Restricted free agent.

Who knows what factors a Club might consider when deciding if they will match an offer....
Those bitter Adelaide campaigners have been the only ones to ever match an RFA price tag.
But if it is matched and he's then happy to go to Carlton, and Carlton are willing to give up two Top 20 picks and a future Coleman Medallist for him, then so be it.

Very funny.

Amazingly, a number of the deep thinkers on these boards have been highly critical of Carlton for NOT doing that.

Can't see it happening with Gaff anyway. Painful as things may be, I can not see how we are in a position to attract any free agent at a worthwhile cost. Another year of development on the dozen or so good kids so they look to be REALLY good kids, and a senior gun might be interested in joining in the fun.

Who'd Adelaide match?

Dangerfield. Geelong then had to trade for him
No.

Adelaide were open during the year that if Dangerfield wanted to test free agency that the club could, and would consider matching. Geelong didn't want to get into a bidding war (ie: contract payments) so never submitted an offer. Adelaide and Geelong went straight to the table and negotiated a trade

So you are saying that the punch was aimed at Dangerfield's chest but he bent his knees, then Geelong, Adelaide and Dangerfield went out for a game of golf together.

Credible alternate story.

"The Cats did not lodge an offer for Dangerfield but rather went straight to a trade and it was always expected they would secure a deal early in the trade period."

Translated.

Adelaide told Dangerfield's manager: Restricted free agent my hairy arse. We are not letting him go that easily. We can and WILL match any offer Geelong makes, no matter how insane. Toddle off and tell the pussies that if they don't trade for him, they don't get him.
