2 years ago when we lost Corey, Chapman, Pods and Hunt?

You lost those guys for nothing

You could have got decent picks for Johnston Stokes and Kelly

These kids most likely would have 30/40 games under their belts and with the free agents coming in you would be top 4 next year

Sj is the only one with any currency, and that isn't much either.
Stokes can't kick 25m anymore.

My point was you said we should have let those guys go 2 years ago, we let 4 senior veterans go 2 years ago, you can't delist 7 of them in one year, we have been moving on these guys since 2011...

It's an interesting question. In hindsight the club should have maybe let 1-2 players go this time last year so we didn't have to make so many decisions now.

McIntosh and Rivers have already retired. Stokes has been omitted twice in the past 5-6 weeks and seems certain to be retired - hopefully he gets a farewell game next week.

Lonergan is contracted for 2016 so should not enter discussions.

That leaves Johnson, Bartel, Enright, Mackie and Kelly.

Brian Cook has already stated the veterans will be phased out over the next 12-18 months so nobody should be expecting a mass exodus of all of those players this season.

In terms of form, you'd keep Johnson first followed by Bartel, Enright, Mackie and Kelly.

Kelly seems absolutely cooked and I think Enright will pull the plug having reached 300 games and with a flag not a realistic aim for next year.

Bartel and Mackie are worth keeping around for one more IMO. Johnson is too, but he sets a terrible example with his lack of discipline and on field leadership and if a decision is made to cut him based on this, I'll accept it.

Also worth noting that with a thin draft we're unlikely to want more than 3-4 picks, and we expect to bring in at least three players from other clubs (Dangerfield, Henderson and SSelwood the likely targets).

How successful our trade period is could very well determine how many veterans get a reprieve.

There has been a lot of talk about Geelong's champion veterans coming up to the end of the season. All 30 plus, uncontracted and with varying levels of form.

Probably not going to play finals and have a good chance to have a goodbye in front of their adoring crowd at Kardinia. But, with their skill and experience they could play on either at Geelong or somewhere else.

So, what would you do with each of
Stevie Johnson, Matthew Stokes, Jimmy Bartel, Andrew Mackie, Corey Enright and James Kelly?

Play on, retire or trade?

Friday night sealed their fate, rip it off like a band aid and axe them all, it will be painful for many supporters, but it is the only option. Any continuation will be detrimental to the future and an even more painful re-build that lies ahead. Up until Friday i actually thought Johnson, Bartel and Mackie could go on, that door should be closed. The light went on and snapped me back out of the daydream, nobody wants to hit rock bottom, but the reality is the Cats are only marginally better than the Bombers and Blues, the VFL team has not been good and no matter who they get in next year it will be an uphill battle just to be competitive. I think we're looking at 2017/2018 before we see Geelong in contention for a top 8 spot let alone anything more...
I doubt they will axe the lot, but a couple who were on the cusp will need to be BOG next Saturday or very close to it!
I reckon Johnson will be a Pie or Tiger next season.

with the supposed players going to the cats during the offseason, i'd go:

johnson - delist/trade
stokes - delist
bartel - keep
mackie - keep
enright - retire (has had a great year, could play on for another at the cats possibly)
kelly - delist

People suggesting a clean out years ago of veterans have no idea. This is not a computer game, look what happen to Melbourne when Mark Neeld went through the vets. Reality is you cant put young players in there and just expect them to eventually play like previous stars. Don't forget Geelong had a golden generation of draftees between 09-11.

Is going down hill now and that's the way it is, just have to build the team back up just like 15 others. Only a few teams have a real chance of winning the flag any given year, to answer the original question, we already have three retirees so that's 3 spots.

Kelly and Stokes look done, Bartel also as his body look shot so I include him as well. Enright will retire.

Johnson can still go but should only be deep forward. Mackie should be retain for some experience and he still one of the better kicks in the team.

Assume they land Danger, Henderson and Selwood.
thats Rivers, Hartman and McIntosh spots filled.

Most clubs will then look at 3 ND picks and maybe a single PSD pick.
Kelly, Enright, Stokes = 3 of those. And likelihood is Motlop will walk.

Keeping SJ, Mackie and Bartel softens the blow of multiple retirements.
Maybe you make a call on Bartel and how his body is standing up with the player and what his role is next year.

None of the above takes into account general delistings of players who just aren't up to it that aren't veterans.
Simpson, Blease, Cowan, Kersten, Smedts, Walker would probably get glances at their value from what little i know of them.

Motlop is staying, in fact is about to pen a new 3 year deal.
