Gaff - does he stay or go? Let me set the scene..

I want Gaff to stay but geez the guy likes to feel sorry for himself. We win a flag and he's blubbing the changeroom, it's irritating. Couldn't he at least feel some joy for his teammates? For Simmo? Okay some of that may be due to his emotions being close to the surface due to his Dad's situation but at the moment if he cracked a smile his face would probably break. We need him to make up his mind as soon as possible.

There's a lesson for the club here, and this applies to the Lycett scenario as well, we need players we want to keep to re-sign in the season before their contract expires, not in the final year itself. If a player arcs up about it, tell them to pick a club and we'll try to arrange a trade, for reasonable compensation of course.

I don't know if I want SPP really. Does he add much? Would his kicking fit our system? Is his off-field behaviour a concern? Does he have much upside?

I would take all of the players that this board were keen on around 20 last year over him. Allen, Kelly, Higgins, L Fogarty and at a pinch even Ryan...

He brings confidence and aggression. Not sure re kicking. I get the impression he's mucked up a bit because he was a teenager away from home who felt he can do as he pleases. If he comes home, he'll need to be disciplined and motivated to earn a spot in the top side - and this should produce his best footy. I highly doubt he has peaked.

They will trade, or another party will.
We can't unilaterally trade Gaff without his consent, so there's a big risk if we don't want to carry the salary they're offering. I would hope we don't break the bank trying to prove a point and hang on to an A grade talent, but end up paying A++ elite salary for him, causing issues with other players wanting more and us not being able to break the bank again. For example, if Gaff gets offered 1.2m+, I don't think I would match unless he said he was fine to go anywhere in Melbourne. Now, if it was more like 1m, I would probably match.

I am out of the loop, what did SPP do?

If Gaff wants Vic, it seems things may be opening up for us. English wants home, Hogan wants home, Kelly wants home. Matching and making a trade work even if we need to pay a percentage of his salary moving forward becomes an option as all of these options make it worth it when looking at the likely compo pick.

i.e. English and a bulldogs 1st for Gaff with us paying some of his salary.

We'll see who's laughing when Gaff heads to Arden Street and West Coast don't match.

Sure old mate Nissy will make a few noises but in the end Gaff will will be at North as a free agent.

Can’t wait to repost this once we match and your shitty team have to fork over for Gaff!!

(Because Polec is really worth pick 10)

Go take a shit, pick it up and clap you oxygen thief!!

Far more upside that Masto's downside.

We made it through by the skin of our teeth and one more mid injury would have tipped us over the edge.

Add Kelly, SPP, Lobb and then watch the melts go through the AFL and our purple brethren sink even deeper into despair.

OA is going to be a star and Brandner is looking really good (loved his pace in the GF sprint).

Oh happy days, oh happy days are here to stay......................................................

Thanks a lot. He looks like someone that could get in trouble for all that!

But not smart enough - made some real poor decisions & blunders...:thumbsdownemoji:
Haha not all of our players have been as intelligent as Tom Swift
I’m interested your use of plurals though - what other bad decisions /blunders has he made , apart from the obvious brain fade against Brayshaw ?

Starting to question is mental resilience
Many have had worse things happen in their lives. Move him on if so.

Wow if we get Kelly and SPP. Who comes out GF side to fit them...

i assume this
Lycett - Lobb
Schofield - Shep
Masten(Gaff)- Kelly
Lecras - SPP

So Lycett comp for Lobb
Shep back from injury
Kelly from Gaff comp
SPP pick 20 from GC?

Shep Barrass Duggan
Hurn Mcgovern Jetta
Kelly Redden Yeo
SPP Darling Cripps
Rioli Kennedy Ryan

Lobb Shuey Sheed

Vardy Cole Hutchings Lecras

Unlucky Venables Masten Schofield

The bench can be moved around of course.

Perfect except i think Venables will be ahead of Lecras and im tipping Lecras to retire or him being told he will be in WAFL especially after adding Kelly and SPP.

Another big preseason from Venners and he will be making the move more inside.

Having Masten and Lecras in WAFL as depth for a year wouldnt be too bad considering Mutimer, Partington, Karpany etc will most likely be leaving.

Instead of adding players for the sake of it, why not just back Brayden Ainsworth and co to improve and well be a better footballer then SPP?

I personally have not even 1 ounce of doubt in my body that in 3 years time Ainsworth will be a better footballer then SPP, so lets show some faith and give him a go?

The reason we got where we got too was because we showed faith in a certain group of footballers.

Trading in for SPP would be the opposite of that culture
