Brereton is annoying enough but Mark Howard was going above and beyond to be unlistenable. He couldn't have done more sucking up to Brereton while keeping clothes on. So pathetic and cringeworthy.

For context, Brereton last played the game in 1995. That's closing in on thirty years ago now. For those who grew up watching footy in the '80s and '90s, imagine Peter Landy or Sandy Roberts not calling the game in front of them and constantly asking what Barassi or Richards would have done (to their credit, not once did they do this). That's how long ago it is to the present game. He's simply irrelevant to modern footy, and he's not alone.

Howard I usually like as a caller. But not only did he call Close and Henry incorrectly all game he was also calling Eagles player Liam Duggan Tom Cole, who wasn't even playing.

It was like he'd got stuck into the Coopers on Saturday night and turned up half cut.

Brereton is dead set unbearable. Some of the stuff that dribbles from his mouth just defies logic.

There was a passage of play in the third quarter where he lamented the fact that Oscar Allen didn't drop a knee into the back of the Geelong defender who came back with the flight to spoil. Reckons in that situation you really do have to hurt your opponent and take them out.

The broadcasters pay billions for the TV rights yet they continue to serve up a second rate product with commentators who have low footy IQ and a very low command of the English language. The comedic genius of Brereton is that he draws everything out longer than he needs to because he's actually convinced himself he's mildly intelligent. Billions of dollars and the best we get served up is the likes of Dermot, Hodge, Burgoyne, Riciutto, Richo and Jono Brown. Punch drunk battlers who struggle to articulate anything more profound that a "gee whizz" or a "wow did you see that". Actually pretty embarrassing.

Commentating should be left to those who are the masters of communication, those who can draw a verbal picture for a blind person.

If they can't express the sights, sounds, feel, mood, excitement and desperation of the game like Alan McGilvray & Co did on radio then, well, they should be nowhere near a microphone imo.

Normally Channel 7 have the market cornered on appalling commentary but the Fox guys were determined to give them a run for their money yesterday.

It's a shame broadcasters don't provide the option to mute commentary but keep the crowd and game sounds. Silence is often the best alternative.

Bar jason bennett and sometimes alastair nicholson they are all terrible. Grybas is sorely missed. Commentators are by and large rubbish.

At best there are two decent play by play and two decent colour commentators in the EPL/international soccer coverage from the rolling panel of 50 split between Sky, BT, BBC and ITV.

If we had the equivalent of Roy Keane, Martin Keown, Gary Neville, Thierry Henry, etc doing TV punditry and Guy Mowbray, Alan Smith, Peter Drury, and Martin Tyler doing commentary, we'd have fans complaining about them as well.

In general the derisive attitude towards sports pundits and commentators says more about sports fans than it does about the pundits and commentators themselves.

What it says to me is that when TV stations do their popularity surveys, the votes of dedicated and knowledgeable followers/watchers of the sports in question are outweighed by the votes of other uninformed people who simply vote on name recognition.

People in Australia would lose their minds if AFL commentators so unabashedly leaned into their club biases as commentators of the EPL. Or if they heard Peter Crouch talk.

Midfield depth has never been a strong point of this side, it has gotten even worse with Parfitt and Guthrie's slumps, and boy did it show in the third. Just as Atkins' emergence changed the dynamic last year, I think they have to start looking to new options - be it giving Bowes an extended run on the ball, putting Bruhn at stoppages almost permanently, or something even more radical.

While I don’t disagree, I distinctly remember thinking the exact same thing at this point of last year.

The worrying thing is we don't look like we have any levers we can pull, although as CE points out, the same could have been said about our midfield at this stage of last season. The club is managing Danger's veteran years superbly by limiting his TOG compared to his peaks years and maximising his impact when he's on the ground, but elsewhere in the midfield there are alarm bells galore that would be causing the MC a lot of headaches.

The most obvious upside for us is the possibility of Cuthrie's form returning, and in his case at least I'm confident he'll turn things around and get back to his best. His ball use at this point isn't representative of his usual skill level, so I'm sure it'll eventually revert to the standard we've come to expect between the arcs. Likewise, Blicavs has been merely okay so far this year, but I feel he'll get better as the year rolls on.

On the other hand, Parfitt's failure to develop into anything better than a C-grader, Bruhn being young and not quite ready yet, and Atkins' inability to contribute consistently across all four quarters I think are going to be far more ongoing issues for us, as I'm not sure I feel confident that any of those problems will resolve themselves by finals time.

I think we're going to have to try a few different options until something works out. Give more opportunities on-ball to the likes of Bowes and Holmes and see whether they step up, or possibly try Duncan on-ball every now and again like his old 2017 role.

Blicavs and Dangerfield's form is improving game by game I reckon. I agree that Cam's temporary drop in form is not what we should expect all year. We either need Atkins to more consistently put together his best quarters/games of 2022 or one of Parfitt and Bruhn to stand up. It might take Holmes a while but with Duncan able to play wing, I expect we have to roll the dice on Holmes at stoppages more as well. 3 of the past 4 games our raw clearance numbers have basically stood up. But the issue is those patches of games where the quality/hurt factor of opposition's clearances is high and no apparent attempts at negation are occurring on our end. We have to scrap better for the ones we do lose, more consistently anyway.

I think most of the hate is directed to the pundits, though. Obviously you can't please everyone but I don't think the callers get anywhere near as much grief as they do here.

When you have a buffoon like BT getting a cushy media job despite the shit he saids I.e the Taylor incident waving hand , putting down not only the team but the city itself (first night game with the new lights) and countless other incidents I would argue that no where else in the world would the media personality be this bad

How he has this job I haven’t got a clue he is at the very least not professional and borderline bullying the club and players , and the sad thing is he’s not the only one in the media that displays the same behaviour
