homes by 2044, with 53,500 dedicated to social housing.

Quirk really did not do his research to suggest moving the Brisbane Arena/Live site.
He really concentrated on the Gabba Stadium and what was wrong with going ahead at that site.
I think he really thought his suggestion on Victoria Park would have been accepted.
Then move on to see if the recommended moved venue was viable at Roma Street Parkland car park/depot area.

He could have easily checked the new CRR PDF for the area in question.

Below from an article in 2021.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said Roma Street Parklands would be protected and expanded under a finalised development scheme for the area.
He confirmed that residential buildings would be built close to the existing rail line near Roma Street station.
The scheme also provides for new residential buildings parallel to the rail corridor, close to existing apartment complexes along Parkland Boulevard,” he said.
“The 11 hectares of publicly accessible open space within the Roma Street Parklands will be protected forever and expanded by more than two hectares.”

The Cross River Rail planning documents show:
  • a minimum of 10 per cent of total residential (space) will be dwellings with three or more bedrooms;
  • a minimum of 10 per cent of total residential (space) will be social or affordable housing;
  • the social and/or affordable housing will be of a high quality and dispersed throughout residential and mixed-use developments.
Local MP Grace Grace, who confirmed the residential component would include affordable social housing, said: “This scheme identifies opportunities to help us renew one of Brisbane’s most underutilised inner-city locations while protecting and enhancing the beautiful natural features that already exist there.”

10% affordable housing is a "feel good, look at us, vote for us" value but it is nowhere nowhere near actual need for essential service workers. The parts sold as affordable to someone who meets the criteria it become theirs after a specified period so they can sell to whoever they want. Won't stay social housing for long.

The longest specified period I've heard of is 10 years of the lower rent (even when it's one of the social housing organisations), but I am very out of date so that might hopefully have improved.

The better option is use the gabba site to put in 50% plus public owned housing that targets hospital and other essential service workers on long term leases so that when they move on from the hospital it will eventually become available for others still in the hospital system.

But of course there are problems with that.
Government run housing is expensive and the nimbys will cry out against their tax dollars being spent that way, governed don't see that use of dollars as a road to election so they won't go there (im cynical about the new public housing proposals because they don't fit the 3 year election cycle so won't last through consecutive governments) and the people in the housing will say this is my home, I'm not leaving. I know one person living in a government 3 bedroom place for over 4 years. He won't be moved but he is displacing a family with kids.

Thinking about this stuff is depressing me. I'm tapping out of this conversation.

Hi normally a lurker but I was at the bbl last night and nothing was a more apt metaphor for our current stadium mess than the gabba literally catching on fire. I'm sure people will die on the hill that is 'we don't need a new stadium!' but idk if there's any more spectacular evidence than this that it's 100% necessary.

The ABC article is also pretty on-the-nose about it
The Gabba is no stranger to odd stoppages during sporting fixtures.

An AFL match between the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons was stopped in March 2023 following a power outage that sent the stadium into darkness.

Another fire broke out in the stands during half-time of a Lions match against Collingwood in 2015.

If engineering reports aren't enough, then maybe this will do it?
