Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

The old Adelaide Oval was about 120m wide with long straight boundaries. Was that not suitable for cricket and footy?

It's not a footy ground but have you seen Lords in London? The corners are practically squared off and there is something like a 6m slope from one square-side boundary to the other. Cricket grounds are unique. AFL grounds by extension are unique too. It's a shame Perth Stadium is an MCG cookie-cutter.

Hilarious thing is some people are asking for the Swans match this weekend to be moved to Stadium Australia which is only 118m in width, and one of the criticisms of KP.

The MCG is one of the widest arenas, and largest capacity venues in the world. Hit the ball right, and batters can run all 4. Comparing every venue to it isn't feasible.

I'm not really making much of a point here, except that it's interesting that KP is the only football ground in Australia where one dimension is so narrow that they can't run the pitch down either axis.

Grounds like Trend Bridge and Lords have ridiculous dimensions.

Distance from Footscray to Geelong: 67km
Distance from Footscray to Melbourne: 7km

You would kill Footscray’s sense of identity and its home attendances.

This is the sort of logic that led to Fitzroy playing on the other side of the city, divorcing it from its own identity. Or for Brisbane to play its home games at the Gold Coast - attendances tripled when they moved to Brisbane.
It would've been good for Western Bulldogs to have been able to play some games in Geelong back in the Etihad days when their stadium deal was poor.

We played a practice game with them at KP in ''07 I think it was, and loads of bulldogs fans made it down.

Would've been deserved after the deal they gave Fitzroy. But with the AFL now owning the stadium the need is no longer there.

Serious Footscray is a small druggie town. Sense of identity get off it.
All I'm hearing is excuses and Geelong supporters selfishly want to keep a stadium to themselves.

Going by this stupid logic Fremantle are 40 minutes to Optus Stadium so they should have another stadium because they can't make the distance and are too far away. Ridiculous excuses.
Port are 30 minutes away from Adelaide Oval, maybe they should have a new stadium aswell.
I’m 30 minutes away from Adelaide Oval can I have my own stadium?

Geelong have offered KP to the Bulldogs to use in the past but they don’t want to play there and I don’t think their fans do either. Geelong would actually profit from it too although maybe not by as much now as it’s now run by a trust

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.
Lost me at "note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final".

It has nothing to do with field dimensions. Cricket pitches run true N-S, otherwise batters/bowlers will be facing the sun in the late afternoon / early evening.

KP runs NE - SW for footy so not a true N-S orientation. The pitch is diagonal to run true N-S with cricket convention.

The Gabba is similar but oriented more E-W than KP. If you watch footy on tele there, the pitch is slightly diagonal to be true N-S.

The MCG runs E-W for footy but you wouldn't orient the pitch this way, right? Footy ends are the city and punt rd ends. The cricket square is true N-S with Southern and Members (Northern) end. The square boundaries are longer than the straight boundaries at the MCG, and because Perth Stadium is an MCG cookie-cutter, it is the same there.

The SCG on the other hand runs true N-S for both footy and cricket. Footy cameras are in the Ladies Stand (Western), with a view across to the Bill O'Reilly stand on the eastern side of the ground, but for cricket they're in the Noble and Trumper/Churchill Stands which are the Paddo (North) and Randwick (South) ends respectively.

In order for the narrow ground (normally used for Australian Rules football) to comply with International Cricket Council guidelines, the drop-in pitch has been laid off-centre on a northeast to southwest angle.

Traditionally, the pitch at Kardinia Park has followed the goalpost-to-goalpost line, but the 115m-wide ground failed to meet ICC’s guidelines, which demand a distance of at least 137.16m boundary-to-boundary square of the wicket.

The subtle shift opens up more space square of the wicket, allowing the ground to satisfy those requirements, which also dictate that the shorter of the two square leg boundaries must be at least 59.43 metres long.

A couple of them, yes - but long term, I think it would have killed their attendances.

Docklands has basically every train line in Victoria running through it. Geelong has one, and you can't even use a Myki to get there so far as I know.

I used to live in Melbourne, and the PITA (pain in the arse) factor was present when going to Geelong. Wouldn't get home till midnight from a night game.

Added peak hour travelling times for balance :car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car::car:

Not to mention there are only about 2 trains after a night game that run back to Melbourne, and you pretty much have to leave on the siren to catch them. No time to hang around a bar and put any money into the Geelong economy.

A big section of bulldogs fans have access to that line through Wyndham, Sunshine, Footscray but face the same problem as Geelong fans from the northern suburbs and Lara. It's a major issue with all night games at KP, and another reason why there shouldn't be finals.

In fairness, if there's a game at KP, you really should drive unless you don't have a car. Otherwise too much of a pain in the arse to get home.
