Anybody not travelling down to Winchelsea tomorrow or sitting in their car at another game can chuck the radio onto FM and 94.7 the Pulse to hear live commentary of the Winchelsea vs North Geelong match tomorrow at Eastern Reserve, which will also give live QTR by QTR updates of all the scores from all Round 8 GDFL games

Thought i'd do a mini review after two months of 2010 action.

Anakie

4 Wins, 4 Losses, 95.19%

Have been a real suprise this season and seemed to have recaptured that trademark fighting spirit. Very much the 'barometer' side of the competition as they play a pretty consistent brand of footy. Darryl Bissett has been fantastic for the group:thumbsu:

Highlights
- The emergence of Nathan Bissett, son of a gun who will be every chance of winning this seasons 'Rookie of the Year' if he can keep up the blistering form
- The return of a competitive style of football to the club
- The form of Richert, Berg, Cook and Pitman

Lowlights
- Reserves still seem more concerned about getting into fights than playing football

Bannockburn

7 Wins, 1 Loss, 189.11%

Written off by many pre-season (including myself) due to plenty of big name departures, Ross Dillon and Ron Pilgrim have been rewarded by placing faith in youth and developing a no nonsense style of football that relies on teamwork rather than individuals

Highlights
- The unexpected super start, in particular the big win over East Geelong
- Aaron Eddy stepping up in the forward line
- The emergence of Tristan Battaglia, could be a vital link in the finals as you'd expect him to keep his spot with the Falcons on recent form

Lowlights
- Losing at home to fellow contender Bell Post Hill when the Panthers were out of form
- Favourable draw may have inflated their position on the ladder

Bell Post Hill

5 Wins, 3 Losses, 147.61%

Slow and disappointing start from the Panthers, but the 2008 and 2009 Runners up have started to click into gear to hopefully make yet another tilt at breaking the Premiership drought.

Highlights
- The demolition of their 2009 nemesis East Geelong at Richmond Crescent
- Regaining Chris Moreland
- The recent form of Jovanovic, Shaun Lewis and Jayden Symes

Lowlights
- Round One fade out against Winchelsea could come back to haunt them
- Losing Andrew Venner to a season ending back injury

Belmont Lions

0 Wins, 8 Losses, 27.06%

What can you say? Terrible off season has meant they have lost nearly all their players from recent seasons. Club in a state of disarray and I am certain they won't win a game in 2010

Highlights
- Not many, but the club will be debt free by the end of the season
- Juniors look promising

Lowlights
- Losing to Geelong West by 100 points last weekend, clear indication of how far off the mark they are

Next Month

Corio

1 Win, 7 Losses, 38.30%

Changing of the guard out at Shell Oval in 2010, plenty of big outs and new Coach Karl Fedke has placed an enormous emphasis on youth. Won't be the prettiest of seasons for the Devils but the future looks bright

Highlights
- Like Belmont, not too many but the new breed of youth is cause for excitement for Devils fans
- Barry O'Toole's Interleague performance

Lowlights
- Kicking just one goal in two weeks of football in the two weeks prior to Interleague
- Losing Ricky O'Toole in unfortunate circumstances
- The disappearance of the once formidable depth at the club

Next Month
Belmont (Away)
East Geelong (Home)
Inverleigh (Home)
Thomson (Away)

Predicted Finish

East Geelong

5 Wins, 3 Losses, 114.52%

5 and 3 looks like an acceptable start to the season but it has been anything but for the 2009 GDFL Premiers. Disgraceful performances against Bannockburn, Werribee and Bell Post Hill all at home have left major question marks on whether the Eagles can go back to back in 2010.

Highlights
- Still in the Top 5 despite playing nowhere near their best football this year
- A fully fit Ryan Closter will help come finals

Lowlights
- Plenty. Most significant being the three losses at Richmond Crescent.
- The poor form of Michael Jennings, Dean O'Hara, Mark Vetter and Chris Hickey (The first three being vital cogs in their 2009 premiership and Hickey being a highly rated recruit)
- Selfish attitude creeping into their game

Geelong West

1 Win, 7 Losses, 68.14%

Although only having won the single game this year, there has been definite improvement from the Cheetah's on last seasons efforts. Key will be playing out the year

Highlights
- Not getting blown out as regularly as previous seasons
- 100 point win over the Belmont Lions last weekend

Lowlights
- Still rooted to the bottom end of the ladder
- Leading by 4 goals over North Geelong at Qtr time but managing to conceed 31 goals over the next three quarters of football
- Next month is going to be horrific

Next Month
Werribee (Away)

Inverleigh

4 Wins, 4 Losses, 119.64%

The Hawks have been a bit of a let down considering they were Premiership favourites throughout much of the pre-season.

Injuries have played their role but it's hard to see the Hawks pinching one of the five finals spots come season end if things don't change soon.

Highlights
- Owen Lewis continuing his domination of the league.
- Ryan Garrard's emergence in the star studded forward line
- 4 Interleague representatives (who all played significant roles)

Lowlights
- Injuries to Forbes, Murphy and 2009 Whitley Medallist Jace Kelly have hurt
- Only kicking 4 goals last weekend against East Geelong

Next Month

Geelong West (Away)

Predicted Finish

North Geelong

5 Wins, 3 Losses, 177.78%

Along with the Country Tigers and Centurions, the Magpies are the form side of the GDFL. Have been repaid by placing faith in their own youth who can stake claim as being arguably the best in Geelong (across all 3 leagues)

Highlights
- 95 point win in the rain down at Winchelsea
- Highest scoring side in the competition by over 100 points
- Form of young stars Luke Parker, Blake Hutchison, Marley Swain and Taylor Reynolds
- Recruitment of Paul Breguet has worked a treat

Lowlights
- Disappointing narrow losses against Werribee and East Geelong could have put even more gloss on their season

Next Month

Werribee (Home)

Predicted Finish

Thomson

5 Wins, 3 Losses, 104.56%

The always competitive City Tigers spend the week outside the top 5 for the first time in 2010 and have suprised many. Every chance of playing finals yet again as they continue to beat the odds despite many high profile retirements and depatures in the off season

Highlights
- Unexpected Victory over rival Bell Post Hill at Myers Reserve in Round 6
- Come from behind victory over Winchelsea a fortnight ago

Lowlights
- Getting hammered by Werribee in round 2

Next Month
East Geelong (Home)
Inverleigh (Away)

Predicted Finish

Werribee

8 Wins, 0 Losses, 186.15%

Wow. Runaway leader after 8 rounds of footy and have yet to be challenged by any side. Will go undefeated into Round 11 clash with Bannockburn which looms as 'Match of the Season'
Absolutely superb all across the park, geniune premiership favourite

Highlights
- Where to start? Completely dominated every game they have played with North Geelong the only side getting anywhere near the Centurions
- Form of David Hall, Travis Johns and Craig Rosenweig has been the difference between Werribee being a geniune contender as opposed to an 'also ran'
- Smashing both of last years Grand Finalists.

Lowlights
- Non existent up to this point

Next Month
Geelong West (Home)
Winchelsea (Home)
Bannockburn (Away)
North Geelong (Away)

Predicted Finish

Winchelsea

3 Wins, 5 Losses, 100.00%

Started in terrific style by beating 2009 Grand Finalists Bell Post Hill but have failed to match that success as the season has gone on. Definite improvement in the side but injuries and drop in form have shut the door on finals in 2010

Highlights
- Come from behind Round One win at Myers Reserve against the Panthers
- Ged Hogarth. Gun.
- Revitalized Andrew Leak

Lowlights
- Getting hammered at home last weekend by North Geelong
- Falling over at the death against Thomson a fortnight ago
- Injuries to Kelly, Kruger as well as losing Wainwright to work commitments

Next Month
Bannockburn (Home)
Werribee (Away)
Belmont (Away)

Interesting to read the comments from Markham in regard to his suspension.

I dont know if 10 weeks is appropriate or not for the incident but to have accumulated such a record at 22 years of age is not something to be proud of. I also wonder what the VCFL think when he says that if the ban is overturned he will continue to play the same way.

markham comments they both hip and shouldered and his elbow most have lifted is a lie he never looked like hip and shoulder kelly. kelly went to block after giving a handball markham jumped and elbowed him straight in the jaw. 10 weeks is fair kelly now has to eat out of a straw i hope markham never plays again.

great to see the gdfl setting a standard a wipe this sniper out for 10 weeks. if the shoes was on the other foot markham would be crying like a girl. just less less idiot out of the game

Is this the same David Hall who was not willing to be a team player at his previous club. Is it possible that at his new club he is willing to chase and work hard for more than 5 minutes a quarter. WOW !! amazing

went and had a look at the blockbuster clash at osbourne park today, north geelong ended up falling over the line by 6 points, bannockburn controlled the first half with north taking over in the 2nd.

A few controversial umpiring decision along the way altho 1 man stood out from anybody else and going on the commentary, Derek Fitzsimmons had 51 kicks, i dont no how accurate that is but cal lowther and dale smyth both agreed on it so must have been close. 51 kicks, let alone the handballs that came along with it, B.O.G by a mile. A true captains game.

haha i thought u were callin me a muppet then, cal did fill ur big boots quite well.. dont no about his interviewing skills tho :p

Markham has and always will play dirty.Poor old Kelly playing the game he loves which happens to be footy by the way not UFC. People say footy is tough etc,but elbowing a bloke putting on a sheppard is a cowards act.I too hope the bloke dont play again because it aint the first or the last time he takes a cheap shot.Well done to the guys dealing with the case.I dont know him he could be a great bloke but get fair dinkum on the field bud and your team may just play finals. As for D.Hall at Centrals,Ive seen him play a couple of games and i would hate to see him in a shit side.Looks great running at speed and bombing it 50m everytime but without a few good targets who can pluck the bombs out of the sky he would turn it over. Also looks like a space cadet when the ball isnt in his area.wouldnt imagine a young developing bacchus marsh would be too unhappy he is gone.but good on him for i suppose playing very well at this club to date.i just hope for centrals sake it doesnt backfire when the going gets tough on St.Albans reserve

Although the Belmont Lions have had a tough year on and off the field it is looking like its slowly beggining to come together and rebuilding of the club is definately on the right track. i watched there game on the weekend and they have a number of young an exciting players that as they mature are going to become great players for the club. There were two of these players in particular that caught my eye. One being number 17 off the half back flank, Blonde hair with the surname neville. his a smart footballer, and uses the footy well. Another player that was also sensational was number 3, Jamie Duggan. Takes a great contested mark and is also good once the bal goes to ground.
If Belmont is able to hold onto players like this over the next few years they are on there way to building something special.
Would anyone else like to share there thoughts on this?
