Re: GDFL 2009 Season

No Holzfiend in the team of the year. Nearly won the Whitley Medal.

Marcus Forbes in best 22 players in the GDFL despite playing 9 games.

Team of the year is a joke. Its picked as interleague team not the team of the year. My opinion is that forbes grgic and wallace have not had the best of years but i would pick them in a interleague squad not hte team of the year

Disagree. If you don't understand the concept now, you never will.

The coaches picked a best team based on the one or two times they played those sides this year. This means that the majority of the GDFL coaches decided that these 3 in particular (along with the other 19 players) caused them the most headaches.

The fact that more than half of the coaches had them in there suggests they had better years than your giving them credit for.. I doubt you have seen every Belmont, BPH and Thomson game this year.

Great team and great idea.

Totally agree with Calbert only getting 1 vote, i think he was a stand out all year(hence why he came second in the b&f at werribee) and also stiff not to make team of the year...

Just my opinion but coming from another league over to the GDFL this year, the umpires were more interested in who was swearing or yelling rather than just paying free kicks and getting on with the game....

I agree bmtb, also from another league, have not seen all gdfl games this year, maybe 9 games. The umpires are the centre of attention at all times. They watch too much TV. To concerned with the lesser indiscretions than the ones that matter.

Team of the year was overall pretty hard to argue with, but there were some glaring omissions/inclusions based on this years form IMO.

In - Darren Mathieson, Braydon Smith, David Holzfeind.

Out - Gary Richart, Brent Grgic, Marcus Forbes.

Re Richert, how many Anakie games have you seen this Year?.

0.

because Anakie are hopeless.

i'm sure Richart's had a great year but i can only really go off what i've seen (as i'm sure you can understand) and IMO i doubt he's had a better season than Mathieson or Smith

hard to look past mathisen, hes easily one of the best 2 full backs in the league along with mahoney, so if mahoney gets the first choice of full back then surely mathisen should get a spot in the pocket.
Also with elsey and grgic, if there gunna be picked in the side i wouldnt have them on the bench. There either forwards or not in the side altogether in my opinion.

It's a very top heavy forward line that's for sure, but all the players in it deserve to be there.

Also, James Huybens is bloody stiff not to make the side but i can't see who'd miss out in that forward line to make room for Skroba.

True, but it's hard to flick a bloke when you haven't seen him play.

yeah fair enough.

he's obviously doing something right to get in the team so good on him.

as for todays game.

East dominated all day but you just felt that BPH had more to give. rolled the dice in the last quarter and took the game on (which is when they play their best footy IMO) and suprise, suprise they nearly snatched an unlikely victory.

Umpiring was pretty horrific (both ways) for most of the day too.

TWO THINGS I TOOK FROM THE WEEKEND

  • Skrobalak is the key for East, he Fires they are unbeatable. Dominated yesterday.

  • Wallace if the toughest player in the GDFL by far, got belted all day and just kept getting up and winning the footy.

Thoughts?

1st Point - Agree Skrob is the key but they also have handy players in Closter, O'Leary, McInnes up forward and Cameron in the Ruck.

2nd Point - Wallace far, far away from the toughest player. Takes more dives and plays for more free kicks than Matthew Lloyd. Disgrace how much he gets looked after.

Bitter much?

Wallace is an absolute gun.

the way he throws his body around like a ragdoll considering his featherweight frame is unbelievable

when he is on song he is close to the hardest player in the league to stop, gets belted from pillar to post yet continues to kick goals and take some of the strongest marks you'll see. (looked like Banno earmarked him as their player to target and he rose above it and cut them to shreds)

Unlike most of the leagues other "tough guys" Wallace actually goes after the footy and doesn't worry about taking players out with cheap shots (which we saw plenty of all weekend from all teams).

Funny how people whinge about Wallace getting looked after, if his opponents worried about going for the footy and not tugging on his jumper and taking him out all day then maybe, just maybe the umps might not pay a free kick:rolleyes: (but with the umps display this weekend only god would know!:p)

Wallace is a class act and as long as he and league champions like Gardiner and Maheras are on song, Thomson will be a very hard side to stop.

That being said I'm pretty confident East will win it in 2009.

Great spots by Randy Guy, Agree 110%:thumbsu:

Jase a little disgusted in the commentary box with the umpiring on Sat, Bourkey? My tip is it doesnt matter how bad he is, and WE all know he is woeful, Murray Fanning will still be there on that final day in September:thumbsdown:

Any truth to the rumour that Nathan Lewis got reported Saturday?
He got a card and was off for 15 minutes. Don't know if it is going further.

If he was and he gets weeks then he can put the boots on ebay because that will be it for him given he has been deregistered once.

yep, Lewis definitely got reported.

fronting the tribunal tonight i do believe.. (i don't know what for though, the incident seemed innocuous).

will find out soon i guess.. BPH definitely need him out there this weekend

haha yes, nothing wrong with Jase letting off some steam! should have seen him in the box:p

don't be so sure about Muzza umpiring the big one though, we had stern words with league executives after the game. we jokingly threatened not to show up G/F day if he was appointed:D:thumbsu:

Heard that Robbie May enforced a no drinking policy throughout the finals.. Is this true? If so, I find it staggering that Shaun Lewis has been seen on both sunday's in week 1 and 2 of the finals with a stubbies in his hands all day!!

Dont matter MAY wont be coaching next year i hear the big gerka has got the job.
Werribee BPH Winch Banno Blue West Anakie Corio and Belmont all looking for new coaches.

Dans and Fisher were given their marching orders last night and May got told after last game....Big news.

Understandable that every club that is finished is looking for a coach but telling May that he is out whilst the Hill are still in with a massive shot seems to me to be the oddest committee decision ever made. Moreover if they have replaced him with Grgic this for mine would be a massive step backward.

Not sure why Bell Post Hill would tell their coach he was not coaching the next year while they still have a Prelim final to play. Not to sure about that one.

Two good points, will be an interesting finals series from here in.

Firstly congratulations to East for getting the job done Saturday. Definately the team to beat but by no means over the line just yet.

I must say I thought Banno may have been the wildcard but was left disappointed with them Sunday. Would have loved to have seen a fit P. Ricardi running around grand final day! But not to be.

Of the remaining teams wouldnt be suprised if any of the three come out on top. All have their own strengths and weaknesses.
My assessment would be as follows:
- East Geelong
Strengths:
* two best (form wise) book ends in the comp in skroba and prymke
* The best forward line hands down, so many options if a few kept quiet (ie closter on saturday)
* Very even team overall with Chamberlain as the standout midfielder

Weaknesses:
* will have played just two games in 4 weeks come g/f. Can take the edge of a sides fitness
* Lack of mid field pace on the big ground. Have a number of very good one paced ball winners but I think the wet ground disguised this weakness saturday. In the last quarter when BHP rolled the dice and began running, showed up East's lack of pace and they couldnt stem the tide. On a dry day have the potential to be cut up on big ground.

-Bell Post
Strengths:
* Good mix up forward. Can score goals quickly if on top. If Venner fit and playing having Grigic, Tarr and Kosina as marking forwards can prove a handful on open spaces of StAlbans
* N. Lewis. (if still playing) is the barometer of this side. When he is up and going, hard team to stop. Kicks it a mile and kicks goals.
* Seem to play StAlbans well. Space suits their running game.
* Hard to stop when they start rolling, as east found out last quarter saturday

Weaknesses:
* N.Lewis. Can be equally as bad for the team when he is well held. No discipline and easily sucked in when chips are down.
* If Venner still out, look vunerable as limits their options forward.

Thomson
Strengths:
* Have been here many times, plenty of old experienced heads with finals/g/finals to their name.
* Wallace.(as above post) Their best player and when they play well, most passages go through him. So creative and hard player to stop all day.
* Play StAlbans well also. Not as intimidating as playing them in years gone by but dangerous all the same. (Suprised they accounted for Banno as easily as they did)
* Move and carry the ball quickly which you need to do at St Albans.

Weaknesses:
* Struggle in the ruck department. Crucial to get fast clearances and cant rely on sharking all day.
* Back line solid without being spectacular. Will have their hands full minding the forwards of east and BPH if on.
* Just lack that class the other two have this year.

With all that being said, I cant wait to see this weeks game. The first final win will mean nothing come 2 pm saturday. New ground, hopefully a good day and bit drier. Toss of the coin game with BPH for mine but without lewis would be happy to punt on Thomson sneaking through to the big one!

Absolute bullsh!t post Wagon.

In relation to your comment about Dans and Fisher given marching orders last night......rubbish. In relation to May being told after last Sat's game.......rubbish. That is fact.

All coaching positions are reviewed and most advertised each year as per each clubs constitution. Quite a few will change but I doubt Werribee or Winch in particular would be looking for new coaches unless Leatch or Smith did not want the job again.

Stick to your GDFL U/18 thread.
