I reckon we match up better on Freo than Port. Good for us that Port doesn't win this 50/50 on the road. Highly preferable given their style that they don't get the opportunity to take it easy and rest players in the lead up to finals.

That said I tipped and put a little money on Port so it's win-win for me.

Fremantle were the last team to beat us last year

Make of that what you...

Narrow win at home. No biggie.

Unless they sort their skills out and start hitting the scoreboard more often (like that did in that game last year) then they won't cause us too many problems.

Yeah so much for improving their skills under pressure this year! It is only Rnd 1, though

Poor kicking in first quarter cost us largely, no Roughead also huge. Plus if we do what we need to then we won't need to play them in Perth.

MANIC PRESSURE. WOWEE WILDEST DREAMS!!!!
Freo have done what even our side of 1988 couldn't - win the Grand Final in April!

No.. Wait... Just Round 1. Well, it's their Grand Final anyway...

Jeez I know we're spoilt with our teams skills but really these 2 teams aren't Top 4 in that depth. And it's not just this last quarter - the entire game.

Freo have had a ruthless preseason. No surprises they've won this. Overall it's a good thing, they are victims of their own fragile egos and will read too much into this.
They're like the Richmond of the west
More interested to see how they're travelling mid august

It's just not a way to win a match.

Well it is, because they won, but shit they made it hard for themselves. How many times did they burst forward with nobody there?

Still, coach of the year had no answers for it, so many there's somethjng in it.

Gee Port's forwardline really showed how amazing they were. Imagine Lake, Frawley, Stratts, Gibbo, Burgoyne & Birch dominating then running away from those clowns as they compared pathetic facial hair for 120 minutes...

For a round 1 game it was pretty entertaining despite the skill issues at times.

Yes- Freo have the same structural issues as always. If their press breaks down, they are vulernable. if they move the ball quickly there is no one forward. They don't have enough roaming mediums and talls taking marks inside fwd 50. Same old same old.

But they have a decent crack. I admire that. I just don't think their 22 fills out as strongly as others, which puts pressure on the top 6 players to get them over the line too often. Remains to be seen what they are capable of sustaining. But i think it folly to outright bag them. Despite my own criticisms of the way Ross Lyon manages player lists, if they stay fit and can execute pressure- they will be at least very competitive.

Port looked less dangerous up fwd than they have for a very long time. Physically they are ready, but do they have a plan b if plan A doesn't work? I don't know. They need different ways to move the ball. Always running and playing on doesn't always work if the defensive structures in place force you to run to certain positions. Sometimes it is better to move the defense out of position by holding onto the ball longer. They were predictable. Which has not been the case for two years. So, yes, the challenge is there for them.

They give themselves little possibility of capitalising on good play and momentum. It means they have to be good all the time instead of just better in the times they are on top. It's also shit to watch.

The big issue for them is that yes, they will always be competitive. Flip side, they will always give teams a chance against them. Just don't put sides away.

They can't score so they won't always be competitive - look at them vs us early last year. If they can't strangle a team for whatever reason, they fall apart. Saints belted them last year by a billion in the same fashion. They're a team in a bunch of trouble as their depth is on the field - players 16-22; they're in a crap load of trouble from there if they cop even 1-2 injuries.
