He tends to have these 'bad' games when he gets tagged. I thought he played alright last week, but again it just shows that he's not going to get 40 handballs a game when he actually has the opposition's No.1 tagger on him.
He's not going to get 40 handballs a game if he's left open either. He's had 2 bad games this year, against Fremantle and last night. That's pretty decent by anyone's standards.

I'm not here to criticize his games, just to pin a new standard on him.

I think when he is getting the proper tag he is a 25 possession midfielder. Last night proved it again.

He's the handball version of Joel Bowden!

19 of his 25 possessions so far are in the back half of the ground, according to the radio.

Handball jr in great touch last night.

At one stage thought he could use the ball by foot but kicked it out of bounds on the full.

Made up for it with a couple of goals. Just don't ask him to chip pass it to you :p

Dont worry...you'll always have a memory of Gazza's kicking when you think back to the final quarter of the 2009 GF....you DO remember dont you...sixty metres to the square for the Varcoe handball and the Chapman goal...

Gold:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Was beaten when he had a tagger last night. Welsh was on him for most of the first half, then Essendon put him in the centre to win clearances.

24 handballs again last night. Cheap possie merchant.

Running hard at the end along with Corey, Selwood, Bartel and Ling. Just like the last quarter of the GF, when it mattered most.

Bit hard to get touches when you're playing in the forward line for most of the first half and the ball was down the other end of the ground for extended periods, isn't it?

Once he was moved into the centre on a more permanent basis in the second half, that's when he hit his straps.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good troll though HP.

Nice to hear the excuses coming early. Welsh was tagging him out of the game, and the commentators were picking up on it.

The Bombers moved Welsh off Ablett into a more attacking role, and that's when Ablett 'hit his straps'.

Once again it proves you can't rate him unless he gets a proper tag.

Noone cares about your severly biased opinion.
You are just angry because you know for a fact that Ablett>Hodge.
which is laughable with hindsight that you thought it could ever be the other way around :D

Not angry at all, just exposing a myth. Ablett was beaten when Welsh was on him, then went handball happy when he was running around on his own. The best players usually get tagged, and Ablett can't be rated as the best until he cops, and beats, a tag week in week out.

Garry Lyon made the same observation on Footy Classified.

Interesting that for all his 37 cheapie possessions, Gazza scored fewer points than Selwood's 23 quality possessions.
Really Gazza takes the limelight that belongs to Selwood.

Yep, I can't believe the GC want to offer him 1.5 million.

Excuses for a 2 goal, 30 odd possession, close to best on ground performance?

When an Ablett handball is better than a kick from half the players running around today. Runs five meters into space draws a tackler, offloads to a running team-mate putting him in a paddock. Far more productive than smacking it on the boot forty meters to a contested situation.

If you actually attended a Geelong game you would see this. Obviously the umpires, coaches (including your own), media and the vast majority of this very site understand something that you do not.

Ablett's game tonight started very slowly, even poorly, but he managed to work his way into the game when it mattered most and played bloody well.

I find it interesting that Welsh who was playing on Ablett only started to get smashed by GAJ when they both moved to the midfield.

If Welsh was tagging the best player in the competition out of the game why would Knights change the match-up?

'Tis baffling.

It says a lot about how good Ablett is that anyone tries to find criticism for a 37 disposal, 5 mark, 2.2 game. Still, he was clearly one of the best players on ground, probably behind Bartel and maybe Selwood. This is just another way Podgey tried to tell us he knows more than the footy experts, Leigh Matthews included, who rated him as one of the game's most influential players.

I really like when a player chips or toepokes a ball to advantage....and this one is my favorite ;)
