I'm kind of glad the AFL season doesn't run over multiple years because I just heard how awkward the "twenty twenty twenty twenty one season" sounds and I'll be happy if I don't hear that term again.

I don't follow the NHL but this has to be a new low for $$$ chasing - sponsored divisions...

Hats off to India they were better than us over the series apart from a 36 all out aberration, a huge credit to them that they can have their captain go home, lose all their main bowlers then beat us at a venue where we have been unbeatable for 30+ years and with the highest run chase ever at the Gabba.

Cricket is dying a slow death, much like Rugby Union is, in Australia. It’s just that it doesn’t know it yet.
The moment you get 2/3rds of your product off FTA, it basically ends your interest to anyone other than die hard fans.

It happened with NBL (briefly popular, disappeared off), union, soccer to a degree, and is now happening with cricket. Netball resurged once it got back on FTA. The A-League is the only one that has really maintained any level of popularity despite being predominantly Pay TV based.

Massively agree with this. The short term $ of foxtel (or others) just isnt worth it when you lose support. The A-League might be ok but would do miles better if they could get a decent FTA timeslot

Newport County goalkeeper Tom King has broken the Guinness world record for the longest goal scored in a competitive football match. King's 105-yard (96.01-metre) shot helped Newport County draw 1-1 with Cheltenham Town on Wednesday in League Two and beat the previous record held by former Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on how the NRL introduction of a 2nd Brisbane side would affect the Lions.

Not being from Brisbane, are there any areas that could be considered "league areas"? or areas that have a good aussie rules following where the fans could side with league.

The current bids are:
The Bombers, Based in Ipswich
The Firehawks, Based in Cooparoo
The Dolphins, Based in Redcliffe

Not entirely sure on my geography, but I think they are West, East & North respectively and naturally will want to utilize those corridors.

I would have thought there would be an Aussie rules increase since the 20 season and GF, is this an attempt to stifle that?

Ipswich and Redcliffe are very much league heartland areas, with the Lions new Springfield base right on the doorstep of Ipswich.

Coorparoo is inner Southside, used to be a working class suburb in the 70’s, but today has a lot of new money there, including a few Lions players. A lot of Lions supporters live in this corridor.

Out of curiosity, what is a firehawk?
The Firehawk, which is a group of Australian raptor species that intentionally spread wildfires by carrying smouldering branches to unburnt areas.

For thousands of years the Aboriginal people have sung stories about the sacred Firehawks, who according to folklore, use fire to hunt and introduced fire to humans.

Lovable little creatures!

All the bids are planning to play at Suncorp, so the differentiating quality is where their training ground and traditional support base is. I'm hoping Redcliffe's bid gets up, because they're stuck out on the peninsula in a heavily RL area, so I see them as the smallest threat to the Lions. We have a big number of fans based around Coorparoo and the inner east, and I'd rather not fight over that territory since we already have plenty of interest from there. Similarly, seeing as the new training base will be in Springfield, we have an opportunity to win lots of fans in Ipswich as they'll be local to training, and I don't want to be competing with a RL team also muscling in on that area.
